Art Miles- the GORILLA (1939)
City Under the Sea (War-Gods of the Deep) is a 1965 adventure/thriller film, and the last film directed by Jacques Tourneur, who is famous for directing Cat People and Night of the Demon. It stars the inimitable Vincent Price and the gorgeous Tab Hunter.
Though the title comes from a poem by Edgar Allan Poe, (an attempt to cash in on Roger Corman’s popular series of Poe films starring Vincent Price,) the script is actually a strange amalgamation of the works of H.P. Lovecraft and Jules Verne. The film, set in the Victorian era, tells of the discovery of a group of 17th century pirates who live in a sunken, underwater city built ages ago by a mysterious race of gill-men.
Because of the significance of The Shadow Over Innsmouth, some Mythos scholars consider any film in which a humanoid amphibian appears, such as The Creature From the Black Lagoon, to be Lovecraftian. The City Under the Sea, however, with its Victorian period setting and archaic language, is far more Lovecraftian than other gill-men movies.
