regulus | none of those ridiculous nicknames | usually in the library or my dorm room, occasionally the black lake | 16 | he/him, never anything else | nuisance: @strongstag |
Regulus sat on the astronomy tower, feet dangling off the ledge, wind in his hair.
He was so stupid, he thought to himself. He was sitting here and moping. Moping over James Potter nonetheless.
He sighed, hanging his head back and letting his eyes close.
@strongstag
James walked up the steps of the astronomy tower, paper in hand. he was mumbling to himself about the stupid homework he forgot to do when he reached the top of the stairs and saw a figure sitting over the ledge.
he stopped, panicked, and slowly approached the figure, making his foot steps loud enough to be heard as to not to startle the person.
"hello" he said softly into the cold room.
Regulus jumped out of his skin at the sound of a voice and he whipped his head around, startled. He felt himself slip slightly from the tower, his legs dangling even further off the edge.
“Fuck-“ He yelped as his brain caught up to him.
Of course it was him. James fucking Potter.
“Oh,” He breathed out, wishing it could be anyone else. “Hi.”
"Woah, careful!" he stepped forward, ready to catch the figure if needed.
"Regulus? Fuck, be careful." He stepped closer, his arm extended out, "why don't you set back into the room. you know, where you're not about to fall over to your death." his brows drawn together in worry
Regulus shakes his head, scooting back until he’s criss cross over the edge, danger still there, but lessened greatly. “Thanks for the concern, Potter, but I’ll be fine,”
He doesn’t take the boy’s hand, no matter how much he wants to.
"okay" the boy says nodding carefully "can you still come farther in though?"
"you're making me nervous" he adds, after a small pause
He blinks in surprise. He was making James nervous? Why would he be worried over him? Still, he does what he’s told and sits farther from the edge, looking at him as he does.
“Why’re you up here?”
james breathes out a bit, relieved at the boy being a little more safe.
"oh, uh" he looks down at the paper he forgot he had been holding "homework. forgot to do it"
he gives an awkward smile
"you?" he asks in a soft voice, sitting down next to regulus.
Heat rushes to Regulus’ face as he remembers why he was up here in the first place. He was sulking. Sulking that James Potter had left because of words he said.
He came up here because he was moping about James Potter.
“Just to think,” The lie came easily and Regulus hoped it was dark enough so the brown haired boy wouldn’t see the pink on his cheeks
"that must be hard for you" he teased, before realizing what he said.
"sorry. I didn't mean that"
"uh, what were you thinking about?" he asked, trying to save the conversation
A frown forms on the black haired boy’s face as he took in James’ teasing, but he shrugs the words off.
You, actually. His brain supplied. I was thinking about you. No matter how much I would like to get close to you, my mouth can’t seem to stop insulting you so bad that you leave, and I can’t even blame you because quite frankly, I would leave too.
“Just uh- life. Friends, classes, that sort of thing.” The lie came less easily this time but Regulus prayed James wouldn’t notice. Wouldn’t notice how he spun his ring on his finger. Wouldn’t notice how he could barely maintain eye contact with the other boy.
James makes an agnoledge sound, looking at the younger boy. he noticed something was wrong, the way he was looking away, and his hands kept playing with themselves gave that away, but he just didn't know what.
after a bit of silence he spoke up softly
"do you want to share?"
Regulus chewed on the inside of his cheek, debating whether or not to tell him.
You want to get closer with him, don't you? His brain supplied. Well then, talk.
"Okay then." He tried to look at the boy, but he couldn't bring himself to face him without looking at his lips, so he opted for his shoulder instead.
He opened his mouth to start talking, realizing he had nothing to talk about. The whole reason he was up here was a lie. He wasn't thinking about life, he was thinking about him.
Regulus stammered a bit- internally cursing at himself when he does because of course James fucking Potter is the only one that can make him forget everything he's even known and replace it with absolutely fucking nothing.
"Actually I have to go." He started, standing up fast. A little too fast for his body because he felt the ground shift beneath him as his head spun, walking backwards a few steps until he reached a wall he could lean on. Problem was, there was no wall, only the edge of the astronomy tower he was now about to fall off of. Again.
He felt himself tip as his eyes widened in horror, realizing he wouldn't survive the fall. James Potter was going to see him die. The last thing he would see is the brown haired boy's face.
Regulus sat on the astronomy tower, feet dangling off the ledge, wind in his hair.

Now that the weather started to clear up, James started going out on afternoon runs almost daily, including today, when the sun was high up and warming everything about him, including his shirtless back and he did laps around the lake
@why-am-i-always-drowning
Regulus, like always, was sitting in a tree, writing in his notebook. Small sketches of his friends occasionally were messily cropping up as his writing became less writing and more drawing.
He was very much trying to ignore James, but it wasn’t his fault if he occasionally looked up, right?
as James passed one particularly lonely tree he noticed a curly haired boy sitting in it. As he was walking past he locked eyes with the boy, who had been watching him for some time.
Once he had cought his breath, and funny enough cought up to the tree, he started running another lap, not really paying the younger black any mind.
Regulus looked away as he saw James looking back at him. His book was held loosely in his hands and he continued to look at the brown haired boy. It had to be impossible to run that much, right? There's no way he did this every day.
Slowly but surely, his book filled with drawings once more, less and less of his friends, and more of that dumb boy who was running in circles around Regulus' head just as much as he was running laps.
//ooc: that so poetic omg//
the more he ran the more he noticed the younger boy's eyes on him.
after running past the sunset, and far past being drenched in sweat, James stopped just short of regulus.
"hey" he says between heavy breaths
Regulus quickly looked away as he realized he’d been caught.
“Hi.”
//ooc: haha ty//
"what are you doing out here" he questions while trying to dry his damp hair with his shirt as if it were a rag
Regulus tried. He really really did, but it was not his fault when he felt his eyes drift to the boy’s chest. “I come up here sometimes. To write.” Regulus scrambled to turn the page as he realized his paper was filled with drawings of James.
"oh. really? that's so cool"
"what do you write about? can I see?" he sat down and looked over reg's shoulder excitedly, not waiting for a response.
He catched a glimpse of the book, which was covered in drawing more that writing
he sat back at bit "that's writing ?" he teased,
Regulus shrank in on himself slightly. "I get distracted."
He flipped a few pages back as he scanned for a writing piece to show him. "They aren't that good."
//ooc uhhh ig I'll put a thing I wrote under the cut cause I don't wanna just copy and paste someone else's work lol//
James finished reading the poem and looked up at regulus with a careful smile and a strange look in his eye, almost like he was trying to understand the boy
"not good my ass Black, this is amazing" he said, his smile growing a bit
he looked back down to the notebook and started scrolling through pages. "what were you writing today?" ...
//ooc: my respects for that, also that is really good.//
Regulus felt himself blush slightly at the compliment and turned his head away. Despite his compliment, he felt his stomach churn. No one had ever seen his writing before and it felt as if a layer of him was stripped away and being examined. “Oh..thanks.”
Eventually he turns back to the boy who’s flipping through pages. “Nothing much. I just got distracted.”
The pages are filled with fragments of poems, thoughts Regulus wrote down before the lines slipped away.
James keeps flipping through the pages almost absentmindedly till he gets an empty page. he stops and flips back once to see a page covered entirely of drawings. a sun in the corner, a girl with braids and funky glasses right under it, stars spread out in between the rest of the drawing, which were all entirely of him.
his mouth drops for a second, still holding the book with both hands.
Regulus stares at the boy for a second before his eyes drop to the page. The same page, he realizes, which was entirely full of him.
James on his runs, studying in the library, on his broom and laughing with his friends. It was all there. And he was staring at it right now.
Quickly, Regulus grabbed the book from his hands and turned away, feeling as if now would be a great time to let the earth swallow him whole.
“That wasn’t-” He coughed. “You weren’t meant to see that.”
"... right" James says, still dumbfounded.
a smirk starts to spread through his face and he turns to face the younger boy, who's face was now a bright red color
"so, you're an admirer?" the question is cheeky and cocky and is paired with a smug expression
Regulus has never wanted to burn those pages as much as he did right now. He was usually calm and cool and collected and never ever a mess. But that damn smirk and his stupid smile made him go insane.
“I- that isn’t what-“ he stumbled over his words as he felt himself go brighter. “Studies. In anatomy.” He stuttered out.
A lie. A very clear lie. A lie he hoped James was dumb enough to fall for.
"right" he answer, very obviusly not believing reguluses words.
James looked the boy up and down before tilting his head slightly
"I could give you a better study in my anatomy if you'd like" he finished the pick up line with a wink, knowing it wouldnt work on Black, but saying it more on instinct than anything
Oh god.
Regulus was mortified. Standing there with his dumb grin and cheeky smile and fucking face was James Potter (who was flirting with him no less!!) and all Regulus could do was stand there. Standing there as images raced through his mind of James. Of what “studies” Regulus would be doing with him.
“Look, Potter,” He snapped, finally getting a grip on himself. “Don’t go snooping through my book, okay? There’s a reason I keep things hidden.” He snapped the book shut, his face burning even more as his thoughts worsened, not shutting off, but instead veering towards unholiness.
He had to get ahold of himself.
James was taken aback. though he should have expected a retort like that, the rude tone snapped him out of his flirtatious demeanor.
"you're the one who showed me it!" he said back in a mix of anger and confusion. "I was just joking, baby black. thought maybe we could get along, guess not."
he took a deep breathe to calm the sting in his chest. "sorry for stooping I guess" he turned around and walked back to the castle
He watched as the brown haired boy walked away, a wave of shame and embarrassment washing over him. Of course h had to do that, of course he had to go mess something up again.
He tried to ignore it, to push the guilt down. It was fine, he told himself. People have different ways of expressing emotions. Regulus’ way just so happened to be snapping at James to try and desperately ignore the looming fact that he really wanted to kiss him.
The fact did not waver, it didn’t fade or wither, in fact, it just sat in his mind- quite rudely, Regulus thought.
Eventually his pity party ended, and he walked back to the castle, the book clutched tightly in his hands.

Now that the weather started to clear up, James started going out on afternoon runs almost daily, including today, when the sun was high up and warming everything about him, including his shirtless back and he did laps around the lake
@why-am-i-always-drowning
//ooc: that so poetic omg//
the more he ran the more he noticed the younger boy's eyes on him.
after running past the sunset, and far past being drenched in sweat, James stopped just short of regulus.
"hey" he says between heavy breaths
Regulus quickly looked away as he realized he’d been caught.
“Hi.”
//ooc: haha ty//
