thoughts on cc shippers? i honestly cannot believe they still exist in 2020, since the show's been off air for half a decade.
This is probably a bad day to ask me this, because I’m in a mood, but here we go.
The CCers fall into three-ish categories.
1. People who enjoy RPF, understand that the F means fiction, and know that while they’re dealing with real people - they look at the real people as if they are fictional characters, and they play with personas rather than thinking their dealing with the actual people. There used to be a much bigger (and much more private) group of these people around, but because of the other two categories, pretty much all these people have gone away. Personally, while it’s definitely not my cup of tea - these people get a pass from me. They’re not trying to prove conspiracy theories, nor are they throwing anything in their subjects’ faces - they’re just having personal and very private fun.
2. The True Believers. At this point, this is literally a cult. I wish I knew how far back my answer was to the last time I was asked this, because I actually dug up some information on cults and cult like behavior, and these guys fall right in line. These people are conspiracy theorists -- obsessed so much with finding ‘the truth’ they aren’t satisfied even when it’s standing right in front of them. And the truly unfortunate thing about members of a cult is that there is literally nothing you can do to persuade them otherwise. People have to bring themselves out of their delusional stupor.
I do find it sad, tbh. I think most of them don’t even care that much about Chris. And are mostly hell-bent focused on Darren’s sexuality -- and I have to wonder why this means so much to them. It literally has zero bearing on their lives, and there are plenty of other things to be upset at the world about -- the fact that your favorite actor might not be gay is not one of them.
I do think most of them are harmless, even though they spew a lot of toxic, mean-spirited, rude, and uncomfortable things online. However, there’s a smaller subsection that completely piss me off -- the ones who throw this in the faces of Darren, Chris, their partners, loved ones, colleagues, and other fans. They are incredibly disrespectful, and I do blame them for Chris turning away from his interactions with fandom.
3. This is actually the smallest group, but the most harmful. They’re the leaders of the True Believers. Every cult needs someone to guide them, and this small handful of blogs do. If it weren’t for these blogs (and no, I won’t be acknowledging them - I’m sure you can figure out who they are on your own) there probably wouldn’t be as big of a movement still... The frustrating thing is that these people come in two forms -- people who know that CC is not a thing, and still encourage it anyway because they get off on the power (or whatever) and people who are so far gone they’ve completely drunk all the Kool-Aide, and fully are immersed in what they’re selling. These guys piss me off the most - as they’re the ones perpetuating the nonsense. Unfortunately, I think as long as they have listeners and followers, they’ll continue to do what they do.
That’s how cults and conspiracy theorists work -- just look, on a bigger scale, at the American government...
Meanwhile, all I really have to say is this -- Darren Criss is straight, and in a loving marriage with his wife Mia. And if that sentence bothers you, you should really take a step back and rethink your priorities in life.
