I just love the trajectory we’re seeing here:

1. AAA game developers attempt to remain relevant to an aging core demographic by producing an entire generation of games about sad dads protecting their kids; owing to the gaming industry’s collective discomfort with male-male emotional intimacy, nearly all of these kids are girls.

2. Though initially intended as motivational plot devices, these girls prove to be far more popular with the gaming public than their dads, generating more discussion, fan-work, and media focus by several orders of magnitude - in spite of the fact that they’re scarcely playable.

3. In response to popular demand, the girls become the protagonists of their franchises’ respective sequels, thus creating a generation of female-led AAA titles by sheer accident.
