NFL Week 4

Back to Back and we not talking Drake. AJ Brown came to play this weekend, making his appearance on this blog in consecutive weeks. Brown feasted on the Washington Commanders defensive backs all day long. Brown tore Emmanuel Forbes Jr ass up for a total of 9 catches 175 yards and 2 touchdowns. AJ Brown takes home the WOW (wideoutoftheweek) award for an Oscar worthy performance.

Nico Collins would’ve taken home the WOW award had it not been for that bad ass man AJ Brown. And y’all know I tell no lies but prior to this weekend I had never heard of the young lad. I will say this though, CJ Stroud is going to have a bright future with this kid and Tank Davis. Collins is a bigger wideout who has great feet. He could not be touched on press and made some impressive catches. I won’t lie he makes the game look easy. Collins tore the Steelers up for a breakthrough performance with 9 catches 168 yards and 2 tubs. 

Puka Nacua is having a Cinderella rookie season. It’s truly amazing that he’s posting the type of numbers that veteran players are known for. With is 3rd 100 yard game of the year, Puka is making a statement that he’s here for the long haul. Against the Colts, Nacua had his usual dominate performance with 9 catches for 163 yards and 1 score. It appears Matthew Stafford has found someone to rely on after Van Jefferson has failed to fill that role and with All-Pro Cooper Kupp out due to injury. 

Brandon Aiyuk had a perfect game catching all 6 of his targets for 148 yards. Aiyuk didn’t score but a few of his catches put his team in position to get points. It’s crazy sometimes to me that defenses give up the same plays over and over. Aiyuk did all his damage in the slot running over routes making the Cardinals look foolish. 

DJ Moore is improving. My running joke is that Moore will give you the highlight play no question. But he’s also going to drop a few easy ones. He’s changing my opinion of him. Against one of the better secondary’s in the league, DJ played physical and made some big time catches against the Denver Broncos. Moore finished his afternoon with 8 catches for 131 yards for 1 score. 

Stefon Diggs knew he would have to have a spectacular day when his team played opposite and arguably against the best wideout in the game…Cheetah (Tyreek Hill). And ladies and gents I promise you Diggs stepped up to the plate in a major way. With his team up 7 points, Diggs caught a back shoulder pass, broke tackles of two defenders, and raced up the sideline for a 56-yard touchdown. Diggs also had an hat trick of touchdowns through his 6 catches for 120 yards. 

Chris Godwin is back! Although players can come back from ACL injuries within a year. It usually takes two years to get back to the player you were prior to the injury. Not that Godwin was a speedster to begin with, but it appears his pre-injury explosiveness is back. Against the New Orleans Saints Godwin caught 8 passes for 114 yards but failed to reach the end zone. 

Sorry it took a little while for this post. Sometimes I lose my creativity and this blog is a reflection of my creativity with writing as a sports performance coach. Wideouts keep getting money and Stay ballin!

NFL Week 3

This wideout shit is getting out of control. This week we had 15 wideouts that reached the century mark. We also have some big names making their way to the blog this season. Without further ado…

Keenan Allen is a man amongst boys. Right now Allen makes the game look really easy. The chargers have used Allen in the slot more than I’ve ever seen. And it’s definitely paying off. Allen caught 18 balls for 215 yards with zero scores. And now that counterpart Mike Williams is injured, I expect Allen to continue putting the weight on his back and carrying the team. 

Davante Adams takes home the WOW (wideout of the week) award. It’s refreshing to see Adams have the type of performance he’s capable of having each week. Davante finished his night with 13 catches for 172 yards and 2 touchdowns. Adams dominated all over the field to make his first appearance of the year. 

Tyreek Hill is amazzzing!!! Hill cannot be guarded 1on 1. Agains the Denver Broncos Hill was up to his usual shenanigans. Hill caught 9 passes for 157 yards and 1 tub. Hill continues to obliterate angles. And although he left Patrick Mahomes 2 seasons ago, Hill’s production has steadily increased and I believe if not Justin Jefferson, Tyreek is another wideout who can eclipse the daunting 2000 yards in a season. 

Mama…Their goes that man! Justin Jefferson is a beautiful thing to watch. I love the way he’s playing right now. And I’m even more impressed by his run after catch. He’s dominating the field in every aspect of the game.  Against the Los Angeles Chargers Mr. Jefferson caught 7 passes for 159 yards and 1 touchdown.

Another name I have never heard of had himself quite the performance. Nathaniel “Tank” Dell absolutely destroyed defenders on his way to a rookie break out performance. Catching 5 balls for a whopping 145 yards and 1 touchdown. Dell most definitely caught my eye and I’m glad the kid had his first 100-yard game in the NFL.

Adam Thielen is a name I have not heard called in at least two years. Glad the kid is still able to put up big numbers making his first appearance on the wideouts4life blog. That boy Adam pulled his old bag of tricks out on his way to an 11-catch, 145-yard, 1 touchdown performance.

Ja’Marr Chase Your Dreams has not started the year like he would like. As he put it after the game against the Rams, “I’m always fucking open.” Sounds like a true wideout. I remember in college saying the same shit every play to never get the ball thrown my way. Chase caught 12 balls for 141 yards with zero scores. I’m hopeful Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals play callers get this young lion the ball. Wideout fans like to see the wideouts ball.

AJ Brown is a dog. I know when watching tape of Mr. Brown, he’s going to give everything he has to give. After not contributing to the Eagles as he would have liked too. AJ Brown caught 9 passes for 131 yards. Brown did not score but every yard he earned helped the eagles beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. 

No introduction is need when a name like Deebo Samuel is mentioned. And as I write this blog, looking at the names above, I’m ecstatic because for the next decade I will get the chance to witness some of the greatest wideouts to ever play the game. You have to be a man to play for the San Francisco 49ers. They run so many fucking slants, it’s ridiculous. Deebo scored on a beautiful go-route thrown by Brock Purdy ending his night with 6 catches for 129 yards. 

It sucks that on a great day that Mike Williams was having. His knee got twisted in an awkward position leading to the young man tearing his ACL. Williams is out for the season. But prior to the injury Williams caught 7 passes for 121 yards and scored on trick play from fellow wideout Keenan Allen. 

Amari Cooper is like fine wine. He just keeps getting better with age. I still standby the point Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe that Cooper does turn it on and off. But maybe that isn’t a bad thing. It definitely lures defensive backs to sleep. Amari still is the best on press release and it’s not even close. Cooper almost made a guy fall on a sweet fade route he hauled in finishing his afternoon with 7 catches for 116 yards and 1 touchdown. 

DK Metcalf is a physical specimen. His route running is not great. And that’s ok, Terrell Owens wasn’t a route runner but he damn sure made plays. As I watch more and more film Metcalf reminds me of the hall of fame wideout. He catches better than T.O and for sure is faster as well. Against the Panthers Metcalf caught 6 passes for 112 yards helping secure the victory for the Seahawks.

Stefon Diggs is one of my favorite wideouts to watch. One pet peeve of mines is when wideouts make a routine catch against zone coverage and get up with the shenanigans. Against the Washington Commanders Diggs caught 8 passes for 112 yards. I feel he needs to do more because there are two hogs in Justin Jefferson and Tyreek Hill battling for the NFL’s top wideout spot. 

Ohio State and Alabama have put out tons of the wideouts who are really good as of the recent 5 years. One of those wideouts Chris Olave an Ohio State product just keeps on producing. Olave had a sweet one-hand catch up the right sideline that was ridiculous. Olave finished his night with 8 catches for 104 yards. For a 2nd year player, Olave checks all the boxes and I can only imagine his game will continue to get better. 

Last man to reach the century mark this weekend is none other than Amon-Ra St. Brown. Against the Atlanta Falcons, St Brown was a nuisance. St. Brown hauled in 9 passes for 102 yards placing him at #5 in receiving yards. 

Another week of wideouts balling out. 15 wideouts catching for at least 100-yards is a record. Im ecstatic to see if we can eclipse this feat once again during the season. A lot of writing but well worth it. Wideouts Let’s Go!

NFL Week 2

I’d have to check this next statement for actually facts. But, I believe Mike Evans either has tied Larry Fitzgerald for 9 consecutive seasons with 1000 yards. Or he set the record for most 1000 yard seasons to open a career. Either way, this is really impressive considering all the variables that go into maintaining such consistency. Staying healthy is the real key and Mike Evans has built a resume that could withstand any argument as a top wideout in his era.

This past Sunday Evans talent was on full display. Mike caught 6 balls for 171 yards and 1 touchdown. Evans most exciting play came on a pass that he out jumped a defender and raced for a 75-yard gain while being pushed out at the 5-yard line. His touchdown came on a simple go route that Evans made look too easy. 

Mama there goes that man! Damn! Justin Jefferson is really good. Against one of the better cover corner’s in the NFL (Darius Slay), Jefferson had his way all afternoon. Catch after catch Jefferson made Slay earn his paycheck. Jefferson ended the night with 11 catches for 159 yards with zero scores. Jefferson ran the route tree and is only improving. I love how his run after catch has improved and he’s playing with more tenacity. If he continues to play at this pace, I believe he can be the first wideout to eclipse 2000 yards.

Puka Nacua is making sure the NFL knows his name loud and clear. Setting an NFL rookie record with most catches in the first two games of the season (25). Nacua is picking up what the team is missing from injured All-Pro Cooper Kupp. I won’t rain on Nacua’s parade but what he’s doing is leading me to look at Kupp’s record setting season as a by product of Matthew Stafford. 

Think about it. Stafford was the QB of the Detroit Lions when Calvin Johnson set the record for most yards in a season with 1964.  Stafford won the Super Bowl the year Kupp became the #2 yards leader in NFL history with 1947. I would not be surprised if similar numbers are achieved by Nacua especially if Kupp lingers on IR for about half the season. 

Nacua caught 15 passes for 147 yards with zero scores. His play matched the intensity and toughness of the San Francisco 49ers defense. I love how physical the rookie is playing. Catching slants over the middle is no easy task at any level, especially the hard hitting NFL. I regard the 49ers defense as the best in football and watching the kid carve a hole in the defense lets me know he’s going to have a very productive season. 

Nico Collins is making his first appearance on this blog with a healthy performance against the Indianapolis Colts. Collins caught 7 balls for 146 yards and 1 touchdown. Nico caught a slant on his first pass and raced 45 yards before eventually being tackled. Collins lone touchdown came on what looked like a busted coverage. I think rookie CJ Stroud has found his go to wideout and I look forward to the kid having more 100 yard games this season. 

Ceedee Lamb is making his first appearance of the 2023 season. Against one of the better corners (Sauce Gardner) and a pretty good New York Jets defense, Lamb licked his chops all over the field this past Sunday. Ceedee caught 11 passes for 143 yards. I like that he’s playing aggressive and being physical at the point of attack. He’s now in his 3rd season and looking like the #1 wideout team owner Jerry Jones thought he could be. 

Speed kills! Devonta Smith is a speedster like the road runner. The majority of his yardage came on two deep shots from Jalen Hurts with one being slightly under thrown. That didn’t matter as Smith jumped over the defender, Moss’n him in the process to complete the catch. Devonta’s touchdown came on a go-route that the defender was sitting on. Smith ran right by him on his way to the end zone for a 63-yard touchdown. 

George Pickens is a name I have never heard of either. But after the game he had against divisional rival Cleveland Browns, I’m sure I won’t forget his name nor his game moving forward. Pickens only caught 4 of the 10 balls targeted in his direction. On a long 3 and forever, Pickens inside released on a speed dig and galloped his way 71-yards for a touchdown. Pickens finished the night with 127 yards to give his team the much needed victory. 

It’s good to see Keenan Allen back carving up defenses across the NFL. The Allen of old would have a great game to then be sidelined the next week. But the 2023 Allen is a different animal. The thing I pick up in his body language is that’s he’s fully healthy and happy. Against the Tennessee Titans, Allen had 8 catches for 111 yards and 2 touchdowns. His team took home the Loss but personally the day was a win for Allen. 

Christian Kirk has lived up to the big contract he signed last summer worth $72 million dollars . Against the Kansas City Chiefs, Kirk made his presence felt early and quite often. Christian caught 11 passes for 110 yards. Kirk didn’t score but I look forward to him continuing to dominate from the slot. 

DJ Moore was traded this off-season to the Carolina Panthers. I feel this was an upgrade for the Panthers but a mistake by the New Orleans Saints. Moore caught 6 passes for 104 yards. He didn’t go deep but ran a couple dig routes that turned defenders around. As he and quarterback Bryce Young chemistry grows I expect Moore to have more than a few 100-yard games this season. 

This last wideout had his first 100-yard game of the season. I’ll always root for the kid to do good because I coached him in high school. Amon-Ra St. Brown will get paid this off-season especially if he has his 3rd straight 1000 yard season. Against the falcons he was used all over the field. St. Brown caught balls from out wide, in the slot, and from the backfield. Amon-Ra caught 6 passes for 102 yards with zero scores. 

Sorry this blog is a late but as long as it gets done that’s all that matters. After watching the tape I’m going to give Keenan Allen the WOW award (wideoutoftheweek) because he scored twice and at the end of the day the wideouts get paid to score.

NFL Week 1

Wowww!!! What a weekend. The 2023 NFL season didn't disappoint in its first week back in action. Everybody who tunes in knows my affinity and affection for the wideouts. Last year we witnessed the dominant performance of 4th year pro Justin Jefferson. Who continues to prove his case of why he’s the top wideout in the National Football League. Jefferson was the Wideouts4Life 2022 Wideout of the year after finishing the year with 1,809 yards on 128 catches for 8 touchdowns. I’ll dissect his game as the year goes on but one area I would like to see improve is his scoring.

Jefferson picked up right where he left off. He started off plucking a high thrown slant out the air and making a defender miss as he stretched out for a Vikings first down. The self proclaimed best wideout in the league finished the day with 9 catches for 150 yards without scoring.

The WOW(wideout of the week) goes to the most exciting player in the NFL…Tyreek Hill otherwise known as “Cheetah.” The mercurial wideout bedazzled from the outset of the game. Hill opened the game with a 30-yard speed dig where he left the corner’s head spinning. His next catch would come on a stutter-stab press release, for a 35-yard touchdown. Hill’s last catch was a quick fade at the 5-yard line for his 2nd tub of the day. Tyreek Hill finished the day with 10 catches, 215 yards, and 2 touchdowns.

Brandon Aiyuk had a productive first game of the year with a perfect 8 targets for 8 catches, 129 yards, and 2 touchdowns. Had Tyreek not did what he did Aiyuk would’ve taken home the wideout of the week award. Aiyuk’s first score came by way of a skinny post in the redzone. Then on a perfectly thrown fade ball from Brock Purdy, Aiyuk fought through the hold to snag his second touchdown of the year. I look forward to watching the 49ers and their physical brand of football.

The Los Angeles Rams opened the season without their top wideout Cooper Kupp due to a hamstring injury. However that didn’t stop the Rams from beating the Seattle Seahawks and having two wideouts reach the century mark. 

Rookie Puka Nacua who I have never heard of had one hell of a game in my opinion. His first opportunity was a 5-yard in route thrown slightly behind him causing him to drop the ball(not his fault). Nacua wouldn’t let that drop deter him. Puka caught 10 of his next 14 passes with one drop and a few bad throws by Matthew Stafford. The rookie sensation ended the afternoon with 119 yards helping his team to their first win of the season.

With an exact yardage output as his counterpart. Third year wideout Tutu Atwell did his part by catching 6 of 8 targets for 119 yards but no score. Atwell is a speedster out of Louisville and the Rams deep threat. Although he didn’t make the few plays called for him I look forward to Atwell adding pressure on opposing defenses all year.

Chris Olave is a wideout I’m really beginning to love watching. The kid is supremely talented and I see why he’s doing what he does. Olave runs effortlessly and is really smooth in his route running. The uber talented wideout caught the ball all over the field. But I was really impressed by a comeback route he caught for an 8-yard gain; where he toe-tapped maintaining his concentration and completing the catch. He finished the afternoon with 112 yards by way of 8 receptions and no scores.

One guy who’s name was in the media all summer came out with something to prove in the Bills lost to the New York Jets. Stefon Diggs in my opinion is still a top-10 wideout. At times and I won’t lie…I’m beginning to feel his place among the games best is starting to slip. This isn’t his fault. Bills quarterback Josh Allen is horrendous and always makes the crucial mistake. 

The New York Jets lost their play caller and future Hall of Fame QB Aaron Rodgers on the fourth play of the game. Most people thought the game was over until Josh Allen threw the Jets 3-interceptions and lost a fumble. Despite Diggs catching 10 passes for 102 yards with a touchdown; his team lost. As a former wideout and coach, I think Diggs knows Allen isn’t the guy to take the team where it needs to be and his frustrations are about winning not just stats.

Last but certainly not least is Jacksonville’s newest addition and University of Alabama alum Calvin Ridley. Suspended for a year for betting on sports, Ridley showed NFL fans what we have been missing while he served his year’s long suspension. Ridley is a natural in all phases of wideout play. He’s a natural hands catcher and a smooth route runner. Ridley also has the run after catch ability to turn a 12-yard curl into a 45 yard gain as he did against the Colts. I look forward to the young wideout continuing to improve from week to week and excited that he’s back!

Marquez Valdes-Scantling scores on a 19-yard touchdown pass from QB Patrick Mahomes during the AFC Conference Championship.

The Cincinnati Bengals versus the Kansas City Chiefs was the matchup of the year. We like to paint the matchup as Joe Burrow vs Patrick Mahomes and how Burrow and the Bengals were 3-0 against Mohomes and the Chiefs. It’s never QB vs QB. The defense plays a tremendous importance to who wins these games. Prior performances show that Mahomes held his own in each of those loses. Twice the game went into overtime with the Bengals defense making a play to seal the game. 

This weekend showed just how special Mahomes could be during the Chiefs win. Without their top two wideouts, Marquez Valdes-Scantling chose to have his best performance yet. The 5th year wideout is in his first season with the Chiefs. He opened up his night with a hitch up the right sideline. Next he caught a body twisting corner route between two defenders. Valdes-Scantling’s longest play came on a flat route where he caught the ball and exploded up the field, shaking 3 defenders in route to a 29-yard gain. 

He finished the night with 6 catches for 116 yards and 1 touchdown. By default Marquez is the wideout of the week. 

My early prediction is the Chiefs will beat the Eagles in the SuperBowl. Mahomes is a better quarterback than Jalen Hurts who appears to not be 100% healthy. Philly does have a better wideout core but the person delivering the ball is most important. At the end of the day I feel Mahomes avenges his lost to Tom Brady and takes it out on the Eagles.

Ceedee a "Lamb" no More!

Ceedee Lamb “Chops” feasted his way to a beastie performance against a formidable 49er defense. Right off the bat Ceedee made a great play in which he took the handoff on a jet sweep on fourth and 1. Breaking a tackle by one of the over-zealous defenders who slightly over ran the play allowing Lamb to spin back inside and pick up the all important 1st down. Prior to that play Lamb caught a couple swing passes where he picked up nice chunks of yardage with great blocking from his wideouts. 

Needing a spark and while backed up at their own 9-yard line, Lamb blew by 49ers defender Deommodore Lenior and held on to a 46-yard gain while receiving a pass-interference call. Ceedee created space out of his break all night because he played fast coming off the ball. Lamb finished the night with 10 receptions for 117 yards. 

On the year Ceedee Lamb finished #6 in the NFL with 107 catches for 1,359 yards and 9 touchdowns. This is one hell of a season by him. And to think about the way he started which does not matter because at the end of the day how you finish is most important. I am impressed by what Ceedee was able to accomplish and with the way he finished the season. I believe he will carry this momentum into the off-season and comeback next year looking to compete for the best wideout in the league. 

It’ll be a few more weeks but I will have the wideout of the year award ready before the Super Bowl. Plus I’m working on getting some merchandise on the website so wideout fans can start supporting.

“How Bout Dem Cowboys!"

Ladies and Gentlemen the saying in football meetings, practices, games, et.al., is, “You’re only as good as your last play,” or “You’re only as good as your last game.” Growing up I was a huge Cowboy fan. As a kid it brought me great joy to see the Cowboys win 3 Championships in 4 seasons. I became a huge Deion Sanders (Coach Prime) fan when Jerry Jones gave Primetime a 7-year contract worth $35 million. I even started playing football wanting to be like Deion on the filed. 

This also meant I hated the San Francisco 49ers and still somewhat do. Now although I no longer consider myself a fan of any team because I like to sports bet and favorite teams always kill you. I’m a former Offensive Coordinator and Wideouts Coach/Trainer and a writer of sports. So being objective and not letting my feelings get in the way has become more beneficial to me as I have gotten older. 

I initially was worried that Dallas would lose to Tom Brady because of that internal feeling players get when they face a team they know they haven’t beaten. Talk about psychological warfare. It’s reminiscent of my playing days when we faced Boise State. If I’m not mistaken Boise won the WAC and never lost a WAC conference game from 03-06. But before the new staff came in I didn’t play that much at wideout.

I’m an extremely honest (sometimes to honest for most) person but its based on logic. Back then I would laugh at the coaches terrible fucking speeches and lack of right communication from those in leadership positions. And it is clear to see when a team is just coached better. Here was my logic, if our corners can’t stop us in practice and our record was trash how are they going to stop an undefeated better coached Boise State. No, Boise didn’t have better talent at the wideout position. But the way they played was 1000 times harder, tougher, and more physical than us and our mascot name is Spartans. 

And I tell this story because I would listen to the defensive of players talk about what they were going to do and this and that and them nigga’s would go out there and get ran by. We sucked as a team. The head coach Fitz Hill-one of the first 3 African American Coaches was at the helm. This dude held a PH.D in Teaching or Communication. And when I tell you bright…boy coach hill’s thesis/dissertation if one of the most phenomenal pieces of literature I have ever read. And this doesn’t mean shit. He simply could not coach. His communication skills as a coach were awful. Fitz Hill was a charlatan and belittled us players because of his “doctorate” status and ran an environment not conducive to creating a winner culture. 

Fast forward my last year in college with Dick Tomey at the helm and with a way less talented roster, we lost by 20 I believe his first year while playing a night game in Boise. And we lost by a last second field goal in 2006 after James Jones (Packers) dropped a ball on 3rd down that would’ve given us a first down so we could run out the game clock. 

I mention this story because as of late the 49ers have been a better team than Dallas . Kyle Shanahan gets praised for his offensive run game. Mike McCarthy has one of the most scrutinized jobs in sports. But he is a former Super Bowl winning coach (I was at that Super Bowl) and he may not call plays but offensively he is not shabby as a coach. Is mindset is to throw the ball down teams freaking throat. And this year coach McCarthy has a top 10 passing defense (#8) and was #5 in points. The 49ers have played in 2 of the 9 previous super bowls and 2 out of the past 3 NFC Championships. 

I don’t know what the score will be but my prediction is that the Cowboys will end up with a late lead, and end Brock Purdy’s cinderella season on either a sack or interception. How bout them Cowboys?!

Wild Card Weekend

Each game this weekend outside of the Cowboys/Buccaners game went over the spread. You would think because we witnessed a lot of scoring that the point totals would trickle down to wideouts having monstrous days…and that was far from the case. We had 8 players go over 100 yards receiving for the day. Half were tight-ends and for now I haven’t talked about them on this blog even though next season I’m thinking about including them…I mean they do catch the ball too. 

In High School one of my favorite quotes was, “Big time players, make big time plays, in big time games.” DK Metcalf is a big time player. As the game was about to get out of hand, DK ran a go-route up the left sideline using a speed release to catch his first touchdown of the day for 50 yards. This cut the lead to 10-7. Despite losing 41-23 Metcalf had a great afternoon. He caught 10 passes for 136 yards and 2 TD’s. His second touchdown was during garbage time but it still counts because he can use this performance to build on during off season. It’s unusual for me to see a 49ers defense cautious when tackling wideouts but Metcalf sure had Lenoir and Ward making business decisions when trying to tackle the beastie wideout. 

Deebo last name Samuel looked so damn fast on his only touchdown of the day. Samuel plays a physical brand of football from the wideout position. His first touch was a toss where he plowed his way for a 15-yard gain. Deebo is the perfect proprietary blend of toughness, explosion, quickness and bedazzlement. His touchdown of 72 yards in which 66 of them were YAC (yards after catch). Mr Samuel got a great block from tight-end George Kittle, weaved slightly inside to set up the defender and turned the jets on smoking defenders on his way for 6 points. I like winners and not saying DK isn’t one but his team lost so Deebo Samuel is this weeks wideout of the week.  

Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis finished Sunday’s game with damn near identical statistics. The “I’m Him” wideout caught 7 balls for 114 yards with zero touchdowns. Davis caught 6 passes for 113 yards and 1 touchdown. It was crazy to me that Miami got back in the game right before halftime after trailing 17-0. It’s almost safe to say that had Tua or Bridgewater played Miami may have won this game. I love the way these two competed against the up in your face defense by the Miami secondary. I expect another solid performance by the duo this coming weekend against a Cincinnati Bengals team who played in last season’s Super Bowl despite losing to the Rams. 

Our last wideout to go over 100 yards on Sunday was Isaiah Hodgins of the New York Giants. This is my first time hearing his name but after watching highlights I liked what I saw on his tape. Hodgins ran a beautiful bang post for a 12 yard touchdown. He caught 8 passes for 105 yards and 1 touchdown. In a perfect world, I hope Hodgins duplicates this performance by going out with the game of his life against the Philadelphia Eagles so the Dallas Cowboys could beat the Giants the following week and return to their first Super Bowl in 28 years.

NFL Week 18

Week 18 brought much excitement to the fan meticulously watching to see where their teams would seed for the playoffs. Although the Detroit Lions could not get into the playoffs because the Seattle Seahawks beat the Los Angeles Rams earlier in the day. It brought great joy to my eyes to see the Packers lose. I was also disappointed to not see Calvin Johnson’s record broke this season. And even with the addition of a 17th game, what Johnson did was really impressive considering he achieved the milestone in 16 games. By next week I will have chosen this years wideout of the year award. And with the way Davante Adams finished his season it’ll be a close race to select who I feel is the NFL’s top wideout.

Not too many wideouts scored touchdowns this weekend. Three out of seven that I’m about to talk about scored 4 touchdowns combined. The wideout of the week is non other than Jerry Jeudy of the Denver Broncos. It appears that head coach Nathaniel Hackett was the problem. Russell Wilson has looked like a different quarterback since the Broncos fired the coach. It’s also exciting to see Jeudy healthy. The kid is extremely explosive. He caught 5 balls for 154 yards with no tinkers. I loved how he jogged off the ball luring the db to sleep and then sped past him for a 50 yard gain that was actually under thrown. Jeudy’s last catch was a speed dig where he caught the ball and exploded between a few defenders for another 15 yards. I look forward to Jeudy having the best season of his career next year. 

Drake London will have a promising career. London finished the season 134 yards away from 1,000. Throughout the season he made some big plays. I believe he made my blog 2-3 times this yeas which is not bad for a rookie. London finished his afternoon with 6 catches for 120 yards with zero scores. Utilizing his big frame, London was able to do most of his damage across the middle on over and post routes. He was able to beat a defender on a nice go route to finish with a pretty good night at the office. 

K.J. Osborn is a nice number 3 wideout to have. His speed is definitely his strong point and with the attention Jefferson demands, the respect that Adam Thielen has, leaves Osborn with opportunities to ball as he did and making his way to the blog for a 2nd time. Osborn caught 5 passes for 117 yards but did not score. His big play came on a fake screen to Thielen, where Osborn faked a block and caught a 40 yard gain up the right sideline. He caught a couple of out patterns to finish the game. I have the 49ers as my team going to the Super Bowl but I hope lady luck sticks in the Vikings corner because their defense has needed help all year. 

Brandin Cooks had his first 100 yard game of the season. Cooks caught 5 balls for 106 yards with 1 touchdown on skinny post. Stefon “Im Him” Diggs finally got back to his old ways after going 6 games without eclipsing 100 yards. Diggs caught 7 passes for 104 yards with a touchdown on a streak-route. Christian Watson amounted the same amount of yards as Diggs. Watson tallied his 104 yards on just 5 catches including an unbelievable diving 1-hand catch on a 50-yard bomb from Aaron Rodgers. And lastly is our guy Keenan Allen of the San Diego Chargers. Allen finished his regular season with 8 catches for 102 yards and scored twice. Allen is playing fast and appears to be healthy. With a healthy wideout core I could see the Chargers giving teams in the AFC a run for their money. Who knows they could end up upsetting the Chiefs or Bengals.

I’m proud of the way the wideouts on each team played this season. I looked forward to great plays being made throughout the playoffs. And may the best wideouts win. 

This concludes my first full season blog. To keep it going I think I’m going to post videos or pics and blog about how a wideout should train during the off season. I don’t know I’m just going to post what feels natural and see where it takes me. Wideouts Let’s Go!

NFL Week 17

We are down to the last week of the NFL regular season. I won’t lie I was disappointed in the performance of Justin Jefferson. Jefferson was held to 1 catch for 15 yards by the shit talking corner Jaire Alexander who backed it up. The Minnesota Vikings play the Chicago Bears and although they have a losing record…the team is historically known for being good on the defensive side of the ball. Jefferson would need 194 yards to break Calvin Johnson’s record. And as optimistic as I tend to be I just don’t see him having a game of that caliber when the game itself doesn’t effect playoff seeding. 

Its crazy how, I think just 4 short weeks ago, Tyreek Hill was sitting pretty with 1500 yards and well above pace to break 2,000 yards in a season. The Miami Dolphins face the New York Jets who have the #2 allowed yards per game (192.5) defense. Cheetah Hill would need 278 yards to surpass Calvin Johnson and like I mentioned above I don’t see that happening. I guess we wideout fans will have to wait another season to see a wideout surpass 2,000. 

The Wideout of the Week award goes to Mike Evans of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Evans had a monstrous day with 10 catches for 207 yards and 3 touchdowns. Whoever the corner on that right side was, I’m sure cried after the game. Evans scored on plays of 63, 51, and 30 yards respectively. He even dropped another 50 yard pass that would’ve been a touchdown on the goal line in the 3rd quarter. 

Davante Adams was up to his usual domination of whooping db’s ass all over the field. And I appreciate his performance especially after hearing he had to take time away from the facility because the team chose to sit Derek Carr. Adams is playing at an extremely high level right now. Body language is everything and in this moment Adams body language exudes positivity and vivaciousness. In what was once called “The Battle of The Bay” the Raiders played one of their best games of the season against a San Francisco 49er team that I feel will be in the NFC Championship game. Adams caught 7 passes for 153 yards and scored two touchdowns. Adams leads the league with 14 receiving touchdowns and is 3rd in yards with 1,443. I like how he’s bounced back from a slow start. And with the way he’s played I know have to consider him for the Wideout of the Year award. 

Chris Godwin has quietly put himself in position to reach 1,000 yards on the season. He needs 32 yards and will have done so for the 3rd time in his 6 year career. And this is nothing short of amazing considering he tore his ACL a little over a year ago and only missed two games because of it. While Evans dominated the day, Godwin found his way underneath coverage to finish the afternoon with 9 catches for 120 yards. The Buccaneers are hot and whoever gets this team in the first round will definitely have to be ready. 

D.J. Moore has found a way to make plays this season. I think this is my 3rd or 4th time writing about the young wideout. One thing that makes me laugh when watching tape is knowing Moore is going to drop an easy one. But to his defense a lot of those really fast dudes usually have catching difficulties. Moore caught 6 passes for 117 yards and scored on an all-go switch up the left sideline. With one week remaining Moore would need 122 yards to have 1,000 yards on the season. 

I’m a lover/connoisseur of the West Coast offense. I learned it my last two years of college playing for the 3rd winningest coach in NCAA history Dick Tomey. And I won a championship at Mater Dei while coaching under the same offensive philosophy. Brandon Aiyuk caught 66% of his passes with a west coast staple…2 jet lion…also known as slant. You have to have fearless wideouts in your system to run slants effectively. The wideouts can’t be no punk bitch. Aiyuk had 9 catches for 101 yards and a touchdown on a nice release for the three-yard slant.

Last on the list is Dallas Cowboys #1 wideout Ceedee Lamb. Despite early struggles with dropping the ball, Lamb has roared his way to #7 in yards with 1,307. He has played big time ball and I like how is game has progressed over the season. Now he won’t win or be in the discussion for Wideout of the Year but if I had to choose a Most Improved wideout than Lamb would probably be in the contention for that. Against the Titans Lamb caught 11 balls for 100 yards with zero tubs.

NFL Week 16

What a phenomenal weekend of wideout play. I never thought I’d see the day when a wideout would break the daunted 2,000 yard receiving barrier that no one has ever achieved. Justin “The Man” Jefferson only needs to average 104/g for a total of 208 yards to achieve 2,000 on the season. I damn near feel like he will get that this weekend and then pad his numbers to end the regular season. Jefferson and Ceedee Lamb will split the wideout of the week award. Jefferson finished his day with 12 catches for 133 yards and 1 touchdown on a tough dig route near the end zone. His team won and the Minnesota Vikings appear to be having a magical season. Lamb had 10 catches for 120 yards with two scores. I love the aggressiveness Lamb displays and his hunger after the catch. 

Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill are clearly being hindered right now. Yes, Waddle had 5 catches for 143 yards and 1 amazing touchdown where he out ran defenders and broke a few tackles for an 84-yard score. Hill had 4 catches for 103 with no scores. There are many times the speedy duo is open and Tua just doesn’t have it. I’m hoping Bridgewater can get the ball to “Cheetah” Hill so he can have a shot at 2,000 in his best season to date. 

Tee Higgins of the Cincinnati Bengals has quietly balled under the radar. He currently is 11th with 1,022 yards on the season. The Bengals look hot and I’d hate to be a defense facing their trio of wideouts. Higgins finished the day with 8 catches for 128 yards. Jerry Jeudy looked explosive this weekend. He runs like my frat brother who ran 4.26 3 times in college during junior pro day. Jeudy is knocked knee, which helps his agility tremendously. Too bad Russell Wilson has performed awfully which has stifled Jeudy’s productivity. On the afternoon he finished the game with 6 catches for 117 yards. 

Devonta Smith and AJ Brown both had productive outings against the Dallas Cowboys. Smith had 8 catches for 113 yards and 2 TD’s. Brown had 6 catches for 103 yards with no tubs. They didn’t have Jalen Hurts at the helm and found a way to compete in a close loss. I look forward for these boys to put on a show and make a run at the Super Bowl. 

The Detroit Lions have weapons all over the field. A name I hadn’t heard all year DJ Chark, caught 4 passes for 108 yards with zero touchdowns. Chark is fast and if the Lions happen to sneak into the playoffs I would not want to face this explosive offense. 

Keenan Allen had a good day at the office. Allen caught 11 catches for 104 yards and was a huge factor in the Chargers win. It’s satisfying seeing Allen healthy and finishing a full game. 

Kendrick Bourne rounds out the list of wideouts who had at least 100 yards receiving. Bourne scored against a Bengals defense who hadn’t given up a touchdown in the second half of their past 7 games. He finished his day with 6 catches for 100 yards and that lone score.

NFL Week 15

A.J. Brown came to play this weekend. Against the Bears Brown finished his afternoon with 9 receptions for 181 yards with zero touchdowns. After watching the tape I’m sure Brown is mad at himself because he easily could’ve had a 200 yard performance but a few drops kept him short of setting a personal record. Brown made plays all over the field helping his team to victory. DeVonta Smith was on the other side of the formation getting off. Smith caught a 45 yard bender route midway through the 2nd quarter and followed that catch up with a sweet inside fade where he jumped up moss’n the defender. Smith finished the game with 5 catches for 126 yards. It’ll be interesting to see how the Eagles finish the year considering QB Jalen Hurts is battling a shoulder injury. 

In the greatest game I have ever watched this…K.J. Osborn was born. With his team down 33 points with 8:22 remaining in the 3rd quarter Osborn scored the teams first touchdown. Osborn had a few drops early but finished the afternoon with 10 catches for 157 yards and that lone score. He and Justin Jefferson put on a clinic. The leagues leader in yards Justin Jefferson added to his total with 12 catches for 123 yards and one touchdown. Watching the Minnesota Vikings comeback was nothing short of astonishing. But even more climatic would be to see Jefferson break 2000 yards this season. With 3 games remaining Jefferson just needs to average 125.6 yards a game to be the record holder.

Ceedee Lamb has had an impressive second half of the season. I won’t lie I kind of wrote him off after many of the early season drops he was having. But as of late he’s been balling out. Against the Jacksonville Jaguars Lamb caught all 7 pass attempts for 126 yards. He didn’t score but Lamb played aggressive and hungry all afternoon. Lamb broke tackles and did not let the first defender bring him down. He’s eclipsed 1000 yards receiving already and has a chance to possibly get over 1400 for the year. 

Speed Kills. I couldn’t imagine playing wideout with the type of speed that Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill Have. Waddle had over 100 yards with just two of his catches. He finished the game with 3 catches for 114 yards and one touchdown. As I stated in one of my posts earlier this year, Tua would be the X-factor to how productive the wideouts in Miami could be. His inability to push the ball down the field and his inconsistency with ball placement has hindered the duo tremendously. 

This weeks WOW award goes to Zay Jones of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Zay was a huge part of why his team erased a 17-point lead against the Dallas Cowboys. Jones had completed the afternoon with a magician’s hat trick. Jones scored on a shallow cross, a stutter and go, plus a snag route on the goal line. The jaguars have had a wideout make the blog 3 straight weeks. Their wideout core is trending up and I wouldn’t want to be a team facing them as they make a push to secure a wild card spot in the playoffs. 

Last but certainly worth it is another name new to my ears. Jahan Dotson of the Washington Commanders had himself a fantastic game in a losing effort. Dotson caught 4 balls for 105 yards and touchdown-on a bang post he caught between two defenders in the endzone. His highlight catch came on a playaction post where he moss’d a defender for a 61 yard completion. 

As the season nears its end I want all the wideouts to finish strong. Push a little harder, do a little more, and ball to the wheels fall. Wideouts Let’s Go!

NFL Week 14

After an explosion of wideout scores last week this week wasn’t so ambitious. We actually had our lowest output of the season with only five players having 100+ yards receiving. This weeks wideout of the week is no other than the man leading the NFL with 1500 yards receiving Justin “The Man” Jefferson. Jefferson had a monstrous day at the office catching 11 passes for 223 yards. He didn’t score but what he did Sunday was nothing short of amazing. Jefferson is faster than I originally thought and his route running has improved tremendously over the season. Justin Jefferson needs to average 125 yards to break 2000 in a season and wideout fanatics like myself are on the edge of our seats hoping the young man breaks the record. 

This is my first time hearing this name all season. And I’m sure when your record is 1-11-1 I for damn sure wouldn’t not be paying attention to the losers that the Houston Texans are. Despite all that Chris Moore had a game worthy of being mentioned this week. The wideout showed toughness and playmaking ability all afternoon while catching a bunch of flat routes. He even had a 1-hand highlight catch along the right sideline against the Dallas Cowboys and finished with a deep post late in the game to push him over 100 yards receiving. Moore finished the day with 10 catches for 124 yards and zero touchdowns. 

Ja’Marr “Chase Your Dreams” was back in action. Chase caught 10 passes for 119 yards and 1 touchdown. On that lone score Chase got a great inside release and when he made his post step the ball was right in his lap for the score. I noticed he caught a lot of out-routes from the slot and had a really nice back shoulder catch late in the game. The Cincinnati Bengals are trending upwards and having Chase back in the line-up will give them another chance to return to the Super Bowl. 

These last two names haven’t been called all year. Mike Williams of the San Diego Chargers had his first 100-yard game of the season. Williams caught 6 passes for 116 yards with 1 score. Justin Herbert looked like the best quarterback in the NFL with some of the passes he completed to his wideouts. Hopefully Williams and Keenan Allen can stay healthy because with those two plus Josh Palmer the Chargers are damn near unstoppable. 

Donovan Peoples-Jones had a really good game. Jones caught 8 passes for 114 yards with zero touchdowns. I like the physicality Jones played with. He took some big hits on a few of his dig routes. I liked the way he didn’t back down and stayed playing strong throughout. I know Cleveland is out of the playoff hunt but Deshaun Watson is back and I believe they can win three out their final four games. 

With 4 weeks in the season remaining I’m exuberant to see if the wideout record will be broken by either Justin Jefferson or Tyreek Hill or both. Either way the wideouts will bring some excitement to end out the season. Wideouts Let’s Go and Finish Strong!

NFL Week 13

Weeks like this where 8 out of 10 wideouts scored is what I love to see. The wideout of the week award goes to Davante Adams of the Oakland Raiders. Adams looked and played fast. He ran great routes all game and I love his stop-n-go route up the left side for one of his two touchdowns. The Raiders are on a 3-game winning streak and if Adams production stays at this level…he’ll be challenging Tyreek Hill, Justin Jefferson, and Stefon Diggs for the receiving crown. 

With a monstrous performance from a name I didn’t know till this weekend, Garret Wilson of the New York Jets played exceptional. He caught 8 balls for 162 yards. Wilson did not score but after watching his tape and the Jets upgrading at quarterback I think this kid will finish the season with one or two more 100 yard performances. 

Tyreek “the Cheetah” Hill did what he does best and that’s ball. Hill caught 9 passes for 146 yards and scored on a 45-yard post pattern for his lone touchdown. Hill did this against a really physical and tough San Francisco defense. With 5 games left in the regular season, Hill is 621 yards from 2,000. If the mercurial wideout averages 124 yards during those 5 games…we will have witnessed the greatest season ever by a wideout.

Tyler Lockett had himself quite the game. Lockett caught 9 balls for 128 yards and scored on a beautiful over-route where he turned on the jets outracing defenders to the end zone. On the other side of the formation was his counter-part DK Metcalf. He himself caught all 8 passes thrown his way for 127 yards and 1 score. Metcalf finished the game with a tough slant catch while taking a hit and Jalen Ramsey draped on his back while scoring. I love watching good shit. 

A.J. Brown is so good that he got his former GM of the Tennessee Titans fired because he traded the phenomenal wideout who returned to humiliate them. Brown put on a performance that led to an 8 catch day for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns. Brown scored on an out-n-up and a fade that basically fell into his lap. 

Amon-Ra St. Brown had a nice game. It appears that Jared Goff has found his go to wideout. Amon scored on an out route during the first half. He runs some really good slants and I like the explosiveness he displays on the screens and bubbles. 

Terry Mclaurin got his day going early. His first catch was a 1-handed, broken tackle, shallow cross for 15 yards. Mclaurin caught a few slants and hitches and I like how he broke a few tackles on screens. 

Christian Kirk eclipsed the 100 yard mark with 104 yards on 6 catches. He was the second wideout on the list who didn’t score. Kirk only needs a 177 yards to reach 1,000 proving the money spent on him this off-season was well worth it.

And Lastly Devonta Smith showed out opposite of his boy A.J. Brown. Smith caught 5 balls for 102 yards and 1 touchdown. His third catch was a beautiful post pattern for a 40 yard TD. I look forward to him and Brown eclipsing 1000 yards receiving in their first year together. 

We have five more weeks left in the season and I expect the wideouts to finish strong, set new records, and have fun along the way. Let’s Go!

NFL Week 12

The wideout of the week award goes to Justin “The Man” Jefferson. The 3rd year pro was sensational. Jefferson caught 9 balls for 139 yards and had one touchdown on a shallow cross where he took a big hit as he crossed the goal line. He caught the ball all over the field and had some sweet catches. I like his run after catch on a smooth basic route he ran in the 2nd quarter. I also love his ability to make the tough catches as he did on an inside fade against two defenders. Jefferson ensured his team victory with an out-n-up route where he took a big hit from the safety right as he caught the ball. He trails Tyreek Hill by 1 yard with 1,232 on the season. With 6 games left each wideout would have to average 128 yards to eclipse 2,000. I’m excited at the possibility of two wideouts possibly breaking Calvin Johnson’s record. 

Zay Jones of the Jacksonville Jaguars made his first appearance of the season on this blog. Jones caught balls from multiple routes. Had he scored and not dropped 2 hitches, Zay would be the wideout of the week. Jones finished the afternoon with 11 catches for 145 yards including a 2-point version that sealed the victory for his team. 

Amon-Ra St. Brown had himself quite the day on Thanksgiving. St. Brown finished his day with 9 catches for 122 yards and 1 touchdown. Amon opened the game with a sweet slant that shook the defender badly. He caught a dig and broke a few tackles which is reminiscent to watching him up close in high school. St. Brown is playing fast and it appears the 2nd year pro will have a chance to eclipse 1,000 yards receiving once again. He currently has 716 yards with 6 games to go. Let’s go kid. 

Tee Higgins is flying under the radar but he leads his team with 826 yards. Ja’Maar Chase has missed 4 games but that has not stopped the Bengals who have been 3-1 during that stretch with Higgins a big part of why they are 7-4. Higgins had a nice slant where he broke a few tackles and looked pretty nimble. He had a few catches toward the sideline and caught a nice fade for a touchdown. With a little over 3 minutes on the clock, Higgins ran a stutter-go route and caught the fade 1-handed with the defender draped all over him ensuring his team’s victory. 

Christian Watson of the Green Bay Packers is slowly becoming a house hold name. The 6’5 wideout can fly and he showed his speed on a slant route of 63 yards for a touchdown against one of the better defensive teams in the NFL (Eagles). Watson has eclipsed 100 yards in 2 of the 3 past games scoring an impressive 6 touchdowns. If only he was targeted earlier in the season the Packers could have a better record. 

It’s refreshing to see Chris Godwin make this list. I tore my meniscus and mcl in college and while I didn’t have to have surgery, I understand the pain and rehab plus what knee injuries do to athletes psychologically. Godwin definitely has lost a step and that’s ok. He never was a burner but if he wants improve his quickness and route running he may need to come see me this off-season. Godwin caught 12 balls for 110 yards and 1 touchdown. I don’t know why Brady threw him two dumb-ass screen plays that went for a combined 3 yards. But having him involved improves their chances to win substantially. I mean his last name is GodWin.

Ceedee Lamb had 6 catches on 11 targets for 106 yards. Lamb’s productivity has increased having Prescott back. Lamb made a sweet 1-hand catch on a stop-n-go and almost scored on an over route where he was tripped up about the 3 yard line on 25 yard gain. D.J. Moore had a decent afternoon with 4 catches for 103 yards and a touchdown. Moore can flat out fly and he showed his speed on 52 yard big post for his lone score. Moore will definitely drop a pass which he did on his first catch opportunity and later on a pass that led to an interception. But all in all he’s being productive with majority of the plays coming his way. 

Another week to be great wideouts! Play fast, make play, and finish strong!
