Petco, in recent months, has really been pushing sales for GloFish. They are tetras, danios, and sharks that have been genetically altered in embryo to produce brightly colored, neon florescent fish. Or…. so they claim. It’s what I had believed, but today I got a good look at a GloFish that had died and been returned. The owner had frozen the fish but it had thawed by the time they returned to the store, and the water that it had produced was the exact shade of bright neon pink as the fish.

Petco GloFish are dyed. Thats the only explanation. If they were really genetically altered the water would not have been the same color as the fish. Dying or injecting fish is extremely cruel and harmful, with a high mortality rate and for survivors a shortened lifespan. This is not a practice that should be supported. So, please don’t buy them.

They’re not dyed. GloFish have been genetically modified as embryos with snippets of jellyfish and coral DNA. It codes for flourescence. That’s it.

The water probably turned pink from myoglobin leaking from the thawed fish. Freezing bursts cells and releases myoglobin from the muscle tissue. It’s why the meat in your fridge oozes a pink liquid.

They’re not dyed. The original strain of glofish had a florescent (jellyfish or coral) protein coding region inserted into their DNA. so when they transcribe/translate that DNA it becomes a glowy glowy protein. The glofish sold in stores are just descended from the originals.

Wingless fruit flies (like the ones people use for food for fish/reptiles/amphibians/bugs) are similar. The original strain has the wingless genes and any decendants from them also have the wingless genes. The only difference is that the Glofish protein was artificially inserted and was not a mutation.

I have a school of glofish all of which have been bought at petco, and because of their price I buy them in small batches to slowly build up my school. So I have several different batches of glofish and I can tell you that over the months none of their colors have faded or “leaked.” Why are you spreading misinformation based on one example? Why not voice your concerns to others in the hobby who keep glofish and ask if they have had any experience with petco glofish losing their colors or any signs of stress or illness related to being dyed?
