like, I myself have also never lived on the rez so I can really only speak to the experiences I’ve had shared with me by friends and family—and frankly, there are some things my loved ones just straight up won’t even talk about because it was just that fucking bad. but with the way some folks on this site (in particular, as I’ve mentioned before, white Europeans who seem to have convinced themselves that just because they’re not American means they’re absolved of all the evils of white supremacy and imperialism) talk about Native people living in the imperial core it feels really clear to me that a lot of these people have never even, like, attempted to so much as imagine just how fucking bad the conditions on most reservations are. they’re certainly not doing any research into it. just, like, speaking loudly and confidently about how privileged we are to live in the US without a shred of consideration for the fact that these places were intentionally constructed to have the worst living conditions possible. and like that’s not to say that you can’t have any semblance of a good life there, I’ve also heard so many stories of joy and love and community on the rez and I don’t want to take away from that. but those things are hard fought for through the fucking incredible power and resilience of what it is to be a native person surviving genocide, they happen IN SPITE of all the odds stacked against us. I promise that you as a white person in fucking France or whatever are not worse off than generations of people forced into reservations, with extremely limited access to food and clean water and healthcare. for real.

and of course the justification is always “oh well that’s such a small percentage of the US population though” as if that’s not literally the same logic used by the government to allow these people to continue to suffer, and as though population percentage is supposed to make me just stop caring about my relatives. like that just doesn’t make you look better. and if you’re from a colonizing European country it was your fucking ancestors that created the conditions that led to people suffering today. shut the fuck up!

Hey so a small thing that literally everyone who sees this is capable of is correcting any “used to” statements about native people in this country.

“Native people used to live in this National Park” No. They still do.

“Native people used to tell these stories-” No. They still do.

“Native people used to use this plant as a natural remedy-” No. They still do.

Better yet, familiarize yourself with the tribes local to you. Odds are, they do not yet have federal recognition. You can still read the stories they have to share, you can share their ongoing battle for recognition with others, you can sign petitions and spread the word to others to do so as well. But do something.

I love how you have a whole entire side of the American internet going all "uhhh The Odyssey is a fictional story, of course it won't be culturally accurate".

Yeah well it's a cultural myth. A Greek myth. A Greek story. Set in Greek culture.

This whole ass movie is basically MCU but make it ancient mythology MCU. The costumes are what an American would assume ancient Greece looked like. The cast is a mess and full of American big names. And you have actors who accepted the role just because of Nolan!!! How do you NOT read the script beforehand???

It's insane that you're going to take a country's mythological writing and make it Americanised entirely, while ghosting Greece's biggest armour blacksmith which could've made you accurate costumes for your stupid movie.

I care. Cause whenever you fuckers decide to make a vampire story for example, you set it in a random place that vaguely looks Romanian, throw Catholicism in when that's not the case, and you make your Hollywood stars speak broken Romanian cause hiring a local actor is too hard. Nosferatu and IWTV are the only instances when the director bothered to both do research and include local actors into their media.

Peaky Blinders is another example of Americans butchering a cultural aspect that THEY decided they wanted in the movie. Besides the broken Romanian they try to speak, apparently they were meant to speak RROMANI. Which is an entirely different language!

So it ain't that crazy for someone who's Greek to look at this abomination of a movie and get angry over everything they've done to it. I fully get it when people look at your culture and think "this is cool I'll take it without researching shit and make it my own original thing, while not including the thoughts of anyone who's part of said culture in it".
