Taissa dumping her white girlfriend before she heads to an HBCU will infinitely be a more interesting story of internalized homophobia and fear of being one’s true self TO ME like yall don’t know what it’s like on those campuses being queer, and it would have been so much worse in the 90s/00s.

Going from Howard to Columbia would have been a complete inverse of which aspect of her identity is more accepted, but, regardless, she can never show anyone her real self (Other Tai) ever again. She experiences queerphobia at a predominantly black school, the first time in her life she was in community with other black people, and then it gets flipped when she goes to Columbia and experiences racism at a queer-friendly school in a big city, the first (or second, since I think the Wilderness can count in this case lmao) time in her life she was in community with other visibly and out queer people. The guilt of already feeling performative being a mixed race black girl from the suburbs going to an HBCU getting intensified at the thought of introducing a white girl as her partner to her AKA sorority sisters, and all this makes her think being queer was just not an option for her. Then this guilt transitions into the guilt of going to Columbia and meeting openly black queer people in the city, thereby forcing her to realize she can’t suppress her queerness any longer. But she already broke things off with Van so she feels undeserving of her love anymore >>>>
