Photo by @stephsinclairpix / @tooyoungtowed – In honor of International Women’s Day I’m sharing this photo I made of Nighat Parveen teaching Uzma, 4, how to write the alphabet as other students look on inside the girls school in the village of Meerwala in Pakistan. The school was started by Mukhtar Mai, the resilient Pakistani woman who was gang-raped in 2002 as payback for an “honor crime” allegedly committed by her brother. While custom called for rape victims to kill themselves to avoid dishonor, Ms. Mukhtar spoke out, bringing her assailants to justice. She went on to become a human-rights activist, opening schools and running an ambulance service and a women’s aid group in her village. After much opposition, the historic Punjab Protection of Women Against Violence Bill 2015 was finally passed last month and provides, for the first time in the history of the country, comprehensive protection to women against a range of crimes.
