get to know troy bolton :
Growing up, there wasn’t ever a thing that Troy Bolton wanted that he couldn’t have. Not to say he was spoiled rotten because he wasn’t - but he was vaguely treated like a little prince of his house. His parents adored him and thought him to be the perfect son, a title that Troy took close to his heart and worked hard to maintain even to this day. In school he was always popular, even from a young age. Eventually becoming practically the king of the school as one of the star players on the champion basketball team.
Surprisingly though, despite being one of the most sought after boys in the school - Troy never really dated for the first two years of high school. He was so focused on basketball, his grades, and his friends - it just never seemed like dating was really worth all the hype or that important. That was, at least, until he went on a ski trip with his parents for new years his junior year. And there was where he met Gabriella Montez and his whole life changed. Not only just because of her, but also the forced karaoke session they were thrown into where Troy started to discover his love of music.
Though he had been into Gabriella, he didn’t think anything would come of it. She lived who knows where and he was at East Echo High. They were never going to meet again, so he went back to school not expecting anything to change. But then she walked into his homeroom, taking his breath away and tilting his whole world upside down.
From that day his whole school experience was different - he and Gabriella (and then their entire friend group) got involved in theater, he had a girlfriend, and to his parents it looked like his priorities were all out of line. With his dad as his coach it was hard, balancing his new passion along with the one his father thought he should put all his focus on. There were a few times when he lost his sight of what was really important to him and his own happiness, but in the end he always found his way back to what mattered.
When the time came to decide where he was going to go to college, there were plenty of voices in his ear trying to tell him what to do. It had been a hard decision to make. Ms. Darbus encouraged him to go to New York for theater, his father assumed he’d go to an American college for basketball, then Gabriella’s early admission to Stanford made him want to follow right after her. He’d applied to schools for all three before deciding he wasn’t going to go for any of them. He had to do what he wanted, what was best for him - not anybody else. Leaving the island just wasn’t something he wanted to do. It’s his home and he wasn’t ready to say goodbye to it yet, not even just for school. So he attended a university on the island - the one with the best basketball team as well as a decent theater department.
When Gabriella went to Stanford they decided to try long distance. Though they tried their hardest… it simply just wasn’t working out. Between the time difference, his basketball and theater extracurriculars as well as his classes, and her heavy course load - there just was hardly any time for each other. And though Troy tried to deny it, they both knew it wasn’t working. When Gabriella returned for winter break their freshman year, they officially broke up.
It was hard. Probably the hardest thing Troy’s ever had to deal with - this real and official end. At the time, and honestly still to this day, he was fully convinced that Gabriella was his soulmate so losing her hurt like hell. Thankfully he had Sharpay to help him through it. A true friendship budded between them and he might even say that after Chad she’s his closest friend now.
Dated a lot after the breakup but nothing was ever serious nor did it ever last long. It was like every single relationship was just another rebound as he never truly found himself getting over Gabriella.
Studied secondary education in school with a focus on theater. He has now since replaced Ms. Darbus as the East Echo High drama teacher as well as the boy’s basketball coach.
