This is Constance Lloyd, who married Oscar Wilde in 1884. Since we’ve been talking about Oscar all month, I thought we devote a post to Constance, who did more with her life than just marry Oscar. She also:
Spoke fluent French and Italian
Wrote for children, including the book There Was Once, based on stories from her grandmother
Advocated for women’s right to serve in Parliament
Campaigned for dress reform, advocating practical clothing such as split skirts, rather than cumbersome and tight-fitting clothes of the time
Contributed to newspapers and journals
Became involved with the spiritualism group Theosophist Order of the Golden Dawn, which believed that artworks could come to life
