I was ten, almost eleven. The first sign that something was wrong was when our principal pulled my fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Dixon, into the hallway to talk. When she came back into the classroom, my friend Liz and I excitedly whispered how she must have gotten fired because of how upset she looked. Although Mrs. Dixon ended up being one of my favorite teachers; She had already moved my desk twice a week and a half in to the school year because I was such a ‘Chatty Cathy’ so I wasn’t her biggest fan.

School continued as normal as I remember the rest of the day until it was time to go outside for recess. Mrs. Dixon had us all sit down by our desks because she wanted to talk to us before we left. That’s when I knew something was up. She then told us that planes had hit the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. She didn’t give us a lot of details but I remember her saying that she felt that we needed to know.

My parents never tried to hide any of the footage from me. Being from New York State, I had a lot of questions about the attack on The City. We lived far enough away (think Canadian border) that I never felt unsafe, but I wanted all the information I could get. I don’t know why now, but I think my ten year old brain somehow thought I was going to forget. I could never forget.

The news footage makes me more emotional now than it ever did fifteen years ago. I think it’s because I am now able to comprehend the emotional toll of the loss of life better at twenty-five than I ever could have at ten.

Our country has been at war for the majority of my life. While I don’t agree with a lot of the political decisions that were made in reaction to these horrific events, today is not about that. September 11th is a day to remember, reflect, and mourn.
