pulling his hat off, his hand runs through slightly sweat dampened hair. “ worth the view though? ” rhett looks out at the expanse of forest and field, where they starkly meet out in the distance. the green is still that, bold and striking. he’s been up to this viewpoint more times than he can count, probably even more times than he’s been thrown off a bull. it doesn’t lose its luster. he also knows now to not come unprepared. gesturing with just the shift of his chin out, “ there’s water in your bag f’r when ya start breathing again. ”

rhett lives on what he would very affectionately and humbly call a small fixer upper -- it's plenty big for a single person and he doesn't think he really needs anything grander than what he has.

these are some picture references for sort of how i picture the house to look like -- it's got an upstairs but not really a big one. it's paint is chipping and yellowed from the sun.

the first floor has a couple of rooms: one towards the back for laundry and cleaning off, plus a bathroom right beside it, the entry way and living room, the kitchen with a dining area, his room with a bathroom, some closets, another bedroom, another bathroom, and an office he doesn't use. this is the main floor of the house, the most lived in, and the one that has undergone the most changes. upstairs, there's a two tiny rooms up there, a little half bathroom, but mostly it's become a place for storage and guests when he has them.

all of the rooms are a little bit different in their states of repair, cleanliness, and so on. over the years, rhett's been very slowly working on fixing them up and changing the walls, repainting them, and just making them habitable.

he bought the ranch when it was very worn down, and he got a great deal on it because it really is was in disrepair. for the longest time, he was just battling with the stove and getting power to not knockout every single time the winds were harsh.

he's got a front covered porch area, and out front is where he parks his truck and anything else for the ranch tends to live. not far from the main house is the barn and that sort of lives in the same state as his home, aka in need of work. it's home to his horses though and some of the other stuff and animals he's got.

@lvebug     :    WHERE IS THE MOST OUTLANDISH PLACE THAT THE RANCH HAS FOUND ITSELF? IS IT ALWAYS LOCATED IN A RURAL/FARMLAND AREA OR CAN IT INEXPLICABLY BE IN THE CENTER OF A CITY IF SOMEONE THERE IS LOST?

the ranch always finds itself in rural or farmland areas. you will never stumble upon the ranch in the middle of a big urban city if there's no logic to it being there. you won't find it in suburbs either. if you drive outside the populated areas and start to get into more rural roads and long stretches then sure you can maybe find the ranch out there. it doesn't really have neighbors to it and it has to exist on a wide open space given that rhett owns quite the decent chunk of property.

the ranch is always somewhere in the united states or southern parts of canada. rhett's never really too certain or aware where precisely he is and he always is able to dodge the questions until an answer is pointed out to him or made clear and then it feels sort of seamless to him, as if he's always been there.

all roads can become roads to the ranch, but there are some limitations to where it can go. there is no outlandish place for the ranch to find itself, or rather there hasn't been and there never will be.

" what's that supposed t'mean? i'm - im already makin' 'em? " he stares hard, vision blurring on the edges and tunneling around until it's just perry that's in focus; his jaw shifts, teeth grinding. he has to breathe out, open his mouth so his jaw doesn't get stuck in its tightness. rhett's so quick to it -- his anger, his defensiveness. that's what he thinks it is and he wonders when he started getting this way with perry, his brother, his brother perry. this ain't his parents, this ain't his mother howling so loud in his ears, or his father ending conversations before rhett can even get through his thought.

his head shakes, the legs of his chair scraping on the floor as he shifts, a slight turn of his body as if he might hop right out his seat to run off or maybe shove his finger in perry's chest. when his mouth opens, it's not rage that tumbles out though, it's something more disappointed and hollow, even though rhett doesn't even know to recognize it, " i thought -- see, i thought you'd get it, y'know? i thought you'd know what- what it feels like or somethin'. " it's not anger, maybe it's been this gutted feeling the whole time, but it feels accusatory.

perry lets loose a billowing exhale, a long-suffering noise that flares his nostrils and makes his ears pop. one hand rises to pinch the bridge of his nose, thumb and forefinger squeezing before expanding outward to press into his eyes; uncomfortably so, applying pressure until the darkness bursts with bright stars, nail impressions faint on his eyelids.

"it don't... it don't mean nothin'," perry starts, hoping the way he drops his voice and stammers over his syllables will convince rhett he's drunk: that he doesn't know a damn thing about the words coming out of his mouth. nevermind that all of perry is wound tight, curled like a snake readying to strike, cheeks red and expression grim; the look in his eyes when they reopen a volatile mixture of fear and budding anger.

but that fights leaves with the sudden noise, perry flinching away from rhett with a shuddering sigh. he presses the glass of his drink to his neck, ignorant - or maybe unbothered - by the fact it tips too much, dark beads dribbling down his shirt. the violent shake of his head worsens it, and finally perry abandons the beer, sniffling as he bends to set it at his feet.

"i don't know what you want me to get, rhett." it's said unevenly, a little frustrated, but mostly, it's tired. perry curls his fingers, working them in and out of loose fists, unconsciously beginning to rock himself, trying to look at his brother but not quite managing to lift his eyes above rhett's chest. "you want me to... what? say i'm unhappy? that it?" he wants it to be a challenge, but perry's voice cracks, and he scoffs. "i'm not..." he pauses, lip twitching, inhaling sharply before he continues, "i didn't know that you... are you?" his voice shakes a little. "-unhappy?"

his hands slowly slower, " don't blame you f'r bein' cautious. " he can't know but he can try to understand what she might have encountered. " if you're not picky, there's a place couple miles south of here, usually got no shortage of rooms. beds are kind of shitty, but . . . beds a bed. " gesturing with a slight nod of his head towards her, he's not sure why he makes the offer so suddenly, " you, uh, need a fill up or something? y'know . . . water? 'm guessin' you came from a ways away and if you're gonna head towards the inn or what not, you've got more of a ways ahead of ya. "
