Author Visit with Elizabeth MacLeod
On June 15th, grade 3 and 4 students had author Elizabeth MacLeod visit with them to discuss some her books and writing. Ms MacLeod has been writing for over 20 years and some of her recent books include 'Canada Year by Year', 'Colossal Canada: 100 Epic Facts and Feats', ' A History of Just about Everything' and 'Bunny the Brave War Horse'.
Ms Macleod gave a dynamic and engaging talk filled with interesting stories and historical details which focused mainly on figures and events in Canadian history. Students were particularly fascinated with the memorabilia and stories from WWI and WWII. During her visit, Farzana interviewed Ms MacLeod as part of the Wilkinson Podcast. Author Visit with Melanie Florence
On January 26th, the grade 5 and 6 students had author Melanie Florence visit with them to discuss some her books and writing. Ms Florence is the author of a number of books with a First Nations and Inuit focus including ‘Jordin Tootoo’, Righting Canada’s Wrongs: Residential Schools’ and ‘Missing Nimama’. The latter, a picture book about Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women, won the TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award for 2016. Ms Florence’s presentation focused largely around the terrible legacy of the residential school system in Canada. Her talk was well received and students asked very thoughtful and insightful questions about this shameful past. After her visit, Melanie Florence agreed to be interviewed for the Wilkinson Podcast. Marty Chan Author Visit
On May 13th, Wilkinson hosted Marty Chan as part of the Canadian Children’s Book Centre TD Book Week. Mr Chan is the author of numerous books including 'The Marty Chan Mysteries', 'Bigfoot series', 'Erich Weisz Chronicles' and 'The Keeper of the Vault series'. He spoke to our grades 4, 5 and 6 classes about where he gets his ideas and about the writing process. A number of students remarked about his message that stories are everywhere and in everything we do. They loved his stories (you could hear a pin drop in our carpeted library!) and, of course, his magic tricks! There were at least 20 students on the afternoon of the visit who wanted to check out one of his books!
