When David picked me up while I was hitchhiking in the heat, I decided to return the favor and go to his to throw him and his family a pancake party. He has a cute permaculture farm in angaston with a small vineyard. We picked different kind of berries added some sour cream and Cointreau: my favorite combination so far. This is Michael, the slum celebrity. I met him briefly in Amritsar and we decided to meet again in Delhi and Gokarna. Later he and his family adopted me in Sydney, But first things first: a pancake adventure in Delhi. He invited me to the slum where he worked at an orphanage. It was Diwali, so we would make pancakes for the kids there. He’d worked here for almost six months, and when he arrived men and kids would rush out their homes to welcome him back, shake his hand, talk about the latest gossips. It is truly amazing to see what a difference he made, simply by walking through a village showing interest and compassion. That is the true way of traveling. The beginning of a great day in Delhi: on the bus to Delhi Center, the conductor asked me 50 rupee for a bus ticket. Right before we arrived at my destination a man who was sitting behind me, started making a scene. People were staring at me and at the conductor. Another man got involved and a third. the whole bus was looking at me, some worried, some grinning. After a while the conductor waved me. I didn't know what’s going on, but he handed me 30 rupees. “he asked you too much” one of the arguing men said. The other stood in the aisle in front of the bus and gave a speech to all the people in the bus. I don't speak hindi, but by the way he spoke and the way people looked at me, I could understand that it is about integrity and treating guest with respect. Soon I became one of them. I raced with Amy and his Royal Enfield from place to place, to find an extra frying pan. Finally we had two big buckets of batter, two frying pans, two stoves, a big Sikh knife to cut the pancakes with and a group od young blue guys with starting or fully grown beards to hand out, film and manage the adventure. As per India Etiquette, the guests were pushing each other out of the way to be the first to get a pancake. It was great to see, until I saw big men pushing away a young kid. Surjit invited me to his family farm in Jalandhar. I stayed for four days but could have easily stayed there for a month. In the morning I would take a bath with the Buffaloes. His aunts would make fresh lassi every day and great vegetarian food. We did Some tractor surfing. I was experimenting with eggless pancakes because I planned handing out pancakes at the golden temple and eggs are considered meat. I met with Gurjit in a restaurant that was top choice according to the Lonely Planet, so it said on the window with big red letters. Gurjit had a long black beard, he wore a blue turban, a long blue coat, half-long white trousers and two swords. Ami was wearing the same uniform but added a red iPad to the blue uniform, which gave the whole thing extra swag. “What’s with the bracelet?” I aksed pointing at the sharp solid iron ring Gurjit was wearing. “It is a weapon.” Gurjit said. “Look, you can take it off and hold it in your fist when you hit someone. Going from Pakistan to India is probably the only exciting border crossing in the world. It’s called the Wagah Border. Pakistani and Indian soldiers are dressed up with feathers on their head. The shout to each other, then start drumming and see who can lift his leg up highest while marching. It’s a funny cockfight with a big gate between the two parties. The difference between Pakistan and India becomes very clear: India is crowded and people are dressed in bright colours, the Pakistani border is rather quiet and the people are dressed in modest colours. Being on the other side of the fence I feel like I’m a traitor. I loved Pakistan and now everybody is hating on the Pakis. It is kind of a joke, but during my time in India many people cursed the Pakistanis for being terrorists and extremists. Akifa, an interesting Pakistani film maker, took me to a wedding. Fully dressed in shalwar kameez I looked genuinely like a Pathan, a group that comes from a border region with Afghanistan. I have had that before: people talked Pashtun/Urdu to me. One thing that catches my eye in everyday Pakistani street life is the abundance of transvestites. They are not illegal, but they are also not really accepted (as you might expect in an Islamic republic.) Their story is sad and intriguing and too long to explain here. Before I knew it, I ended up at a transgender festival in a small village two hours out of Lahore. First watching a mud, wrestling game, then pray in the mosque, then watch snake charmers and witch doctors. Finally go backstage and dance with transgenders. I am staying in the only backpacker hotel in Pakistan, The Lahore Backpackers. It is like any other hostel, but instead of a pub crawl there is tour to a Sufi rave night where men are playing drums and spin around or make other psytrance dance moves. The place is packed. Men around me are rolling, smoking and passing joints. Some men are throwing candy in the crowd. At the end of the night you get stoned by just breathing. There is still plenty of room at the top. Also a free travel tip: survive without money, it brings you further than your hotel room. The next morning my financial situation is still not solved. I am going to the bus station for free wifi to call my bank. I get into a conversation twenty something guy and I explain my situation: “no one should be I such trouble in my country!!” He gives me his phone number and puts me in a rickshaw that will drive me to a hotel. The hotel can't accept me, but they can make me a big meal and a coffee. My bank will wire me money but because it's a public holiday it will take at least one day before I can teach it. I call the guy from the bus station and explain the situation. ‘This is terrible!’ He cries out. ‘Give your phone to someone on the street.’ I see three young boys and give my phone to the tallest, gesturing him like there is a call for him. He is confused but then nods and smiles and nods. He waves me over and the three of them guide me through small alleys and crowded markets to find me a hotel that will accept my situation. Most hotels don't have permits to host international guests due to terrorist danger so I end up in a shady hotel that doesn't mind and charges me too much (I'll pay next day). At four in the morning there is a knock on my door. It's guy from the bus station: ‘I finished work and this is pretty close compared to my house.’ ‘Of course you can sleep here’ I tell him. You saved the day. The next day I got more money trouble. the western union office doesn't accept my Situation. Muhammad, a guy also at the office, senses my frustration and offers to help me. He takes me on his motorbike to another western union office at the other side of town, “Did you ever taste the best ice cream in the world?” We take a little detour before solving my futile money problem.
