I have to deal with you and my feelings about you.
Hannibal (2013-2015)
“[Will's] so bratty in this scene. There was a whole series of bratty things I did that never made it. I certainly remember when Hannibal says it's a very Nietzschean fish, I looked at him like, 'You prick.'”
-Hugh Dancy (Su-zakana audio commentary)
Happy 13th anniversary to Hannibal
Some joke about it, some genuinely believe that Hugh Dancy is a Hannigram denier, but I felt the need to have my quick two cents on the topic. Just to yap and maybe beat a dead horse at this point. Perhaps someone will agree with my reasoning. The mistake is to reduce the word platonic to a regular friendship, something unimportant. That's a modern usage of the concept, but talking about Hugh, he clearly stated on multiple occasions "The show is about love and it is about romance between the two of them" ; "It's not just two guys who are friends, you know? It's a rich deep love" Hugh just didn't feel it was sexual at the time. And it wasn't. Or, at least, any sexual desire was repressed / not a big part of their dynamic, leaving space to possession, obsession and intellectual attraction of a different kind. That's what made Hannibal and Will so special to me in the first place. And I'm not reducing any sexual aspect of it as well. If it was metaphorical before, after the fall it becomes physical. Bryan made sure to tease us with that. One could argue about the true meaning of ✨platonic✨ but it's absolutely can be seen as romantic. Even more than that, devine. Greeks were especially considerate of love between same-sex couples just so they don't have to call it gay.
I think it is interesting to know that Hugh Dancy's father is quite important philosopher in the United Kingdom and it happened at least once that Hugh explained to someone his father's theory; at the party so that someone could use it in their series. Isn't crazy?
I think a lot of people misunderstand the concept of platonic love; however, in this case, they truly shouldn't sleep on that.
Didn't Hugh some time later clarified that he meant “platonic love” in Plato's conception? Which would mean... two bodies that were once one (with two sets of arms and legs), but were separated and now they have to find each other in the world in order to be and feel completed again.
Isn't it about love itself? It is! I would even argue, it is in its purest form — that someone completes you so fully that it feels as if you were one long time ago. But it doesn't cross out anything sexual.
I can totally get Hugh's feelings about hannigram at that point of time. Especially given that according to the creators they didn't even realised they were creating a romance until the third season. Both Hugh and Mads understood however that Will and Hannibal complete each other and they see themselves in each other.
Sorry for rambling under your post op, but it reminded me of this insane Hugh Dancy's lore and I just went on. Sorry. 😭
