At last, The Bodyguard AU story is complete (?), so I'm finally able to share the correct timeline as promised! But before that really quick, let me shout out to @goldenlionprince and @neverenoughmarauders, who hopped onto this insane bandwagon I created by accident, based on @lovelymasks' top tier fanfic 'Kiss me tonight', beta'd by @diamondmeadow. When I posted the first picture, I had no idea that this AU will consume my life so quickly and turn into this incredibly fulfilling Fandom Experience™. The creative process and co-creation opportunity could boost my already higher than average productivity art-wise, the sheer amount of (sometimes quite complex and even challenging) artwork I made in such a short period of time blows even my mind (overall 69 pieces published in almost exactly 3 months)... Just to put the volume into perspective, I was almost not able to share this masterpost, because we reached the 100 links limit! The AO3 links for the ficlets had to be removed, so if you want to read them there instead, here are the links for the AO3 collections of Lina / goldenlionprince & Caz / neverenoughmarauders. And also a link to the version where everything is copied together in the right order with all the (uncensored) pictures embedded! ~40K words, 165 pages.
So without further ado, let me present you the timeline with all the links and the backstory and/or off-screen story bits included! Beware, it is an extremely long post, so I put it under a readmore! Enjoy!
Timeline:
PART I: Introduction
BACKSTORY: James is an IT engineer, skilled in programming and cybersecurity. He works at his own company, designing, developing, assessing and pentesting the IT systems, encryption methods and cybersecurity measures of his clients. He is the only son of well respected diplomats, he spent his childhood living abroad. As his parents were stationed in hostile countries as well, James is used to having bodyguards around, however he despised being watched constantly. He made a habit of slipping out of sight of his bodyguards to the point that nobody is willing to work for him anymore, which made it quite a challenge to find someone who could protect him.
Sirius is a freelance bodyguard. His clientele consisted mostly of wealthy businessmen, who hired him to protect their wives and daughters. He’s quite popular and successful in this profession: due to his military years he is very effective at keeping anyone safe, while his clients trusted him to stay professional despite the ladies enjoying the constant company of such a handsome man. Sirius could easily resist the advances of his lady clients, because he is gay. He was a little reluctant to accept James as his next client at first, but decided to take up on the challenge.

PART II: Getting to know each other

BACKSTORY: Sirius graduated from a military academy and joined the forces right away. He has spent his twenties in the military. As he’s a very talented soldier with a versatile set of skills, he could climb the ranks quite quickly. He was eventually selected to be a member of a top secret international operation called “Operation Fawkes”, the details of their missions are classified. When his last mission went south, he had to leave the forces and burn his identity completely. Remus helped him to set up his new identity - Stubby Boardman.

BACKSTORY: The pattern Sirius did at the shooting practice is his signature move - a bullet to the heart to kill, and shots to both eyes and the middle of the head to make the face of the victim unrecognizable, making it look chewed off. This technique earned him the nickname “the Grim / the omen of death”.
PART III: Adventures together

OFF-SCREEN STORY: One of James’ new clients (Igor Karkaroff) seems to be hiding something nasty, so James keeps hacking deeper into their systems and servers. He discovers a connection to the Death Eaters and proof for some more highly illegal activities. He refuses to do more work for Karkaroff and gives him an ultimatum to go to the police willingly or James will. Karkaroff decides to plan an attack on James in a restaurant instead.

Ficlet: Guard dog - link
OFF-SCREEN STORY: After Karkaroff’s attack fails, he attempts to shoot James before fleeing the scene, but misses. The bullet ends up hitting Sirius’ butt.
Karkaroff is killed by the Death Eaters because their orders were clear - they need to capture James alive, and Karkaroff jeopardized this with his actions.

OFF-SCREEN STORY: Following Sirius’ surprisingly quick recovery from his injuries, they implement additional safety measures: Sirius basically moves in with James and a new, fingerprint based lock system is installed to his apartment’s door. The new lock system is called ‘Fidelius’, which is used by the government / homeland security / ministry of defence.
BACKSTORY: Sirius has problems with sleeping in general. He was trained to endure torture, which also contained sleep deprivation. To be able to provide 24/7 service as a bodyguard, he developed a crazy weekly sleep schedule: he sleeps 2 hours after every 6 hours, which splits his day into 3 equal sections. He follows this routine for 3-4 days, then increases the sleeping hours to 4 hours after every 8 hours, splitting his day into 2 equal sections. He follows this routine for another 2 days, then on his day off he sleeps 8 hours after 16 hours. He always makes sure to mix up the routine from time to time to ensure his off-duty hours are unpredictable.

BACKSTORY: James’ parents were diplomats, who got brutally murdered by burglars when they broke into the embassy building. They stole mostly electronics: computers, phones and emptied the server room. The burglars - Macnair, Greyback and the Carrows - were later identified as members and affiliates of the terrorist organisation ‘Death Eaters’.
8) Ficlet: Asking or begging - link
OFF-SCREEN STORY: James doesn’t want to feel depressed and miserable, so he convinces Sirius to let him go out and have some fun in a gay bar. Sirius is rather unhappy about the whole situation, because:
- it is hard to pay attention and work properly in a crowded club;
- he is still a little angry at James for slipping through his fingers and going to the cemetery on his own, proving that there can be a security breach;
- gay bars make him uncomfortable because all the attention he’d definitely get is mostly unwanted on his end;
- James keeps sending him very mixed signals: he asks Sirius to pretend they are together, one moment proudly announcing how head over heels he is with his tall, dark and handsome boyfriend, then joining someone else on the dance floor the other.

BACKSTORY: Evan Rosier Jr. is the problematic son of Evan Rosier Sr., a so-called entrepreneur who got rich by having mostly illegal businesses which may or may not be connected to Voldemort. Rosier Jr. desperately wants to join the Death Eaters, and the perfect opportunity to prove himself worthy presents itself when he notices James dancing in a gay bar, seemingly alone.
OFF-SCREEN STORY: Rosier Jr. picks James up, starts to flirt with him and invites him to somewhere more comfortable. James agrees to go with him, assuming he only meant a private room of the club. Rosier Jr. however leads him to his car. James tries to get away by mentioning his crazy jealous and scary protective boyfriend, but Rosier Jr. only laughs at him and demands James to call his boyfriend. James calls Sirius, and while Rosier Jr. speaks with him, James activates a tracker on Evan’s phone and forwards it to Sirius. They end up in an abandoned warehouse building, where some of Rosier’s allies join them. James tries to gain more time by flirting with Rosier Jr., who high on party drugs falls for the act completely, temporarily forgetting his overarching plan of handing James over to the Death Eaters in exchange for a membership. The furious Sirius soon arrives to save the day.

OFF-SCREEN STORY: James is admitted to the hospital to have a knee surgery, while Sirius in the meantime returns to the warehouse to get rid of any evidence pointing at him by burning down the building.

OFF-SCREEN STORY: After the Charity Gala Sirius suspects that James got drugged, so he checks all the footage from the night with Remus, they have the following discoveries:
- Sirius recognizes Snape among the guests;
- James is really just a lightweight and indeed was not drugged.
BACKSTORY: Sirius and Snape both were part of “Operation Fawkes”, among the top highest performing soldiers. Their rivalry was further deepened by their clashing personalities and fundamental differences in their approach and methods, as Sirius is best at close-combat and Snape is a bomb expert.

BACKSTORY: Remus and Sirius joined the army after they graduated, and even though they were assigned to different squads due to their different strengths, they kept in contact and maintained their friendship (sometimes with benefits) / relationship (mostly on-and-off). They became exclusive when they were both selected for “Operation Fawkes” as due to the top secret nature of the operation, the members were not allowed to leave the base outside of missions and all phone calls were supervised. Remus missed his home and family (he hasn't seen them in years!), and tried to find an excuse to quit, especially upon witnessing how Sirius got more and more immersed in the violence of the missions, becoming less and less able to fully separate “the Grim” and the military from his IRL identity. Sirius had already cut all his ties with his family, so he channeled all his emotional needs to his relationship with Remus. As the operation team was not allowed to leave the base, if Remus wanted out, they would have had to become long-distance - and Sirius was too hyper-fixated on the missions and being with Remus to even consider it, while Remus avoided the topic to save Sirius' feelings. These cracks in their romance blew up completely, when Remus got hurt by being too close to an explosion, and Sirius went on a brutal rampage to “avenge” his lover. This was the last straw for Remus, who finally decided to leave the forces, and advised the same to Sirius, who however, was not ready to leave the military yet, and thought that Remus was a coward for not continuing to fight. They had a nasty fight about it, which ultimately ended their relationship as well. Remus travelled back to the UK to heal, accepting a job offer from the Ministry of Defence as an intelligence officer. Sirius interpreted Remus leaving even without him as betrayal. The loss of his only “familial” tie left made him even more violent and reckless. Remus managed to build a more or less fulfilling civil life for himself, he settled down and got married. He hasn’t seen or even heard of Sirius for years, until he called him out of the blue to ask for his help.

BACKSTORY: The ‘Philosopher's S.T.o.N.E.’ is the umbrella term to describe a complex collection of data containing classified information about each country. Grindelwald & Dumbledore, both famous scholars, came up with the creation of the S.T.o.N.E. (Security Treaty of Nationwide Equilibrium). Dumbledore, elected as the UN Secretary-General, managed to convince the representatives of each country to cooperate and share their best kept secrets, for the greater good. The S.T.o.N.E. proved to be successful in keeping world peace, as it created an artificial and delicate status quo between the countries. To ensure that the S.T.o.N.E. is safe, it is physically transferred every 3 months between top secret military bases around the world. The location the S.T.o.N.E. will be next stored at is decided by an algorithm called ‘the Prophecy’. The algorithm randomly assigns the locations and the transfer routes, making it impossible to plan a successful raid or attack. The ‘Prophecy’ was written by McGonagall. The code was (partially) hosted on the servers in the embassy building the Potters were stationed at.

OFF-SCREEN STORY: James decides to stay home in radio silence to have a sex marathon with Sirius. However, he should have signed some documents in person. As nobody can reach him, Peter decides to visit him at home. Sirius notices that an intruder is at the door, and quickly prepares to ambush him with a knife.

OFF-SCREEN STORY: After the ambush, following James’ orders Sirius leaves the quite traumatized Peter alone with James in the living room. While he dresses up, it hits him that he’s getting a little too possessive of James, someone who he should have stayed professional with in the first place. When the paperwork is dealt with and Peter leaves, Sirius - still struggling a bit to conceal “the Grim” part of himself again after he let a glimpse of it slip when he attacked Peter - picks a fight with James. He is angry at James for not telling him that Peter also has access to the Fidelius lock, a potential security breach. James manages to calm Sirius down a bit by inviting him to lunch.
Meanwhile Peter tells the Death Eaters that James and Sirius are intimate, and they use this information to come up with a plan.

BACKSTORY: Sirius and Remus joined the secret operation together, which was the first time for them to stay at the same base for a long period of time since their years at the military academy. This resulted in them becoming exclusive with each other, after having years of long-distance and on-and-off, friends with benefits sort of relationship prior. Snape started to learn programming as a desperate attempt at distracting himself after ‘the Prank’ (he caught Sirius and Remus shagging in the common room area of the military base they were stationed at).

BACKSTORY: “Operation Fawkes” was a complex military operation led by Dumbledore, related to the safety of the “Philosopher’s S.T.o.N.E.”. The objective of the operation was to establish the military bases for storing the S.T.o.N.E. and the potential transfer routes. Each mission required the precise execution of several complex military operations, such as reconnaissance, mapping, planning, clearing the territory, locating and eliminating targets and other undesirable personnel. The details and the true purpose of the missions and the whole operation were not shared with the squad members, they were told that they were fighting against terrorists. In reality, the local people responsible for building the military bases were executed. Once all the locations were secured, the squads were also eliminated (by each other’s hands mostly), leaving Dumbledore as the only person to know the full story and the details of the S.T.o.N.E.'s locations. The last two squads left were Snape’s and Sirius’. As Sirius’ behaviour got more violent after his breakup with Remus (a feral wild dog off the leash), it was no longer a question for Dumbledore which one of the two highest performers to choose to spare and use as a spy later. Sirius was tasked to kill Snape’s squad because “there’s a mole”, while Snape killed Sirius’ unit with a bomb. During their inevitable confrontation, Snape taunted Sirius with the truth behind “Operation Fawkes”, which made Sirius realize that he’s a loose end, Dumbledore chose Snape to spare. Sirius attempted to kill Snape anyway, but failed to do so as Snape had set off multiple explosives. Sirius used the chaos, smoke and debris to disappear. He was smuggled back to the UK by Mundungus. Sirius then called Remus, who helped him to burn his identity and set him up with a new one.

OFF-SCREEN STORY: Peter tells Sirius and Remus that the Death Eaters’ original plan was to use James to motivate McGonagall to do the ‘Prophecy’ code modification for them. Sirius then immediately jumps to the conclusion that James is tortured and possibly already dead. Sirius rushes to the location thinking that he is too late, so he massacres the whole band of bad guys who are sent in his way. The clatter of this disturbs Voldemort, Snape and the two Death Eaters in the server room.

BACKSTORY: Sirius and Snape were the only two members of “Operation Fawkes” who remained involved from the very first moment to the final hour, over the course of seven grueling years. Sirius was given a mission to eliminate Snape and his team after a traitor was suspected among them. What he didn’t anticipate, however, was that Snape had received a similar order, and was willing to sacrifice his own team to fulfill it. He had rigged the base with explosives, leaving the soldiers with no chance of survival. Sirius only narrowly escaped the blast because he had positioned himself far enough away, having intentionally separated from his team to hunt down Snape. Snape had anticipated this, though, and chose a more advantageous position for himself. Knowing he couldn’t match Sirius in close combat, he used grenades to keep him at a distance. His plan worked: Sirius quickly ran out of ammunition and couldn’t get close. Worse, one of the grenades exploded near him, injuring his leg badly. During “Operation Fawkes,” they had mapped out various routes, secret tunnels, and hidden passages. It was during one of these reconnaissance missions that Sirius stumbled upon a tunnel leading to a small cave, which was used by a local drug and alcohol smuggler. Sirius befriended him, and the smuggler, eager to help, offered him supplies. Sirius, knowing that reporting this discovery would force him to kill the man, decided to keep it a secret. The entrance to the secret tunnel was close to the site of his battle with Snape. Realizing he couldn’t defeat him, Sirius came up with a plan to escape. He baited Snape into continuing his grenade assault on his position, hoping the ensuing dust and debris would provide cover for him to slip away into the hidden tunnel. Snape eventually realized he had been outwitted, but by the time he tried to follow, the tunnel entrance had been blocked by the rubble caused by his own bombs. Injured and desperate, Sirius limped through the passageway, his leg throbbing with pain, until he reached Mundungus’s warehouse. There, he used the alcohol he found to disinfect his wounds and numb his pain. He prepared a makeshift splint for his leg from his gun. He waited in the cave for two days until Mundungus showed up and helped him escape the country.

OFF-SCREEN STORY: Dumbledore, upon learning about what happened in the warehouse, proceeds to cover it up as much as he can. Sirius and James are instructed to stay in Sirius’ apartment until further notice. Remus manages to grab some of James’ belongings - including his laptop - from his flat, which is investigated as a crime scene. In the meantime McGonagall fixes and enhances the “Prophecy” code, incorporating James’ tracker in it, so whenever the code is used, it automatically sends location log files to the Ministry of Defense, who starts planning an ambush of the Death Eaters.

I've started a new fic series!
Well...the day finally came. My boyfriend discovered I read fanfic. Apparently reading on my kindle was not as secretive as I thought. He caught me reading Sweater Weather by LumosinLove so we've started calling it Hockey (obvi). Every time I'm reading he'll ask me "so what are they doing this time?" and has started to give the most unhinged fics. So, like any good girlfriend, I'm exploiting his creativity and have asked him for fic prompts!
