“My love for real estate and business made my vision possible,” said first generation Salvadorian, Heber Jobany Martinez . Heber was born and raised in Wilmington and remains a Wilmington resident and entrepreneur. He invested in Wilmington in 2016 and opened up his own Mexican taco shop called “Quiero Más Tacos. “ “I was always surrounded by the Mexican culture, I even married a Mexican native from Michoacan (Mexico)." His mother in-law’s authentic homemade cooking inspired the menu. “I believe Wilmington has a lot of great people that come out of here, I don’t know anything else but Wilmington.” His love for Wilmington made him seek success as a restaurant owner. “Putting up a business is risky, I have a family, I have a mortgage and bills to pay. I’m willing to take this risk because I want to hand my kid a job. I’m a first generation Salvadorian here in the United States. My parents came from El Salvador and like many of us, they they came here for a better future. They got a job and they did what they had to do in order to survive. I don’t want to do the same for my kids, I don’t just want to work all the time and not have time for them." “My mom would get up very early. She was disciplined & very meticulous. She started working at the canneries when she was 16 & worked her way up. I remember seeing the newspaper clipping about her retiring after 50 years. I remember going to this cannery. It smelt so bad because it’s a cannery. It doesn’t smell good. That shows dedication. The thing I remember that made me very proud...when my mom walked into this cannery there were 300 women at tables. You know when you see the president walking into a room, it was kind of like that feeling. All of the women had these big knives that they were cleaning the fish with. And when my mom came into the room they started hitting the knives under the table like a salute.” Story from son of Lucie Villalva Ponce Garcia. Lucie was born in 1927 and worked at Pan Pacific Tuna for 50 years where she supervised 300 cannery workers. Post WWII tuna canning in the LA harbor was the largest in the world & the canneries employed thousands of Wilmington workers. In the 80s-90s large canneries started to shut down & move abroad leading to massive job loss in the region. "I was about 8 or 9 I think when I started learning how to speak Caló. That is what they call Pachuco language —Caloismo. They had their own language because the police were always giving them a bad time. You see, the police were always trying to prevent them from speaking Spanish so Caloismo started with Pachucos like in the 40s. Can you imagine? You know that was their identity. It started in east LA. I was in San Fernando and my cousins that were older than I was, that was all they spoke. But I learned it shining shoes and it was a good thing it payed off for me 10 years later. Sure enough when I got into doing therapy I ran into a lot of people who speak Caló. So I was really thankful. When I started to work for the city I had a lot of Pachucos coming in and they wouldn’t speak to me if I didn’t understand Caló. “Ése vato loco ése” and that is the way they would speak when they wanted to commit suicide. If I didn’t speak Caló, he wouldn’t have opened up about nothing but if I say, “Carnal como ta carnal ongale pues” then they open up and I can get them in treatment. I really liked that job, that was a good job. It’s beautiful stuff, let me tell you. It’s great to learn different languages, different dialects. It's beautiful stuff but it’s gotten away from me. Of course I lost it because I have nobody to speak to. Sometimes I run into people in their 80s and 90s and they still speak Caló. It's a beautiful thing." The California Environmental Protection Agency and Governor’s Office of Emergency Services are hosting a public meeting TONIGHT to get community input on the proposed changes to the current regulations. Help pass SB 1000 today! This important piece of legislation will directly benefit Wilmington and other communities affected by pollution and low resources in California. The Assembly Floor vote could happen today or tomorrow. If you have a few minutes to spare, please call today! Assemblymember Mike Gipson: (916) 319-2064 (South LA) Sample script: Hello my name is _________ from Wilmington and I’m calling today to urge Assemblymember Gibson to vote YES on SB 1000 when it reaches the Assembly floor this week. SB 1000 will require cities and counties to have environmental justice goals and policies in their land use plans. In Wilmington we see the direct negative effects of pollution in our community and SB 1000 is important to addressing these environmental inequities.
