"I was about 8 or 9 I think when I started learning how to speak Caló. That is what they call Pachuco language —Caloismo. They had their own language because the police were always giving them a bad time. You see, the police were always trying to prevent them from speaking Spanish so Caloismo started with Pachucos like in the 40s. Can you imagine? You know that was their identity. It started in east LA. I was in San Fernando and my cousins that were older than I was, that was all they spoke. But I learned it shining shoes and it was a good thing it payed off for me 10 years later. Sure enough when I got into doing therapy I ran into a lot of people who speak Caló. So I was really thankful. When I started to work for the city I had a lot of Pachucos coming in and they wouldn’t speak to me if I didn’t understand Caló. “Ése vato loco ése” and that is the way they would speak when they wanted to commit suicide. If I didn’t speak Caló, he wouldn’t have opened up about nothing but if I say, “Carnal como ta carnal ongale pues” then they open up and I can get them in treatment. I really liked that job, that was a good job. It’s beautiful stuff, let me tell you. It’s great to learn different languages, different dialects. It's beautiful stuff but it’s gotten away from me. Of course I lost it because I have nobody to speak to. Sometimes I run into people in their 80s and 90s and they still speak Caló. It's a beautiful thing."
