having thoughts

(until now) it always bothered me that dean doesn't say anything to comfort Sam in the final scene of the pilot. sam is obviously distraught. dean just gapes at him like that. no "I'm sorry about your girlfriend" or "are you okay?" just stares at him. doesn't even try to find any words. just stares. and I was like dude, come on, that's your brother and his gf just died, freakin say something. and I even considered that it might've been an acting thing and maybe jensen just didn't know who dean was as a character yet but then I remembered that it's jensen ackles.

didn't even consider the possibility that he was in shock. dean just saved his baby brother from a house fire for the second time in his life. the same way he saved him as a 4 year old in the house fire that killed his mother/his mother's body was left in. that's something most people don't experience even once in a lifetime, much less at the age of FOUR. and it just happened AGAIN 22 years later!!! in this context? LOOK AT HIM! he is in awe that sam is even alive. he looks spaced out. he's probably re-living flashbacks to the night his mom died.
