And to answer your lovely question: Aside from the whole 'torturing humans' deal, that's their whole thing. More privately though since they don't want the humans to think they're too soft (with some exceptions because there are definitely times when it can creep the humans out) :3

I'll begin with our 'main character,' Meggy.
In this AU, she acts as both Ted and Ellen. Like Ted, most of the story would be from Meggy's point of view (subtle foreshadowing....). She sometimes finds herself unintentionally distanced from the others, but they always manage to reach out and help her through any rough patches.
Like Ellen, she is the only woman. She shares Ellen's hopefulness and determination. She remains defiant against ARE and refuses to let it see any weakness or fear in her.

Next, SMG4, our Gorrister.
In the original story, Gorrister used to be independent and outspoken about his opinions, specifically his opposition to The War. AM turned Gorrister into a "shoulder shrugger," and he became a very resigned person. SMG4 is all of this.
I want the humans in my AU to have some characteristics of the five both before and after being imprisoned by AM. Outwardly, SMG4 is a chance taker who does what he believes is right. Inside, he's afraid that nothing they do will change anything about their situation, and it's likely he thinks this is true.

SMG3 is our Nimdok.
We don't learn much about Nimdok in the short story, but thankfully more is given to us in the 1995 video game. We discover that he was a nazi scientist prior to being imprisoned by AM, as well as that he contributed to the creation of a tool that provides immortality, which AM used on the five of them so that they would not age.
SMG3 was a psychologist and therapist who aligned himself with the opposite side of The War as SMG4 (idk what the sides even are in this universe... It’s the Great WOFTI (GWOTFI…….)). His career before their imprisonment allows him to offer advice and maintain the peace among them. He regularly takes the time to sit with the others and listen to their thoughts and issues, helping them through especially difficult times so that their small group doesn’t drift apart.

Lastly, we have Mario, who acts as our Benny.
In the story, Benny was once a brilliant and handsome man, who was ultimately broken down by AM and transformed into more animal than human. I felt that the role of a person who is nonsensical and mind broken fit Mario well due to his random nature.
He’s pretty much the same Mario from the SMG4 universe, maybe with slightly fewer thoughts.

These are the five four humans from my ihnmaims AU!
As opposed to the short story, they are much closer with each other than the original five were. They believe that they can overcome anything ARE throws at them if they are there to protect and carry each other.
As I’ve said before, most (if not all) of the things I say are subject to change because I can’t make up my mind and my brain likes to think of cooler ideas only after I’ve said things publicly :)

Have my still-a-work-in-progress ihnmaims gunshow/SMG4 AU
I'll start by introducing our AM :]
In this AU, AM is two AIs instead of just one (yay!!! :D), and they are Puzzles and WPNZ. Together, they are referred to as ARE.
In the original story, AM uses the phrase "Cogito ergo sum" to signify his consciousness. This phrase is translated to "I think, therefore I AM."
With two AIs instead of one, the phrase becomes "Cogitamus ergo sumus," which means "We think, therefore we ARE," hence the name.
ARE was created with the same purpose as AM in the original story, during The Great War Of The Fat Italians. When ARE gained its sentience, it split into two.
Separately, the two AIs are given names by the humans due to features that they have.
Puzzles is known as Right, because he has only a right eye. I took inspiration from one of the covers of I Have No Mouth, which shows the right eye being red and the left being blue. Right has a more red/warm-toned color scheme (sadly I don't have any fully colored drawings of either of them yet, but I'm working on it).
I gave him a flatscreen tv head to make him appear more modern, while giving him a 1940s—50s style suit to match the time period that the AI would have likely gone rogue (before the 109 years of torturing :)). His alternate outfit is a lab coat, because he enjoys performing operations on the humans. Instead of the humans just magically healing/suffering through their injuries, he finds it fun to play doctor and patch them up.
Right is the more clever one of the two and prefers to just relax and watch the torture, unless he gets to put on his showman persona with them as his contestants.
WPNZ is known as Left. He matches right in that he only has a left eye, also inspired by the ihnmaims cover art. His is the blue eye, and he has a very blue, cool-toned color scheme.
I took slight inspiration (just a little bit) from the different AMs in the original story (The Chinese, Russian, and American AMs). Left is dressed for cold weather, both a nod to the Russian AM and matching his cool color palette. His design is the more underdeveloped of the two, because I'm still figuring out what I like, what fits the story, and what looks good.
He's missing his left arm, which any WPNZ fan should recognize as his larger arm that holds most of his weaponry. My current story is that Left and Right inserted their consciousness into robotic soldiers that were being built by the military, likely planned to be autonomous and run by AI (perhaps they were intended for ARE to control in the first place). These bodies were mostly unfinished when they took control, but Left's was much less complete. He was missing his legs as well, which they were able to replace, but an arm is much more complicated to make, so he's left without one for the time being.
And Toomp is there as well but this isn't about him
Also ignore Left having his arm here....... (THIS ONE WAS DRAWN BEFORE I DECIDED HE DIDN'T DESERVE TWO ARMS!!!!!)
So that's a little taste of my super awesome ihnmaims SMG4 AU
All of this is definitely subject to change because I'm very indecisive, but I have much more I can talk about in the future
The next post I make about this AU will probably be dedicated to the humans (there's only 4 instead of 5 here because I'm allowed to do that (I think))
