Our Hideaway

There was a sort of nervous energy that Kanata could feel, settled upon his skin like a film of some kind. It made him hyperaware of the sound of the clubroom door opening and its subsequent closing. Of the sound of footsteps getting closer, a second voice harmonizing with the melody he had been creating.
“Ka~o~ru~”, Kanata singsonged back, drawing his arm out of the water after the second fish had swum out of his grasp, delicate fins brushing past his skin. Using the hand towel he had put over the edge of the tank to wipe off the excess water, he was trying to not leave the floors dripping wet as he used to, Kanata half-turned away from the tank so that he wasn’t blocking the view of their new fish from Kaoru.
It was always something to see Kaoru lit by the glow of the lamps in tanks. He had a… soft feel. Though Kanata supposed Kaoru in general did have a much softer feel to him than when they had first met. The draw towards the blonde that Kanata had felt had not changed much in contrast.
“It was a [surprise] so I could not [ask] Kaoru for help~”
He had chosen a pair of veil angelfish for this tank, the long fins beautiful as the fish swam around their new home. One had a more blueish tint to its scales, of the blue ghost breed, and the other was of the platinum family, though where it might’ve had black stripes its coloration was gold instead.
“These are a [present]~ For Kaoru~”
❝A surprise for lil ole me~? Kanata, you shouldn’t have!❞ his tone is cheery and he can’t help but to laugh along with his words.
Truly, he’s caught off guard by this, feels his cheeks warming in embarrassment as it’s not every day a guy presents him with a gift. Girls usually do to vie for his attention, but for Kanata to do this? It’s out of the ordinary, and brings with it a sensation that’s quite foreign to him. His heart flutters about in his chest, and genuine curiosity tugs at him or what should have been an obligation to act thankful for someone thinking of him at all. It scares him, how good it makes him feel to know Kanata spends any time thinking about him or doing anything for him at all. He doesn’t have to.... no one does. And yet.
❝Ah~, so you got a pair of angelfish, huh?❞ he strays closer to the tank, features soft against the light that reflects back onto him. He lifts a hand, fingers gently gliding along the glass’ surface to get a better look at them. ❝Hey~, if I didn’t know any better this one looks an awful lot like you and the other... oh~ this is supposed to resemble me, right~? ♪❞ It’s easy to figure out; however, the why of it doesn’t quiet settle in, not until Kanata’s words resound within his mind.
A present for him. He goes still, golden eyes watching the two fish familiarize themselves with their new home. This must have taken Kanata a long time to arrange. It’s very thoughtful and is as special as the rare pair of fish that flit about the tank. He realizes then there must be a hidden message in all this. Kanata always has his way with his cryptic speaking and with every action of the former God’s holding clues of their own, he can’t help but speculate on all this.
❝Hey~, Ka~na~ta? ❞ He can’t look at him yet, features flushed and nerves slowly bubbling up over his usually friendly exterior. ❝What’re their names?❞ Finally, he tears his gaze away from the tank to take Kanata in.
His stomach twists and turns about in knots, and finally it dawns on him. Kanata isn’t just showing him a pair of fish he happened to find that resembled them. No, these fish...
❝You got them for me, right? I’d like to hear your ideas, you know~?❞ he tries to keep himself composed on the outside, but Kaoru knows how attuned Kanata is to his emotions. ❝This special present for me won’t be complete without it, you know!❞
