Jane turns and throws the clock against the wall and it shatters on impact. Quentin watches it fall. He remember’s Alice’s horse, galloping off the edge of the desk and splintering as it met the floor. Maybe his Discipline is watching things break.

the sky was blue. when i thought i’d never be able to fly in that sky again, i was sad, yet happy.

mayu-shiraki:
Mayuko nodded a little, maybe she thought this way because she had been a bit of a daydreamer or had been once. She didn’t consider herself to be much of one now or even much before, it was all hopes she had, really. Wishes. And there was nothing wrong those either.
“It’s nothing, I was saying how you seem a whole lot happier than you did when I first met you.”
❛ Ah -- is that so? ❜ He’s smiling -- even when it dims a little under the weight of thoughtfulness and his gaze flickers across an inexplicable distance. But it’s fleeting; after only the span of a second he’s entirely present again, leaning in with a sort of sunny energy that he doesn’t seem to be doing much to stifle.
❛ That’s a very interesting observation. ❜ It is, and if there is something he lives by, now more than ever, it is honesty. He doesn’t attempt to qualify the remark, doesn’t appear to see anything odd about it in the first place. His voice flutters with cheer and something close to excitement.
❛ I would say you do as well. Though I don’t know if it’s only because I’m seeing things very differently than I used to. ❜
emperorjade:
“ No, ” she mumbles, hands tracing his back. “ No, I don’t want him. Just … stay. ”
She wanted Kureno. More specifically, she wanted to be closer to him.
No matter how close their bodies were, how long a touch lasted, how forceful, how intense their collision, she could always feel the rift, a divide, a layer of cotton and paper that kept him from her. There were times they could be lying next to each other, and Akito still felt an ocean between them.
An ocean that they were both drowning in.
How did the outside world survive this? How could they function in relationships with this terrible, cruel separation?
The day Kureno’s curse broke, Akito’s scream was so terrible the servants had come running with emergency medical supplies. With no apparent cause for her anguish, they had assumed it was a fit; she bolted, bare feet skidding on the tatami.
It felt as though he had died. It had taken her some moments, once she saw him standing alive and well, to register what had truly happened.
Nothing could ever replace that broken bond. She knew that now. She could crawl into his mouth, swim in his blood, and it would never be enough, never come close to a fraction of what that cursed bond had been to her. No physical touch could compare, although that didn’t mean she would ever stop trying.
Like now, nestled into his chest, feeling his heart beat. She leans into his touch like a cat as he strokes her hair, and moves up to kiss him. “ Don’t go. ”
❛ Alright. ❜
He doesn’t expect anything different. It’s not so uncommon, for her to crave or eschew any presence and he doesn’t startle for it. What he does instead is watch her closely -- looks entirely past her words and keeps a sharp, clinical eye on how she is. As frequently as pains and illnesses come, each one is something he worries over with extra care.
He also doesn’t need to say something; this, at least, is something he thinks she knows. Maybe the trauma of that afternoon still rings in her bones in a way it does not in his -- maybe it rattles, rusted and poisonous, along the chains of her bond. But even in the face of that final, deep, shattering -- he has never been anywhere else. ( if he were in the habit of wanting anything, he might want her to know that. to feel safe in that knowledge. even if some voice in the back of his mind that feels almost as separate as the bird that used to perch with him whispers a warning at that.
-- but then, it’s moot. he’s not in the habit of wanting. )
As she presses close he continues his gentle ministrations, featherlight fingers ghosting through her hair, trailing against the length of her jaw. His expression remains as undisturbed and heavy eyed as it had, attention entirely focused on her.
When her lips dovetail with his, he responds in kind. She sets the pace and he follows, shifting so that the arms supporting her weight are soft and undemanding.
❛ I won’t. ❜ It’s plain and simple, but heavy with conviction: a fundamental truth, restated. Kureno draws a breath, then in what might be construed as impulsive if only by virtue of the rhythm of their relationship, he leans in and chastely presses his lips against the corner of her mouth.
“Stop lying.”
╳┊( questions & comments • accepting. ) ;
❛ I — ❜ The words still in the back of his throat, something tight fluttering closed around his ribs. He can’t really identify it; it’s sharp and bitter, almost like the imagined, acrid taste of rust. Sadness is more blunted, fear violent and cold. But this isn’t unfamiliar and that makes it – it’s — it’s —
He should know, shouldn’t he? The sensation of being so close to what he wants to say, what he knows he feels, but unable to bridge that last distance and grab onto it. What he wants to do is agree with Kyou; he wants to nod and learn and figure out how to take this as a lesson and do better. Be better.
But when he reaches out, he’s only brushing against darkness.
He glances down, eyelids shuttering for a moment, and feels heat lick up the length of his jaw – a flickering flame that catches him by surprise. And then he’s speaking again before he realizes that he’d ever intended to; his voice does not sound like his own.

But it’s fun to think of Akito having a soft-spot for Kureno and Arisa’s child and enjoys seeing them and Shiki together. And then elbowing Shigure in the gd ribs if he’s a dick to the child bc nO, STOP IT YOU IDIOT.
ahhh -- omg bless that mental image tho ?? lbr tho any child of kureno’s would never notice lowkey jabs. i’ve always pictured her as having kureno’s floaty kindness ( and his more bubbleheaded tendencies ) & arisa’s slightly more outgoing energy so it’s an interesting combination to have around. she’d also be so open w/ her affection & every time one of them talks to her she gets so invested
asa-sohma replied to your post: Don't know if you're keeping up with Furuba...
oh my god, i’ve been having this same thought as the anon since before fba
im cr yin g hasn’t everyone suffered enoug h
Don't know if you're keeping up with Furuba Another BUT HOLY SHIT I JUST HAD THE MOST HILARIOUS THOUGHT! Okay but what if Akito and Shigure's kid ever got romantically involved with Kureno's?? Like? Can you just IMAGINE the awkwardness and tension that would ensue? OH GOD I WOULD LOVE HEADCANONS ON THIS!
♪ hello darkness my old friend –
honestly their dynamic is already ❛ blithely smiling tension ❜ just – hatred that’s weirdly civil and always said with a vacant smile &. all i can picture is that one panel of kureno /nervously sweating while shigure is (◡‿◡ )
( it’s not like he’d ever be legitimately angry or upset, but he does always lowkey look like his soul has left his body every time he has to interact w/ him. arisa just sighs & paps his arm sympathetically.
❛ u survived, good job. ❜
❛ i have …. no idea ….. what ur talking about …. ❜
❛ okay. ❜
but he’ll never let that get in the way of his kid’s happiness okay, he’s going to give her the absolute world all the time, hands down. )
+ new year’s
↳ headcanons
Kureno has been an active participant, and not merely a guest, in four new year’s banquets. The first year of the rooster rolled around when he was seven, and both his incoming year and departing year performances went off without a hitch.
His first was performed with Ritsu, as the year of the Monkey ended. It was, as one would expect, clumsy but sweet, given their young ages. During this time, Ritsu was Kureno’s closest companion within the house and it was their closeness that allowed Kureno to shake the anxiety of being in the spotlight for the first time.
Wait question: You say you think Kureno probably was aware of Shigure's feelings for Akito but did Shigure even tell anyone? Kureno doesn't seem like the type to pick up on things instinctively (since he's kinda airheaded) But I can't really see Shigure going around telling even his friends about his feelings? Like what age did he even realize he loved Akito? When would Kureno have found out?
ahhh – to clarify, Kureno likely only had an inkling. i try to portray a fairly nuanced version of his character – not blameless, but also not fully in a position where he had the freedom to make real choices ( probably another hc entirely, but i just want to mention that i do try to make sure i never portray him as above his flaws, but also maintain the difficulty of his position and lack of healthy perspective in his life. )
i do think he at least had an inkling that Shigure cared enough about Akito to feel hurt over Kureno’s both staying by her side, and sleeping with her. you’re right, Shigure doesn’t seem to have told anyone about his feelings. ( and regardless, even if he did – Kureno would not rank very high on the list of people he might tell. ) but at the very least, what Kureno does know is that he cannot feel his connection to Akito or any of the Jyuunishi as deeply as they do, and he knows that in some way, he’s robbing everyone of something they seem to need. he promised Akito to stay by her side but it’s painful because they can’t feel each other through that bond and his devotion, no matter how deep, will never live up to those she’s bonded to.
like Shigure, who Kureno also knows must be hurt, even if it’s only a matter of the bond. so whether or not he figures out that Shigure loves her – he still knows that because of the bond, he’s hurting everyone affected the curse. and even if he hasn’t figured out Shigure, he spends more time with Akito than he does anyone else – he can tell who she yearns for.
( he’s definitely a bit of a dreamer, and has a tendency to get lost in his thoughts – and, of course, doesn’t watch where he’s going. but as much as he’s totally an airhead, it’s also a little cut and dry. he doesn’t know much about the world and doesn’t have enough self awareness to be embarrassed by things, but he does have a good sense for people. he knows more than he realizes, and while he tries to be honest and tries to do the right thing, he has more distance and perspective since the curse’s breaking means there’s one less thing to bias his worldview. he sees a little more clearly than those still affected. )
Kureno probably only realizes the reality of Shigure’s feelings by the very end, but he has reason enough to believe that his actions are not without consequence.
