“Honey, did we have to go to an outdoor carnival?” Emma’s face scrunched in annoyance. The place was filled with children and adults walking around, with some teenagers mixed in.
“We’re not here for the carnival..remember the pumpkin patch?”
“We could have just bought one from a grocery store.” She folded her arms. You sighed, knowing she was going to be nagging you the whole time.
“You’ve been busy this whole week. I just wanted you to relax and walk around instead.” You said. “You can just call a ride and chill at my place until I get back.” You slowly walked into the carnival.
Emma’s annoyed look dissipated. There was a pause before you heard her walking fast behind you. Her arm linked around yours quickly, and she tugged you along.
“Let’s get going. Don’t want any of the good pumpkins to be taken.” She pulled you with her as she walked, making it a little hard to keep up. You laughed at the sudden change in tone.
The small carnival was pretty beautiful. Lights filled the place, not too bright but enough to make the place feel welcoming.
There were stands filled with trinkets and souvenirs. Kids walked around with their faces painted as zombies and other ghouls.
The smell of food hit your senses, and you turned to see a place specifically for food. Your eyes landed on the candy stand.
“Do you want to check out the stands? It’s a little early before they open up the patch.” You looked up at her.
“What happened to only being here for the pumpkins?” You hear her repeat what you said in a mocking tone, and you groan.
“Come on! It'll be fun.” You pointed at the candy stand from before.
She lets go of you, and you walk to the candy stand. Thankfully, the line wasn’t long; only a kid and her mother stood in front of you.
Waiting for their order to be finished, you stare at the menu options. Your face contorted in confusion. Almost everything was sour-flavored. The prices were outrageous too.
“Your teeth will fall out if you just look at the candy.” You hear her whisper behind you.
“I’m only here for the plain candy apple anyway.” You whisper back to her.
Once the family left, you told the woman standing behind the counter what you wanted.
You pull out your wallet from your jacket, preparing to pay for it, until you feel Emma’s hand swatting your hand down.
"At least let me pay for this unhealthy snack.” You watch her pull out a wad of cash from the inside of her coat pocket.
“You don’t have any singles. Besides, I stopped by the stand so I pay for it.” You shoo her away and hand the woman a $10 bill.
The woman hands you the candy apple and your change, and you feel Emma’s arm wrap around your waist.
“Feeling extra touchy today, are we?” You teased. Usually, she’d respond with something that’ll make you flustered, but she doesn’t.
“No, it's just too many people around. I wouldn’t be able to tell if someone would dare try to hurt you.” She said. It warmed your heart hearing that she’s looking out for you, but you didn’t want her to stress out during the entire trip.
You hummed quietly, looking for something else that could ease her mind, or at least distract her.
Your eyes passed by the various carnival rides, not exactly in the mood for whiplash. Then spot a target blasting game. It had multiple water guns on it, and nobody was playing.
“Let’s go play that.” You pull her towards the carnival game, ignoring her complaints.
The game was free, thankfully, and all you needed to do was aim at the bullseye, gain a lot of pints, and win the best prizes.
You sat down on the bench and patted the seat next to you. “Come on.” You looked up at her.
Emma had her arms folded, staring down at you. You held your ground, however. You were set on having her relax, and maybe a little game would help.
She held the little staring match before caving in. You watch her sit down and grab the water gun.
The man sitting behind the counter turned on the game, and the timer began.
You noticed that as the timer went down, the target moved faster, but it was easy to keep track of it. Emma was behind a few points, making you even more determined to stay on track.
You were concentrated, keeping a watchful eye on the target. It jolted down, but as you moved the water gun down with it, your body suddenly went stiff.
“What the fuck?” You hear Emma chuckling. A blue crystal-like halo shone above her head.
“You’re cheating!” You whisper-yelled. Emma's laughter became slightly louder as her points went up, and yours remained the same.
The man running the game wasn’t even paying attention. He was busy talking to someone else. Once her points surpassed yours, you felt control coming back to your limbs.
Unfortunately, it was too late. The timer had run down to zero, and Emma won.
You stare in shock at both of your points being displayed on the screen. Emma was trying her best not to burst out in laughter.
The audacity of this woman.
“Whoa, she won? Got a lot of points too.” He grabbed a stick. “Man, I had imaginary money betted on you.” He pulled down the highest costing reward. A huge stuffed polar bear.
You rolled your eyes at Emma hugging the stuffed animal. “Yeah, me too.” You mumbled.
“Come on, darling! We have much more to do.” Emma said in a cheerful tone. You feel her grab your hand, and she pulls you in the direction of the Ferris wheel.
“Beautiful stunt back there.” You said, sarcasm seeped through your voice.
“I know, right! The look on your face was absolutely priceless.” She smiled. You groaned at her enthusiasm, but she was happier so you didn’t mind so much.
Both of you stood behind another couple waiting to get on. Your neck craned up, admiring the Ferris wheel. The lights blocked out the surrounding area, and your vision focused on the Ferris wheel itself.
The ride came to a stop, and the people operating it let riders off. As one set of people got off, another got on, and soon it was your turn.
You got on the ride first, then held out your hand to help Emma on. She sat across from you, still holding the plushie.
Once you both were seated in the cabin, the ride moved up a little to let the next groups in. The scenery was amazing so far, and you bet it would look even better if you were higher up.
You looked back at Emma, who was already staring at you. She held a content smile, eyes adoring you. “You planned this, didn’t you?” She asked.
You leaned back against the cabin's wall. “Perhaps.” You say. She playfully rolled her eyes at your vagueness.
“Hope you didn’t forget I'm a telepath. Or else you want another reminder.” She raised the stuffed polar bear.
“I don’t want to hear it, cheater.” You put your hand on the plushie, pushing it back down into her lap and making Emma laugh.
The Ferris wheel moved up once again, and the two of you were much higher. You could almost see the lights of a nearby town through the fog.
“I noticed how stressed you’ve been this week. With you helping mutant-kind.” Emma looked off to the side. Recently, it’s been hard for mutants. You’re honestly surprised this trip has gone so smoothly so far. “I saw this carnival a while ago and have been wanting to come here since.”
“So you did plan this.” You nodded. A strong jolt shook the cabin, then the Ferris wheel started to move.
“Well, I’m glad you managed to convince me.” Her gaze shifted from the ground to the sky. The stars were easier to see now that you were at the peak of the ride, away from the lights below.
“This view is breathtaking. If only I could stay up here.” She whispered the last part to herself.
However, you weren’t staring outside of the cabin. Your eyes were glued to Emma. Her jaw was relaxed, her shoulders slumped, and that tense, arrogant mood from before was replaced with tranquility. She even held the stuffed bear against her.
“Isn’t the view beautiful, dear?” Your eyes never left her face. Your mission was now accomplished, and you were relishing your reward.
