what is mike's narrative if not a horrible queer tragedy. the ending directly mirrors s1 with a sudden desperate mike/el kiss followed el dying and mike mourning and holding onto hope that she's still out there somewhere, but. this time he finally gives up. he knows that even if she were still out there, whatever they had is over. el is the only girl he ever had the hope of loving. and that's twice now they've kissed only for that metaphorical hope to immediately die. and then mike wheeler puts away his childhood, which explicitly represents queer happiness and freedom, and closes the door behind him.
