OBSESSION (2026) dir. Curry Barker

One thing about Obsession (2026) that I enjoyed was that it almost asks you to feel empathy for the entity possessing Nikki as well as the real one. Like, obviously the things she's doing are horrific and fucked up, but I think the scene where Bear is asking her to "just be Nikki!" and she eventually just desperatly screams "I can't be Nikki!" does a really good job of showcasing the entity's inner feelings. She's been created with the sole purpose of loving this guy more than anyone else but no matter how perfect it is or how much he claims to love her, its not her that he loves, its Nikki. And any time she stops pretending to be Nikki, he reacts (albeit rightfully) with disgust and horror. She can't be Nikki because Nikki would never love Bear, and so Bear will never love her.

You see her coming to this realization that she's alive again, and she's looking around the room, and she looks so disturbed, and I just remember my dad and multiple people around me being like, 'Dude, I think it's way more disturbing if she just survives this thing.' my most ungrounded and unresearched fear is that so many companies are pushing AI in part because it builds them a pathway towards a subscription model for a huge number of things that should not be subscription, but theoretically could be:

sick of the infinite ai slop? buy Google Premium; it'll automatically detect ai within a site and gives it a credibility score. with premium plus, you can shuffle high-credibility results to the top.

do you want a "luxury" experience? well, you'd have to pay for that luxury, and since the company sure doesn't want to pay its employees; the cost would fall to the consumer.

when automation has made every experience unpleasant; the experience of genuine humanity will be commodified.

Today a woman pulled through drive thru. After examining the menu, she asked, "What's the difference between the blended version and the iced version of that drink?"

My barista on the headset tried. "Uh...one's blended and one's...not."

A note of impatience. "But how are they different?"

My barista turned to look at me.

I switched on my mic. "The blended version is more like sweet treat milkshake vibes and the iced version is better if you're looking for a caffeinated going to work moment."

And somehow it was the correct answer.

Half of my job is responding to nonsense with nonsense and I think it's truly beautiful that that's communication.
