Ilya, just saying the most poetically romantic think that Shane has ever heard (think borderline romantic/possessive cliches in a russian accent) and Shane responding with "shit dude, yeah. 😍"
i know a lot of people like shane enjoying and building legos and i TOTALLY respect the vision and the joy of everyone's #myshane, but i would like to propose for consideration: given his enjoyment of puzzles, ILYA is the one who likes legos. he wasn't allowed to play with them as a kid because mess and tiny pieces escaping containment, but he stumbles across an old set that shane had gotten for christmas one year as a kid (and not been remotely interested in), decides to mess with it because they got snowed in at shane's parents' house until the roads can get plowed the next day, and then really?? enjoys it?? like a lot?? david helps him out with the second one he finds because they are Puzzle Buddies and this falls under that category, but even as a solo activity?? very enjoyable and relaxing for him to sort out these tiny pieces into order, assemble them, and then have a concrete thing he's accomplished.
which then means he starts collecting lego sets as a hobby. shane reads his book, ilya does his latest lego, and they have very enjoyable parallel play time unwinding in the evening.
but shane also?? doesn't understand?? why everyone who comes to their house?? always thinks they're HIS lego sets??? man is undiagnosed and also has no real awareness of associations that people tend to have with other people who are also Shane Shaped, so he TRULY has no idea why every single person who comes to their house sees the legos and immediately turns to HIM to go, "oh? you're into legos? that's cool."
no!! he is not!! the legos ain't got nothing to do with him!! go talk legos with his husband!! leave shane out of it!!
I just know that Yuna made at least one of her bridesmaids cry.
So, the documentary in The Long Game about Shane and Ilya’s rivalry. What a fucking embarrassment for ESPN and everybody involved in its creation!
You direct a sports documentary about two of the greatest hockey players in the world. And how they were bitter rivals but eventually became friends and even started a charity together. It’s good, juicy, it gets excellent ratings, and is possibly award winning. The future is bright.
ESPN’s publicists keep talking about how you had unprecedented levels of access to these superstars, and meticulously combed through over a decade of footage of them. The only thing viewers grumble about is that they still don’t know why Ilya Rozanov left Boston for Ottawa. It’s the one mystery of their rivalry that you couldn’t unravel. But overall, the reactions are very positive. A professional triumph for you.
And then only a month later, the whole world (including you) is astonished to find out that these heated rivals have been in a serious and secret romantic relationship for years!!! And you missed the whole thing! One (1) month ago.
The documentary would quickly go from jewel in the crown to albatross around the neck of everybody involved in it. Because you did all this research, you had all this access, and yet you didn’t have a clue. They’re together? They’re getting fucking married? Ilya Rozanov moved to Ottawa because he was more in love with Shane Hollander than he was with being on a cup winning team?
Oh my God, ESPN would be contemplating destroying every copy of the documentary they commissioned, and which had great ratings. Everybody involved in making it has to log into LinkedIn and delete it from their professional history.
Hockey fans keep rewatching it, but not because they like it anymore. Because they can’t believe not even the professionals figured it out, and are looking for clues. The director will be strongly considering flying to Canada to murder both his documentary subjects.
shane hollander does not have a reserved 'baby voice' for kids. that man is holding proper conversations with the pike children. goo goo ga ga? yes, what an excellent take on the montreal property market. i must consider. truck red? mmm, i prefer green, but each to their own, i guess. hayden, who was asked by theriault to look out for shane in his rookie season and has now ended up with a 25 year old son, can only watch on in wonder as arthur pike learns what taxes are before attending a day of school.
i know in my heart that shane at work or in front of a camera only calls ilya rozanov (or roz if he's being playful), but ilya pretty exclusively uses "my husband" purely because he loves saying it so much
which means there is absolutely a compilation video on youtube that's just ten minutes of ilya saying "my husband"
it ends up becoming an ongoing series
My new period-appropriate crack headcanon is that the boston raiders once used akinator to figure out who montreal jane is and it kept telling them if was shane hollander and they kept thinking it was the weirdest fucking bug
my controversial Shane opinion is that he does not like American football. Loves all sports except American football and its like
NFL teams play 17 games in the regular season with a week where they play no games at all.
Shane is playing 82 games in a regular season, plays all the teams in the league at least twice, more often if they're in the same conference. NFL teams don't even play all the other teams once.
He will go to a Superbowl watch party if he's not play, and knows enough to have a conversation at a barbecue but he does not follow a team or really give a shit what they're up to.
Basketball? tThey play 82 games a season like Shane. BASEBALL? 162! Those are athletes being pushed in the same grueling schedule as Shane. He is like hell yeah what stretches are baseball players doing, what are the golden state warriors doing for cardio, what are they feeding these guys, how was the draft?
Football is just like, "Oh yeah they also play professional sports. They're not even in the Olympics though, so..."
Ilya: Are the hurricanes in East Carolina or West Carolina?
Shane: you don't know what state the Carolina Hurricanes are in?
Ilya: Well I know from name is one of them.
Troy: I don't think its East and West Carolina, that doesn't sound right...
Ilya: No it is East and West, like East Virginia and West Virginia. Trust me I lived in United States for 8 years.
Dykstra: You never hear about things happening in East Virginia.
Shane: You all are so fucking stupid. Its not east and west, its just one fucking state, the state of Carolina. The Carolina Hurricanes.
ohhhh I’m sleep deprived and thinking about Shane and Ilya getting to set photos of each other as their lock screens and I am in fact weepy about it
I think Shane wouldn’t change his often. He makes it an artsy picture of Ilya from behind, looking at the water at the cottage. He changes it a year later to a picture of them hoisting the Cup together and there’s really no beating that
Ilya would change his on a weekly basis because there are sooo many good pictures to choose from! His favorites are ALWAYS of Shane with Anya. Usually of Shane cheesing (he loves his smile sm), but there’s one that’s heavy in his rotation of Shane dozing off with his glasses on and Anya also dozing in his lap ❤️
David and Yuna are also thrilled that Shane and Ilya can now be their lockscreens! Yuna uses a photo from their wedding day, then also changes it to a picture of them hoisting the Cup. David uses a corny family photo where half of them are blinking and Ilya’s holding Anya up like Simba in the lion king
Book Shane does NOT LIKE IT when other Jeep drivers give him rubber ducks. What is he supposed to do with them?! He doesn’t want anything interfering with his line of sight while driving. He is considering getting an anti-duck car magnet but that seems too rude.
Show Shane especially does NOT LIKE IT when he is given rubber ducks because he doesn’t even drive a Jeep!
Both Ilyas are secretly leaving Shane ducks to get a rise out of him and Shane still has not caught on.
I accidentally ficced a tiny bit?
Counter-argument:
Show Shane used to drive a Jeep (we don't see this but in my heart it's Canon) as a rookie. His dislike of blocking his windshield view is legendary. There's a viral video (clipped from an Instagram Live of Pike's) going around of one of his teammates putting a wrapped sandwich on the dashboard while he's at a stoplight. The teammate needs both hands free so he can look for something, and it's just a flat-ass Subway sandwich, nothing huge. That day, the world gets a tiny treat as they get to see Bitchy Shane at his finest, talking about clear lines of sight and accident statistics. He actually pulls over to rant about it. It's been shared everywhere. Most of the people watching it aren't even hockey fans, they have no idea who Shane is.
When Shane's inevitably courted by Jeep for a brand deal (after he and Ilya have been outed), Yuna gets to work, because Yuna loves her son more than anything, but she, like Ilya, is possessed of the heart of a troll. A loving and well-meaning troll, but a troll nonetheless. She drags Ilya into it.
Jeep is known for their "yankee ingenuity" - working with what they've got. What they've got is clips of Shane, who no longer drives a Jeep but very publicly used to, being given ducks by Jeep fans, and being baffled and masking annoyance with confused smiles. In one video, a fan finally explains the Jeep-rubber-duck connection, and Shane replies, "But I haven't driven a Jeep since I was a rookie?". They have... Literally hundreds of these videos. The man, assuming he's not throwing the ducks away, must have a giant stash of them somewhere. And they have one viral video about his dedication to driving safety that is inching closer and closer to 1 billion views on Instagram. Gay or not, this man is meme gold. Meme platinum. They'd be morons not to work with that.
On April 4 (2022 probably), which is International Jeep Day, Shane shows up to Jeep Canada to shoot a social media video about him being the new Brand Ambassador for Jeep.
He gets money and a free Jeep, what's not to love?, Yuna had asked him last night, while he was panicking. Social media is the norm but he still hates it. It's also a brand, she tells him, that is associated with Manly Dudes Doing Manly Things, and just because he's gay doesn't mean he's not also manly, so this is a way to show the haters that they're the ones who should fuck off, not Shane himself. Hmmm. I guess it COULD be in 2021 but that would be like. A month at most? After Ilya and Shane's social media outing. Jeep would have had to pivot fast... Actually yeah, fuck it. It's April 4, 2021. This is PR for Jeep AND for Shane.
He walks onto stage and is greeted by Jeep Guy, their in house spokesperson on social media. He's an actor, and Shane will not remember his name.
Three, two, one, action.
"Hello, Jeep fans! We're in the studio today to welcome our new Brand Ambassador to our awesome Jeep Family: Shane Hollander! Shane is (insert all of his hockey shit here, I don't feel like looking it up bc I don't wanna read the books).
Shane, we are so happy to welcome you to the Jeep family, and to introduce you to your newest ride."
Shane replies with his scripted response, smiling at all the right times. He's a good actor, good at PR. Jeep Guy brings up a picture of the current Jeep lineup, and then it zooms in on what Shane's getting, and the two go over the specs. Shane will ask some questions, and Jeep Guy will answer. It's all scripted, which is good because Shane doesn't know shit about cars.
Shane's new Brand Ambassador Jeep is a 2021 Wrangler Rubicon 2-door, with a removable hard-top and soft-top ("For whatever the weather is like in Canada," the Jeep guy says, smiling winningly at the camera. Shane resists the urge to roll his eyes), which allows protection and insulation from rain and snow, light protection from wind and light showers, and the freedom of the open air.
The hard-top has an attached horizontal cargo rack, for any equipment that may not fit into the spacious back seat and cargo storage. The soft-top allows you to strap-through cargo directly to the roll bars. The roll bars are a space-age composite material to keep your cargo where it belongs, and to keep more precious cargo, like Shane ("and anyone else," implies Ilya) safe, in case someone causes an accident.
Jeep Guy then talks about how safe a driver he's heard Shane is and plays a little clip of him ranting in the viral video. This is off-script, but Shane has dealt with press junkets before. He can. He can do this.
Shane groans. "Comeau knew not to put sh- uh, stuff! on my dashboard! And Pike shouldn't have been streaming!" Jeep Guy giggles a little, sounding a bit hysterical (probably because Pike and social media is... A Topic), but he quickly segues into some of the videos of Shane being given ducks. Shane is getting redder and redder.
"Did you keep all of those ducks?" Jeep Guy asks. Completely off-script and, it's not technically a contract violation but it's not awesome, either.
Shane blushes even worse. He'll just be honest. It's not damning or anything.
"Well, the ones that were decorated I kept. They're cute, and people put work into them. I appreciate that they wanted to give me a gift. The ones that were plain and new, I gave to kids at games. I'd sign 'em. The... well-loved ones... I didn't feel right just throwing them out, because I'm not sure how to, honestly? Are rubber ducks biodegradable? I don't know! So I just kept them in boxes... until that one woman told me about Jeep owners and rubber ducks. Then I signed them all and keep them with me. Whenever I see a Jeep in the wild, I leave one on the hood. I'm almost out of them now! I think I have maybe 20 of the signed for leaving on Jeeps left. But I really love the idea of a ratty duck, signed by a random hockey player, showing up on your Jeep hood. I thought it was funny."
(Shane inherited some of Yuna's troll heart.)
Jeep Guy laughs. "Where do you keep the decorated ones? How many do you have?"
"Oh. I. Uh. Maybe a hundred? Hundred fifty? I've got a big dvd shelf in my trophy room for them. It's not the Stanley Cup, but if it weren't for the fans we wouldn't even have a Stanley Cup, so." He laughs. "I don't feel comfortable blocking my view of the road, so they'll never be in the car, but I still enjoy the fact that people thought of me while makin' 'em."
Jeep Guy laughs again. "Well, about that. We've been working on something for you."
A curtain peels back to reveal the Brand Ambassador Jeep. It's Shane's favorite color (whatever that is, insert that here. I'm imagining cobalt blue).
And... It has suction cup (and other affixatives - hooks, slime, removable plaster, command strips, etc.) plexiglas rubber duck displays all over it. Along the hard top roof (inside and out), along the less-important window areas, and in special recesses in the dash.
Jeep Guy explains: There are special duck-holders inside that rely on pressure rather than glue, so no ducks are permanently held and they can be swapped out. There are innovative ways to mount ducks, in temporary and permanent ways, that have all been specially devised for Shane and people like him, with the help of maker communities around the world.
(Jeep had been working on this for a while, and they weren't gonna let a little thing like being queer Jeep-ardize their plans. And hell, the gay thing? They can use that to their advantage. Advertisers are great at using tearful emotions to drive sales.)
Shane is given a lot of these duck holders, and even though he's kind of irritated that he wasn't told about this (autism! And surprises! Aren't awesome!), he's also touched, because he can interact with fans in a clearly-directed way, AND be a safe driver.
He is less touched when a gleeful Ilya shows up towards the end of the social media recording with his contribution: ducks MELTED TOGETHER, made to look like TruckNutz.
Ilya theatrically hangs the monstrosity from the trailer hitch while Shane facepalms. Ilya then grins and waves goodbye to the camera, and blows a kiss to both Shane and Jeep Guy.
The Jeep spokesperson laughs and says, "Hey, you chose him." It's literally the only acknowledgement of Shane being gay. It's a no issue - the perfect way to handle it.
Then Jeep Guy segues back into the features of the latest models of Jeep, with the pre-scripted commentary from Shane.
At the end, there's a brief recap about how these duck-innovations were all licensed through the makers that helped invent them, and will be available for sale on Jeep's website. This is both to improve traffic safety for duck-loving Jeep owners everywhere, and to encourage this playful hobby among Jeep enthusiasts. All of the proceeds after cost from April through the end of June will be evenly divided between the Irina Foundation and (insert your fave LGBTQIA charity here), in honor of Shane and Ilya. After that, Jeep will split profits with the maker community members, but every year, June will be a fundraiser for LGBTQIA orgs and the Irina Foundation.
Shane wasn't told anything about the duck stuff and inside, he's a mess by the time he's done.
Ilya is waiting for him in the green room of the filming studio. Shane cries into his shoulder. It's gonna be okay. He has Ilya, he has his mom, and he has a Jeep that's gonna be so full of ducks.
I’m CACKLING this is so good. The ducks are his destiny and I love him signing them and worrying that they aren’t biodegradable. 💖💖
“Jeep-ardize” and the TruckNutz sent me.
Shane was actually not prepared for how different travelling with the centaurs are. Sure, he expected it to be nicer, having Ilya at his side. Basically he thought, he would just stick to watching movies, maybe read a few pages, and taking perfectly timed naps to prevent a jet lag, just that maybe now he could rest his head on Ilyas shoulder. Well. He might never know peace again.
He is now regular part of the little card playing group, playing one or two rounds of poker or asshole at the beginning of their flight. They are laughing and trashtalking and Shane's pleasently suprised he's not getting thrown out the group for ripping the others off with his stone hard poker face.
Shane accidentally started a book club that now semi-regularly holds meetings in their airplane to discuss hockey books, a tradtion that started when Luca asked Shane what he was reading and then proceeded to buy the books as well, which caused a handful more team members to follow suit.
But his favourite thing to do is talking shop with Ilya. Both off them sticking their heads together over their ipad, going though game tape, discussing strategies, examine plays with a level of perspicacity reserved just for them. Often they sit together with Bood and Troy, so they all can exchange their experiences with different opponents, examine weaknesses and strengths & Shane finds so much calm and joy in being part of a group of like-minded people, talking like equals, like a real team, not having to carry the burden of being the head of the team alone.
Shane doesn't get to watch as many movies alone and in peace anymore as before but he wouldn't change it for the world.
David Hollander Dad Behavior™️ idea:
You know how you can have a calendar made with your own pictures and like people make them with pics of their kids to give the grandparents?
So one year for Christmas David made one for Yuna with family pics and Ilya was enamored of it. David kept catching him leafing through it: the group shot of all of them at the farmers market with Anya, the picture of Shane sitting with Ilya’s head in his lap, the one of Yuna and Shane side by side laughing together. So of course, David made him one with pictures of Shane and it’s like the cheesiest thing ever but he loves it. Shane is embarrassed of course but secretly loves it and next year he gets one too full of pictures of Ilya and Anya.

Shane books a private couples surfing lesson while they are on vacation, thinking it will be a fun activity and will lead to sexy competition.
Ilya takes to surfing immediately and effortlessly. Shane does not - he wipes out consistently, which infuriates him because he prides himself on his balance and agility. He stops caring when he sees Ilya smirking at him while riding a wave and looking like straight out of a surfing movie. Shane spends the rest of the lesson as a very horny spectator.
What if Yuna was a sports broadcasting major and that’s how she ends up meeting David. She’s the host of the sports news radio show at their university, specifically the hockey coverage and her commentary is always brutal. There’s no holds barred, she calls out every player on the team and their shortcomings. But whenever she mentions David, he’s the only player she praises. David ends up being a guest on her show one night and everyone can literally hear their chemistry through their witty banter and hockey jargon. A few days later, after the hockey team wins their game, David calls into the show and asks Yuna out, live on the airwaves. Of course, she says yes and they’ve been inseparable ever since.
