One essential element to understanding the tragedy of the Imperium is that we don’t truly know the Emperor of Mankind and never can. He intentionally obscured his true motivations and intentions from almost everyone. For example, he knew the Imperial Truth was built upon a fundamental falsehood, yet he propagated it anyways. His thoughts and feelings were kept under lock and key, hidden under layers of obfuscation. And then he was reduced to a living corpse, with all of that secrecy and planning amounting to nothing.

10,000 years later, and he’s become a total cypher. When a person enters his presence, they always see and hear things that conform to their own beliefs, even if they contradict other people standing next to them before the Golden Throne. Everyone projects their truth onto this rotting thing, and the man who was so careful to never be understood has become a bystander in his own narrative. Not even his remaining sons truly understood him, and anyone who might have insight into his soul is dead and gone.

I was scrolling through your popular posts, as one does, and I came across a few of your Project Hail Mary ideas. Specifically, the one about Grace and Rocky meeting another alien and the Uncanny Valley effect.

that gave me an idea.

I'm just imagining Ryland being So Freaking Nervous when meeting an Astartes (or group of them) after the Hail Mary is found in deep space, clearly lost and not answering their calls to communicate

I'm just imagining the Hail Mary gets yoinked ahead in time by Big E because Astrophage is once again a problem, but its been so long, there's no cure anymore and he can't be losing his empire to a star sickness from thousands of years ago.

Grace staring way up at an astartes, a man who's definitely human he thinks, but way bigger in ways he's not sure is entirely normal. That's scary enough, but think about Rocky too

He's used to the sounds Grace and his body makes, but astartes have whole extra organs. They're Grace shaped, but they sound wrong in ways he doesn't know how to explain.

This is what humanity becomes after they save the stars. It's a shock to them both, and it takes a lot of time for either of them to really accept what they're looking at. And what about Erid? Is it still around? Are the Eridians still alive?

And if it's pre-heresy? The Primarchs would be beyond terrifying for them both. Massive monsters of men, twice their size but still somehow human.

Grace would have a lot to say about the experimentation Big E has been doing with humanity, and I fear he may not be able to keep his mouth shut.
