Witchy Starter Terms

Ground- Clearing/releasing excess energy and also connecting your own energy with the earth’s.

Center- Usually done after Grounding to calm your emotions, mind, and body to be physically and magickally ready to act.

Cleanse- Removing negative energies from an object or a space. Also works on people.

Charge - To infuse an object with personal or external power/intent.

Intent- the energy/focus of the magick and energy you’re working up.

Visualize - Forming mental images. It is done to direct energy during spell work. Much like imagination.

Banish- To magickally end something, Or to rid the presence of. Definitely works on people.

Consecrate- The blessing of an object or place by instilling it with positivity.

Sabbat- The Witches/Pagans festivals or Holidays and changing of the seasons

Talisman- An object charged with personal power to attract a specific force or energy to the wearer. Also known as an amulet.

Cowan- a formally derogatory slang word for a non-Witch, it is now more like the term “muggle” from HP.

Book of Shadows- your (or your coven’s AKA group of 13 or so witches) personal magickal records. You would write tarot readings, associations, and spell outcomes here.

Grimoire- the book of spells of a witch.

Burning Times- A term used by Witches for the period of persecution in the Middle Ages and later on. The Catholic Church oppressed many witches, pagans, and Jewish people. The only actual burnings happened were only in Scotland, and on the continent of Europe. In England and the U.S.A, they were hanged to death.

Esbat- Weekly or biweekly meeting of a coven. Typically held either on the full moon or the new moon.

Old Religion- Another name for the Craft.

Spell- A physical, mental, or verbal directing of magickal energies toward the accomplishment of some goal.

Yule Trees 🎄🎄🎄

The Christmas tree has become the iconic symbol that brings us all back to childhood, the imagery of sparkling evergreen trees, perfectly wrapped presents, and a plump little man dressed in red is something we’re all familiar with. But the idea of a Christmas tree is borrowed, much like many other christin holiday traditions. The predecessor to the Christmas tree was the solstice or Yule tree.

Pagans have been decorating Yule trees since around 4th century c.e. They decorated evergreen trees because they didn’t die during the cold seasons. They were usually a few outdoor trees that would be decorated with ribbons, fruits for successful harvests, nuts for fertility, love charms, coins to bring wealth, and candles which represented the sun, moon, and stars. Decorations often served to remember deceased loved ones at the end of each year. The tradition of gift giving began with early pagans leaving offerings to their deities on or under the trees. These trees were sacred but over time that imagery was absorbed and minimized by Christianity.

What kind of tree to use? 🌲

Really, it’s entirely up to you. Fake trees are a great option if you plan to keep it up for awhile, if you have allergies, or even if you have a more daring cat. Real trees that have been cut are classic and give your house that amazing evergreen smell. If you have trees outside your house decorate one of those. I got a small potted evergreen tree at Home Depot and that’s what I’m going to use, it’s maybe 3 feet tall but I love it and when it outgrows it’s pot it can be planted outside. When I lived in the dorms I hung a few ornaments on an aloe plant, not everyone has access to a tree and that’s totally ok your rule tree can be anything you want it to be.

Consecrating the Tree 🌲

If you have a live tree or plant you can water it with moon water. Pass the smoke of sage or incense through the branches and say:

By fire and water, air and earth,

I consecrate this tree of rebirth

Decorations 🎄

You can make all of your ornaments if you’d like, it’s a great activity to do with friends or family and really gets you in the spirit.

String popcorn or cranberries, if your Yule tree is outdoors this is a great gift for the birds and other little creatures.

If you aren’t using a live tree you can buy live evergreen garlands or a wreath if you want.

You can decorate pinecones and acorns with glitter and ribbon to put on the tree.

Make some paper snowflakes, give them 6 spokes like the witch’s rune Hagalaz

You can make stars with cinnamon sticks or use dried orange slices to add some amazing smells to your tree.

Hang bells to call to the spirits and fae.

Use sun, moon, and star imagery on your tree.

Use electric string lights to encourage the return of the sun

Some uses for lavender:

- Wear the oil, perfume or essence of lavender as a way to attract men, women -or whatever you are into- towards you. Men especially are attracted towards lavender; prostitutes were  known to wear lavender in ancient times to draw in clients.

- Drink a tea of lavender before doing any mental or psychic work; it is said to increase both mental and psychic abilities.

- Burn it or scatter it around your house to ward off evil spirits; as well as cleanse and raise the vibes.

- Scatter a mixture of lavender and rosemary across your doorway to keep unwanted guests * and that really irritating postman*

-Carry some on or around you (ex: keep a sprig in your purse or pocket, wear some oil of it on yourself, throw some in your sock drawer, etc.) for a longevity in your life.

- Add some into your skincare to bring a youthful glow and essence to your skin and body.

Mermaid’s Bath Spell

A spell to promote your beauty and bring it out for the world to see.

You Will Need:

Sea Salt

Ocean Scented Bath Bomb of your choice

Coconut Oil

White and Blue Candles

Sea Shells

Aquamarine

Optional: Music that sounds beautiful to you

Steps:

Draw your bath and light your candles. As bath is filling place your aquamarine and seashells around the rim of the tub. If you are using music start it. Pour in your sea salt before getting in. 

Scoop 1-2 spoonfuls of coconut oil and put it into the bath water

Once in the bath, drop in your bath bomb and close your eyes

Feel the beauty of the ocean around you from the seashells and the water you relax in. Take in the scent. Visualize yourself as a beautiful majestic mermaid out in the ocean, relaxing in the water. Imagine yourself as the most beautiful mermaid you could be, how sailors would wreck countless ships for you. 

Keep this image in your mind as you bath and relax. Run your fingers through your hair imagining it flowing and lovely and your skin soft and glowing.

Stay in the bath as long as you like.

Once you choose to get out imagine yourself like a mermaid leaving the surf and walking up on the beach. You are radiant, you are beautiful. Feel the energy from the water and this visualization stay with you as you get out of the tub and know that you are as beautiful as a mermaid.

Blow out your candles and get ready for the day keeping that image in your mind.

Sun Bath Magick

Neroli oil

Bergamont oil

Sunflower buds/petals, lemon peels, orange peels

Rosemary bath salts

Line the edges of the bathtub with white, yellow, amber candles, sunflowers, citrine, golden topaz, goldstone

4 green witch’s little cat rituals

to bless a cat

♥  catnip (cat magic, love, happiness)

♥  a cat treat

♥  a few flower petals (make sure it is a cat-safe flower just in case!)

find your chosen cat. offer the catnip and/or treat; as they are eating, give them some chin rubs and pets. as you do so, visualize golden energy passing from your fingertips and coating the cat’s fur.

a quick little chant will do: “may this creature be safe from harm, never lonely, never hungry, and always loved.”

sprinkle the flower petals where the cat was resting.

to form a deeper connection with a cat

♥  a piece of licorice root (love and connection)

sit in a comfortable spot in or outdoors with the cat, preferably relaxing. spend as long as you like giving gentle affection to the cat; meditate on the feeling of its fur, the vibrations of its purr, the way its ears twitch. let the cat smell your hand until it is comfortable with the scent. 

take the licorice root in your hand, inhale its scent, then offer it for the cat to smell. cats typically like the smell and taste of licorice root, and medicinally it can help strengthen their immune systems and digestive tracts. magickally, sharing the scent of the licorice can connect you and the cat more deeply.

a charm to draw cats to you

♥  a pinch of dried catnip, valerian, and rue

♥  a piece of brown cloth and brown thread (animal magick)

make a charm out of these three herbs and carry it with you to inspire magickal attraction to you from cats nearby.

a beauty charm/spell to capture feline elegance

♥  a square of pink fabric and pink ribbon

♥  a teaspoon or so of catnip

assemble the catnip in the fabric, gather the corners, and tie the pink ribbon to secure it as tightly as you can (or use another method, like sewing, to fasten it). hold the charm close and inhale its mild herbal scent; whisper, “may i possess a cat’s beautiful energy
