Bakugou Katsuki — “You’re staring at my wife an awful lot.”
The annual Hero Foundation Gala was one of the few events Katsuki genuinely hated.
He’d rather fight three villains back-to-back than spend an evening pretending to enjoy small talk.
Unfortunately, sponsors liked appearances.
Standing beside you in a tailored black suit that somehow made him look even more intimidating than his hero costume.
Embarrassingly beautiful.
The elegant evening dress suited you perfectly, your hair was done just enough to look effortless, and your smile hadn’t left your face since the two of you walked through the doors.
He’d already caught at least twenty people staring.
He chose to ignore nineteen of them.
The twentieth had walked into a pillar after realizing Bakugou had caught him looking. Served him right.
Your voice pulled him out of his thoughts.
“You’ve been here twelve minutes.”
“Twelve minutes too long.”
You laughed, slipping your arm through his.
You smiled, squeezing his arm once.
Didn’t need expensive food.
As long as you were there, he could survive the evening.
someone else had apparently come to the same conclusion.
“Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight”
One of the event coordinators waved him over.
“Could we borrow you for just a quick interview?”
“You’ll be five minutes?” you asked.
He looked around the ballroom once. Twice.
He reluctantly followed the coordinator toward the stage.
The interview took longer than expected.
Every question somehow turned into three more.
“What message would you like to—” “Next.”
The reporters eventually gave up.
By the time Katsuki escaped, nearly fifteen minutes had passed.
He immediately searched the room.
Near one of the sponsor displays.
You were talking to another pro hero.
He recognized him vaguely.
A newer hero. Popular. Good reputation. Strong quirk.
Not someone Katsuki knew personally.
Heroes talked. Networking was normal.
Then he noticed something.
You had already tried ending the conversation twice.
“…Well, I’d better go find my husband.”
Another excuse to keep you standing there.
“It was nice meeting you.”
“I’ve actually been meaning to ask…”
Not enough to invade your space.
There was no misunderstanding anymore.
It had started with harmless compliments.
“…Your husband must be busy.”
You laughed politely. Not because it was funny.
Because you didn’t know what else to do with cameras only a few feet away.
“I’d love to take you dancing.”
“…Then you understand why I’ll have to decline.”
“I can accept one dance.”
Still smiling. Still polite. Still firm.
you thought that would be enough. It wasn’t.
“But I admire beautiful women more.”
Your smile finally faded.
You turned slightly. Intent on leaving. He stepped with you.
Katsuki saw everything. The first compliment. The second.
The way you kept glancing around. The way you tried to leave.
The way the man ignored every opening. His jaw clenched.
Kirishima had wandered over with a drink.
He was watching. Waiting. Because he knew you.
If you wanted him to intervene—
you looked up. Across the room. Your eyes met his. Just for a second.
Long enough for him to read your expression.
Not fear. Not panic. Just…
The conversation stopped the moment Katsuki walked over.
Not because he said anything.
Because of the way he carried himself.
Calm. Controlled. Dangerously calm.
Close enough that your shoulders brushed.
Without looking away from the other hero, he rested one hand lightly against the small of your back.
Not possessive. Protective. A quiet reminder. You’re not alone.
“There you are,” he said.
“I’ve been looking for you.”
Relief flooded your face so quickly it almost hurt him.
“I was just about to come find you.”
The other hero smiled awkwardly.
The man’s confidence wavered slightly.
“You have a lovely wife.”
The word landed like a brick.
The ballroom suddenly felt much quieter.
“You would,” Katsuki interrupted.
“You have been for the last ten minutes.”
The hero laughed nervously.
“I think you’ve misunderstood.”
Then Katsuki looked him directly in the eyes.
“…You’re staring at my wife an awful lot.”
Not loud. Not threatening.
The other hero finally seemed to realize exactly who he was talking to.
“Then maybe,” Katsuki said evenly, “next time believe a damned married woman the first time she tells you she’s leaving.”
You released a breath you hadn’t realized you’d been holding.
Katsuki looked down at you.
“…I just didn’t want to make a scene.”
“I kept trying to leave.”
“I didn’t want to embarrass him in front of everyone.”
“…You were worried about embarrassing him?”
“I was worried about embarrassing everyone.”
He stared at you for a moment.
“What does that even mean?”
“It means you’re too nice.”
“You apologized to the guy.”
That tiny spark of irritation. Not directed at you. At the situation.
“You know what the worst part was?” he asked.
“I couldn’t walk over immediately.”
“Because I know you.” He crossed his arms.
“If I’d interrupted the second he complimented you, you’d have been annoyed.”
“I was waiting for you to tell me you wanted out.”
“…That’s why I looked at you.”
“I hoped you’d understand.”
neither of you spoke. Then you reached for his hand.
“I wasn’t encouraging him.”
“I only wanted to find you.”
That made something in him finally settle.
He intertwined your fingers with his.
“I’m absolutely getting smug.”
“But you still married me.”
A tiny smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
“So quit giving random heroes heart attacks.”
“They looked at you for five minutes and forgot common sense.”
He lifted your joined hands just slightly.
“But I can make one thing clear.”
His crimson eyes met yours.
Simple. Matter-of-fact. Completely sincere.
He squeezed your hand once.
“Now let’s get out of this stupid gala.”
“I thought you’d never ask.”
Kirishima Eijirou — “A real man knows when ‘no’ means no.”
Kirishima had never understood why people thought hero galas were glamorous.
Sure, the ballroom was beautiful.
Crystal chandeliers reflected golden light across polished marble floors, servers carried trays of expensive food through the crowd, and every famous pro hero in Japan seemed to be gathered in one place.
But after the first hour?
Everyone was just standing around talking.
The only reason he didn’t mind attending was because you were with him.
“You’ve smiled at thirty-seven people.”
You looked up from fixing the cuff of his suit.
You laughed, reaching up to straighten his tie.
“You keep messing this up.”
“I don’t know how those things work.”
“You’ve worn ties before.”
“Yeah, and you’ve fixed them every time.”
You rolled your eyes affectionately.
You pretended to think about it.
He clutched his chest dramatically.
Your laugh was bright enough that a few nearby heroes smiled without even realizing why.
Kirishima couldn’t help smiling too.
God. He loved hearing you laugh. It was impossible not to.
Before he could say anything else, someone called his name from across the room.
He turned to see Fat Gum waving him over enthusiastically.
“There you are! Come meet these sponsors!”
Kirishima looked back at you.
“I’ll probably grab something to drink.”
He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly.
You smiled and patted his arm.
“I’ll find you in a few minutes.”
The conversation with sponsors lasted longer than expected.
It wasn’t unpleasant. Just…
Long. Every introduction led to another handshake.
Every handshake led to another conversation.
By the time he finally escaped, he’d been away nearly fifteen minutes.
His first instinct was exactly what it always was. Find you.
You stood near one of the large windows overlooking the city, a glass of sparkling water in one hand.
Another pro hero stood with you.
Kirishima recognized him.
They’d worked together once before.
Good hero. Friendly enough. He smiled to himself.
You weren’t standing alone.
At first, nothing seemed unusual. The man laughed. You laughed politely in return. Normal.
Then you glanced toward the crowd. Then toward the exit.
Kirishima tilted his head slightly.
You shifted your weight. He stepped closer.
Not enough for anyone else to notice.
You smiled politely again.
Then he saw your lips move.
“…I should probably go find my husband.”
Kirishima couldn’t hear the words.
Only saw him smile and continue talking. Instead of letting you leave.
Something about that rubbed him the wrong way.
Maybe he just had another question. He wasn’t going to assume the worst. Not yet.
That’s only fair. He trusted you.
And he believed in giving people the benefit of the doubt.
So he stayed where he was. Watching. Waiting.
You’d known where the conversation was heading almost five minutes ago.
At first, the compliments had been harmless.
“That’s a beautiful dress.”
“Your smile lights up the room.”
Easy enough to laugh off.
Then they became more personal.
“I’ve heard a lot about you.”
“I can see why everyone likes you.”
“I didn’t realize Red Riot was this lucky.”
That was your first clue.
You’d tried leaving twice.
“I should really get back to my husband.”
Another question. Another compliment. Another excuse.
You answered politely because there were reporters only a few meters away.
Making a scene wouldn’t help anyone.
The conversation was beginning to feel less like conversation…
…and more like being cornered.
You took another subtle step back.
“I really do need to go.”
Your smile grew noticeably tighter.
“I’d like to get to know you better.”
“I don’t think that’s appropriate.”
For the first time all evening…
He looked mildly surprised.
You hoped he’d finally gotten the message.
Instead, he smiled again.
For a heartbeat, you thought that would finally end the conversation.
“You know,” he said with an easy grin, “your husband’s a lucky man.”
“I bet he has to fight people off all the time.”
You let out a small laugh.
“No. Most people are respectful.”
The emphasis wasn’t lost on him.
Or at least… You hoped it wasn’t.
You shifted your glass to your other hand.
“Now, if you’ll excuse me—”
“I was actually wondering if you’d save me a dance.”
“I’m not dancing tonight.”
“You don’t have to tell your husband.”
The warmth left your expression entirely.
When you spoke again, your voice was still calm, but noticeably firmer.
“I don’t keep things from my husband.”
Silence stretched between you.
For the first time that evening, he seemed to realize he’d pushed too far.
Instead of apologizing, he chuckled awkwardly.
“I guess Red Riot is as scary off the battlefield as everyone says.”
You looked at him for a long moment.
Your answer surprised him.
The words came so naturally that they made you smile despite yourself.
You turned slightly, intending to leave again.
Just enough to unintentionally block your path.
Your patience was beginning to wear thin.
“I’m trying to be polite.”
“I’m also trying to leave.”
“I’ve said no several times.”
a familiar laugh reached your ears.
You glanced across the ballroom. Kirishima.
He’d just finished talking with Fat Gum.
The second his eyes found yours, he smiled instinctively.
You smiled back. It was small. Relieved.
Almost without thinking, you held his gaze for an extra second.
Kirishima’s smile softened.
He understood. You weren’t panicking. You weren’t in danger.
You wanted out. That was all he needed to know.
He didn’t march over. He didn’t glare. He didn’t clench his fists.
Instead, he excused himself from the group he was speaking with and made his way across the ballroom at an unhurried pace.
Calm. Confident. Comforting.
The moment he reached you, his grin returned in full.
His voice was warm enough that your shoulders relaxed immediately.
“I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”
“I was looking for you too.”
The tiny sigh of relief you let out.
The way you instinctively moved half a step closer to him.
He slipped an arm comfortably around your waist. Not possessive. Just… familiar. Home.
“Sorry to interrupt,” Kirishima said, turning toward the other hero with the same friendly smile he wore around almost everyone. “Mind if I steal my wife for a bit?”
There wasn’t an ounce of hostility in his voice.
Which somehow made it impossible to argue with him.
“I was actually asking if she’d dance.”
Kirishima looked down at you.
You answered immediately.
“Guess there’s your answer.”
The hero rubbed the back of his neck.
“I was only being friendly.”
Kirishima’s smile remained.
“I know you probably didn’t mean anything by it.”
“…But,” Kirishima continued gently, “she’s been trying to leave this conversation for a while.”
The smile slowly slipped from the other hero’s face.
“I saw her try to excuse herself more than once.”
“I tend to keep an eye on my wife.”
There wasn’t an accusation in it.
He looked at you with such quiet certainty that your chest tightened.
“I also trust her when she says she’s uncomfortable.”
The words weren’t loud. They didn’t need to be.
The other hero glanced toward you.
Only now did he seem to notice how stiff your posture had become.
“But a real man listens the first time a woman says no.”
No anger. No raised voice. Just disappointment.
The hero lowered his head slightly.
This time, it sounded genuine.
You gave him a small nod.
After another quiet apology, he walked away.
You watched him disappear into the crowd before finally letting out a long breath.
Kirishima looked down at you almost immediately.
His smile faded into something more concerned.
“I should’ve come over sooner.”
“I kept telling myself to trust you.”
“But then I wondered if I was leaving you alone too long.”
You reached for his hand.
“You did exactly what I wanted.”
“I knew if I needed you…”
You intertwined your fingers with his.
His expression softened so completely that it made your heart ache.
You leaned your head briefly against his shoulder.
“You don’t have to thank me.”
“You’re the strongest person I know.”
“And you’re my favorite person.”
“So I figured if you wanted my help…”
He squeezed your hand gently.
He pressed a quick kiss against your forehead.
“We’re skipping the gala and getting burgers instead.”
“That sounds much more manly.”
His grin returned instantly.
“Now you’re speaking my language.”
Denki Kaminari — “She smiled because she’s polite. Not because she was interested.”
If there was one thing Denki had learned after becoming a Pro Hero, it was this:
People loved fancy events.
Not because they were boring.
The free food was amazing.
The expectation that every hero had to look elegant while pretending they weren’t counting down the minutes until they could leave.
Thankfully, you were there.
“You’ve been staring at the dessert table for five minutes.”
Denki gasped dramatically.
“I’m appreciating the craftsmanship.”
“Those tiny cheesecakes took effort.”
He immediately turned toward you.
He gently took your hands, looking you up and down with exaggerated seriousness.
You rolled your eyes, smiling despite yourself.
He leaned closer, lowering his voice.
“I looked the second you walked out of the bedroom.”
“You looked beautiful then.”
“You always know what to say.”
He intertwined his fingers with yours.
Moments like this reminded you why you loved him so much.
Even after years together…
He still looked at you like you were the prettiest person in every room.
A photographer waved enthusiastically.
“Could we get a few solo shots?”
Denki groaned dramatically.
“It’ll feel like thirty.”
He reluctantly let go of your hand.
You bumped your shoulder against his.
He flashed you one last grin before jogging toward the photographers.
The photos took much longer than expected.
“My face is going to freeze.”
The photographer laughed.
“You heroes always say that.”
When they finally finished, Denki stretched dramatically before immediately searching the ballroom.
Finding you had become second nature.
He always knew where to look.
Near one of the tall windows.
You were talking to another hero.
Denki recognized him vaguely.
You weren’t standing alone.
As he started walking over, he noticed something.
The other hero was laughing.
You glanced around the room.
You looked toward where Denki had been taking photos.
Your smile became just a little smaller.
Maybe you were just looking for him.
Then the hero leaned closer.
Just enough that Denki instinctively frowned.
He quickly shook the thought away.
Heroes network all the time.
You’d realized the conversation had changed several minutes ago.
At first, he’d simply introduced himself.
Asked how long you’d been with Denki.
Then the compliments became… more personal.
“You have a beautiful smile.”
“I can see why Denki fell for you.”
“I’d say he’s the lucky one.”
“I think we’re both lucky.”
You tried to end the conversation.
“It was nice meeting you.”
“I should find my Husband.”
Every time you politely excused yourself, another topic appeared.
You were beginning to feel trapped.
You shifted your weight, subtly taking a small step backward.
“So…” you said with another polite smile. “I really should get going.”
The hero smiled just as pleasantly.
“Oh, he’ll survive another minute.”
Your smile didn’t quite reach your eyes this time.
“I’d still like to find him.”
“You know,” he continued, “I always thought Kaminari got unbelievably lucky.”
You let out a small laugh.
“I think I’m the lucky one.”
“I don’t know about that.”
He wasn’t being friendly.
You kept your composure, careful not to draw attention from the nearby reporters.
“I’m very happy with my Husband.”
“And that’s not changing.”
“I wasn’t asking you to.”
“But you are making me uncomfortable.”
For the first time all evening, his confident smile faltered.
You chose your words carefully.
“But I’ve tried ending this conversation a few times.”
A flicker of embarrassment crossed his face…
Only to disappear just as quickly.
“I guess I was hoping you’d give me a chance.”
Across the ballroom, Denki had stopped walking altogether.
He couldn’t hear every word.
The polite smile that never quite reached your eyes.
The way you kept glancing toward the crowd.
Every time you moved away…
The other hero closed the distance again.
Denki rubbed the back of his neck.
Maybe he should go over there.
But what if he was wrong?
What if he interrupted an innocent conversation?
He hated feeling insecure.
Because you’d never once given him a reason to doubt you.
But she smiles at everyone.
He watched you try to leave again.
Your shoulders dropped almost imperceptibly.
That tiny movement settled everything in Denki’s mind.
It wasn’t about jealousy anymore.
And you shouldn’t have to keep asking.
You spotted him before he reached you.
Relief immediately softened your expression.
You almost never used that tone unless you were genuinely glad to see him.
“There you are!” he said brightly, slipping effortlessly into the conversation. “I’ve been looking everywhere.”
“I was looking for you too.”
He moved to your side naturally, brushing his shoulder against yours.
Without thinking, your hand found his sleeve.
“Oh,” the hero said with an awkward laugh. “Sorry, I didn’t realize I was stealing your wife.”
“We were just talking,” the hero continued.
“We were getting to know each other.”
There was no accusation in his tone.
Denki looked down at you first.
“Did he make you uncomfortable?”
You hesitated for only a second.
Denki’s smile disappeared.
He looked back at the other hero.
“You should’ve stopped the first time she tried to leave.”
Denki interrupted gently.
“But she kept saying she wanted to find me.”
“She even told you she wasn’t interested.”
“You don’t have to be rude to ignore someone’s boundaries.”
They sounded disappointed.
The hero lowered his eyes.
This time, it felt genuine.
He offered Denki a small nod before quietly walking away.
The second he disappeared into the crowd…
Denki immediately turned toward you.
“You should’ve come and found me.”
“I just… didn’t want to interrupt your photos.”
“You thought pictures were more important than you?”
“I just didn’t want to be difficult.”
He stared at you for a second before gently taking both of your hands.
“You could never be difficult.”
He squeezed your fingers.
“If you’re uncomfortable…”
“I want you to interrupt me.”
“I don’t care if I’m live on television.”
“I don’t care if I’m talking to the number one hero.”
“I don’t care if I’m accepting an award.”
Your eyes stung unexpectedly.
He laughed quietly, almost at himself.
“I spent the last five minutes convincing myself I was just imagining things.”
“I thought maybe I was being jealous for no reason.”
“I didn’t want to be that boyfriend.”
“The one who gets upset because someone talks to his girlfriend.”
His answer came without hesitation.
“I trust you completely.”
“I just don’t trust people who think ‘no thanks’ means ‘keep trying.’”
You couldn’t help laughing.
He leaned his forehead against yours, grinning.
“I was a little jealous.”
“I only wanted to find you.”
“You were the only person I was looking for.”
His cheeks warmed instantly.
“…You can’t say stuff like that.”
“’Cause then I forget how to be cool.”
He clutched his chest dramatically.
“…I’m still the guy you came looking for.”
You slipped your hand into his.
His grin returned in full.
He intertwined your fingers with yours before nodding toward the ballroom doors.
“There’s a dessert table with our names on it.”
“I thought you were going to say we’re leaving.”
“Everything’s better after cheesecake.”
Looking at the way his smile lit up again, you couldn’t help but agree.
