Amulet of the god Nefertem

Nefertem is often defined as the god of perfumes but this association is secondary. He was, in fact, first and foremost, the young god of the lotus bud that emerged from the primordial waters, according to the Egyptian myth, and from which the sun was born. Nefertem therefore not only identified with the blue lotus (Nymphaea caerulea) but also with the sun god that emerged from it, and its association with Ra is quite common.

In the texts of the Pyramids it is called “the lotus blossom in front of Ra’s nose”, showing how its association with scents started quite early in time. Its headgear is characteristic of him: a lotus flower with two feathers and counterweights for the necklace.

Yours is the safekeeping of temples, the warding of the gate, O Maahes who is the refuge of the good, the comfort of the oppressed and the abused, maintainer of Ma'at. Yours is the strength of spirit, the endurance of resolve; yours is the might of the many, the will to prevail against evil. O Maahes, friend of the righteous, I honor you.

Memphis Triad

After I did Elephantine Triad I decided to draw other triads from ancient Egypt! My all time favorite goddess is Sekhmet and so it was decided that I’ll draw her family after Elephantina’s family.

I didn’t know how to show Nefertem’s divine powers so I tried to make this effect where he creates parfume from his hands. Anyway, he is smiling cause he was thought to be the most handsome god in Egyptian phanteon. Next to him is his father, Ptah, main god in Memphis and the creator of the world. He created the world by saying words but when I tried to draw something like that it was a huge fail. So decided to draw our planet in his hand. I love this guy, and I’ve read somewhere that ancient Egyptians believed that Ptah was the most friendly god. Sekhmet, his wife, on the other hand wasn’t so friendly, at least towards her enemies. She is Ra’s child and he created her to kill all humans (long myth about her blood thirst- thats why her hands and clothes are soaking with blood). She is the goddess of war, healing and protector of the Pharaoh.

So here you go, the famous Memphis Triad!

Hibis III, p 7 / Plate 3. On this wall of the sanctuary, there’s a sort of line-up of the god Nefertum in various forms. Here you can see two of them: on the left, the god’s symbol, two plumes rising from a lotus; on the right, a lion with the face of the god Bes, on top of a human victim.
