call this is a psa bc i don’t want it to be mistaken as anything as casual as a vague: talking about race is important. racebending, representation, issues of race and media are important.

if you’re going to talk about race a) be prepared for ppl to disagree with you or challenge you; b) don’t turn around and act like a victim and everyone’s dogpiling on you because you’re white; c) listen to what poc or better-informed & educated ppl are actually telling you.

not every race discussion has to be a battleground or an opportunity for someone to cry white tears because they feel like they’re being attacked for knowing less than the actual discussion requires. talking abt race is by its nature, controversial and polarising; you might not always be right. just because an opinion is Your Opinion doesn’t mean it’s automatically free from judgement. you can’t offend people just by having opinions, you offend people by having offensive opinions, there’s a difference. and the Only Reason someone is going to get dragged is if they come out with open ignorance & insensitivity, or if they dismiss these issues and act like their opinion is more important than those that are trying to assert why xyz is harmful and racist or just…… wrong.

when poc or ppl who care about diversity talk about racebending, when we encourage diverse casting and celebrate it and actively try to create more representation and visibility for people that aren’t the millions of white faces that have populated comics for the last century it’s because superhero stories, and any stories of any genre/mythos/media, shouldn’t just belong to white people. these characters are cornerstones of pop culture, they’ve defined what it means to be heroic and good and inspirational for generations of people but superheroism isn’t inherently white. racebending exists to give us the opportunity to introduce some absolutely needed diversity back into marvel comics, or whatever other media. fandom literally exists so we can reimagine and reinvent canon however we want, in whatever way we want, and creating diversity + representation is just another way of participating in the transformative power of fandom.

and honestly god-fucking-forbid poc ppl or asian ppl want to see ourselves reflected in our favorite characters and heroes, god forbid we care so much when it’s literally our culture & our people & our rep. “””cool and edgy””” my fuckin ass
