Steve doesn’t mean to be as oblivious as he is. Some might say he gets distracted easily, sure, and that in itself means that he very rarely has good spatial awareness. Most days, he finds himself knocking into people left and right, a stream of apologies following after him as he does so. So when he bumps into the young woman, he not only drops to his knees to help her pick up belongings, but another stream of apologies follows after him as usual.

“‘m real sorry ‘bout this, m’am,” he starts, almost swears, and then reaches out to help pick up more of her belongings. But then, in the last moment, she seems to scoop everything he already hasn’t grabbed and puts it into her bag. Quite dumbly, he stands back up, stares at her, and then emits a nervous laugh.

Why is he just standing there?

He’s had awkward interactions before. Plenty of times, in fact. But he doesn’t really know what to say right now. After an awkward pause, he clears his throat and says, “’m not good at these - uh. Awkward interactions.” God, is admitting it’s awkward going to make it even more awkward?

“Are you, uh. Y’sure you’re fine? Nothing that you dropped is broken, right?” He eyes the camera for a second, not attuned to the art of photography but appreciating the camera nonetheless. “Is your camera alright? If it’s broken, I’d be happy to pay for its repairs or even get you a new one.”

“ just matty is fine, m’am is a little much for me.” she can feel his eyes on her, just staring — god was she making things awkward? had she offended him? why did this matter? he was just a dude that saved people. her dad was the same way, just without the costume. “a bit of advice for when it comes to awkward situations, never admit how awkward it actually is.” she offers with a shrug, finally snapping out of it. he was just a big dork. why had she been weird about it before? she was more concerned with her camera than she was with herself, so when steve asked her if she was alright, matty is quick to brush his concern off. “i’m fine, it takes a lot more to hurt me.” she couldn’t say the same for her camera. before she even realizes she was doing it, matty grimaces at the state of her camera. the lens has a large crack on it, easily costing a couple hundred dollars to repair it, but she isn’t going to guilt steve into that. she was too proud. “ it’s fine, i need to buy a new lens anyways.”

“It all depends if it’s something you’d never drink then it’s almost the end of the world.” Jason wonders what it must feel like to be young again.

“ well, i hate sugary drinks with a passion and for some reason it taste like they emptied an entire bottle of sweetener into this one.” she held out the aforementioned drink out towards him as if daring him to try. “ i can already feel a sugar buzz from just one sip.”

The mutant hands the wallet over, slipping it into the stranger’s hand. She hopes that it really was hers — but either way she believes in doing the right thing. “It happens to the best of us.” She reassures her, spreading out her wings for a moment, shifting in place nervously.

as soon as the wallet was in her hands, matty stuffs it into her bag and zips it up. there’s no way she’s loosing it again, not when her stomach was growling. “thanks.” she finally mutters, eyes focusing on the other woman’s wings for a moment. “cool wings.” really matty? that’s the first thing that comes to your mind.

Hayden takes a deep breath — oh boy when did he get so emotional? “I’m okay, I swear I’m okay.” He’s silent for a moment. “Alright, maybe not.” He doesn’t really want to get into the details of it though. “You must be good at reading people’s emotions — I try to keep a strong face USUALLY. Some days are better than others is all.”

“ it’s cool if you’re not, i’m not judging you at the moment.” she winks playfully after she speaks to show that she’s only kidding about the last part. “eh, i’ve just got lots of practice with people trying to hide their emotions.” and practice hiding her own. she knows what it looks like, what signs to look for. “ that’s how it goes usually. can’t fault yourself for slipping up every once and a while. shit happens and sometimes it’s not so easy.”

she’s all riled up now and there’s no stopping her. “ stupid thugs think they can threaten my bodega lady and smash her shit, then someone should smash something important to them. ” a firm believer in don’t dish out what you can’t handle in return, matty was just itching to make them pay. “or we can pop some tires off of their cars, i know where they like to park ‘em.”

“If you’re sure.” Kon might just be used to protecting everyone, but he leans against the wall watching as she climbs the ladder. It begins to wobble, and he’s across the room in the blink of an eye with a hand on it to stabilize it. “Still got it?”

“ i’m sure. ” she starts to say until she realizes the ladder isn’t as stable as she first thought. the gust of air goes unnoticed at first as matty tightly grips onto the ladder preparing herself for the worst — until it just stops. his voice pulled her out of her mild panic, face warming and heart pounding in her chest. “ yup. piece of cake. ” was all she could spit out as she finally grabbed the book. as she made her way down the ladder she tried to play it cool still ( if she didn’t acknowledge it then it didn’t happen right ?) , but the voice in the back of her mind couldn’t let her get away with that completely. — having claire temple as one of her mothers was a blessing and a curse. “ thanks... i mean i definitely had it, but the back up was appreciated. ”

“ did you want to get food? ” she can’t blame him for thinking the way he did — after all, she shoves all of her negative thoughts into the back of her mind instead of dealing with them. focus on him, not yourself matty. “ let’s start walking towards walking towards the park and we can figure shit out on the way. ”
