Also, the story is romantic as hell. Even homophobic Ottawa residents have to begrudgingly admit that (although they don’t enjoy doing so). Ilya won a Stanley Cup with Boston, and probably had a good shot at another one. But he loved local boy Shane Hollander more than he loved the idea of winning another Cup ring.

So he moved to goddamn Ottawa and their terrible team to be closer to Shane. Potentially tanking his career. The rebuild took a while, but eventually fans’ patience was rewarded and Ilya led their terrible team to the playoffs. And then he brought Shane home!

Ottawa fans have been dreaming about Shane coming to his hometown team since he was sixteen. Fans of the other 29 teams said they were delusional. And now look! No wonder the Canadian Tire Centre is chanting his name in the home opener.
