She gratefully took his hand and pulled herself up. With a slightly pink face, she brushed off her skirt and gave him a grateful smile. “Yes, I suppose I should. I was just busy thinking about something else and my gaze was elsewhere. Thank you for helping me up.”

He gave her a slight nod as she thanked him for helping her up. More than anyone Jack understood what it was like to be thinking about something else. Even the moments before their collision his mind had been occupied on something other than where he was going. “and what was it you were thinking about?”

For a twenty-six year old you would think that Zach would have proper dinners every night since he was older and wiser and knew about nutrition and would make adult decisions. But here he was standing in the middle of the street gnawing on a candy cane, a slushie in his other hand and completely void of the reason to why he was out here in the first place - which for the record was to get dinner.

Zach lost his train of thought when he heard muttering. Convinced he was either hearing things or all that sugar had finally went to his head, he looked around and noticed Jack. “Halloween whispers?” he chimed in after taking a sip of his slush with a smirk on his face.

“Shit, Zach” Jack looked over at the younger male, “are you trying to give me a heart attack?” he asked, eyeing the slush for a moment. “but yes, Halloween whispers” he nodded, taking the cup from him and taking a sip, his face scrunching at the taste, before handing it back to him “What in Samhain’s name flavor is that?”

Sometimes Anita forgot how beautiful her home was, how much she loved it. She had left the library and was walking through the streets, searching for a place to eat. Maybe she’d try that Chinese food place she always walked past, or maybe try that new pizza place that opened up. Her phone buzzed with a text and she quickly pulled it out of her bag. It was just a funny picture from her sister, encouraging her to get out and do something exciting. Anita rolled her eyes and bumped straight into someone, falling to the pavement. As she rubbed at her behind, she wondered if that counted. “Ouch, I’m sorry. I wasn’t looking where I was going. Are you alright?” She asked the person she bumped into.

“No, no it’s okay” Jack said, feeling the other bump him, jolting him out of his thoughts. Noticing her current position on the ground he extended a hand out to help her up. “You should probably pay attention to where you’re going next time though.”

Within all the mess of what happened with her father, and hanging out with friends she was severely, severely behind in work with Jack and the store. She felt awful she knew she would have to work doubles to even get everything right in the places of the store that needed done. She bit her lip and raced to the store seeing Jack leaving she gingerly, no pun intended, because of her slightly red tint to her hair but nevertheless she walked over to Jack. “Uh oh, you’re cursing, that’s never a good sign.” she said softly “what happened Jack?” she said clutching her satchel on her shoulder.

“The internet’s out” he looked over, the sound of annoyance at this inconvenience in his voice. “I couldn’t order food, so now I have to go get it. It’s completely interrupting my flow of getting things started for Halloween this year.”

Rachel was finally making her way home after a trying day of choosing the perfect paint for her next project, and spending a considerable time talking about her project with Sally. Her parents had been trying to a little more lenient on her curfew lately, to her joy, and as seemed to be a usual occurrence she had went for a walk before she had to be home for supper. It wasn’t a scenic route by anyone’s eyes but hers, because she wanted to see what the storefronts would look like when they were closing up for the evening.

She hummed as she walked, but a nearby voice silenced her and she stopped to listen. (Half in panic, half in curiosity.) The man seemed familiar, but she didn’t know him by name. And– he was alone, talking to himself as he walked?

Hey, that man thinks out loud too. Like me! I knew it wasn’t weird. Rachel thought, and shook off a smug smile.

Rachel watched him pass, and tried to listen to what he was saying to himself. But that felt rude. Incredibly rude. And intrusive. And that wasn’t good. That was bad. But she was sure she heard something about a display, or creative ideas, or something like that and her interest could no longer be contained. She thought maybe, because this man was talking out loud to himself, that he just needed someone to tell his ideas to. And she could totally listen! And it might help. It helped her, and for a very long time she had wished to have listening ears.

“Excuse me!” Rachel called meekly, much less confident than she had hoped, but still full of bright and cheery enthusiasm.

Continuing to mutter to himself he started to reach in his pocket for his cigarettes, maybe they would help focus his mind long enough for him to focus on one thing. Much to his dismay he had left them among his other things by his laptop. He came to the end of the sidewalk, waiting for a series of cars to go through the stop sign.

As he was readying to cross his thoughts were interrupted. “Yes?” he blinked, looking over to see a strange girl next to him now. “Is there something I can help you with?”

Rosalie had a habit of showing up places after they were closed and expected to be let in. Jack’s place was no exception. In fact, she had been on her way there now when she saw him at the other end of the street, “Oh, Jack!” heels making a satisfying clicking sound as she made her way down the sidewalk to greet him. No how are you, no funny seeing you here, there was no time. “I’m so glad I ran into you. I need your brain.” She had two large shopping bags on either arm, along with a purse that she now reached into, “This Halloween I’m throwing my anual ball again at Wonderland.” pulling out her phone to pull up her Pinterest, “Like last year the theme must have something to do with our color scheme: red, pink and white. There’ll be a costume contest of course – What’s your email I’ll add you to my google drive with all the plans. – Oh!” She had almost forgotten, reaching into one of the bags and tossing him a sample bottle of Wonderland Vodka, “Now this is still in development but it’s called Poison Apple. You’ll need to tell me what you think I plan to release it on the night. Of course we’ll be serving bloody mary’s, finger food, and all that. Oh and then of course there’s the question of my costume which I’ll need help with as well. Any questions?”

Jack had been lost in his thought that he hadn’t taken note of Rosalie calling his name. In fact, it wasn’t until she was standing next to him that he even noticed any of his surroundings at all. He’d caught about half the words, but he it was enough to know what she was going on about. “Right. Right” he muttered, nodding a long a little. His hand moved back through his hair, as he gave her his business email, his personal email only belonged to a select few. The toss surprised him, but he managed to successfully catch the bottle of the sample vodka. “I will get back to you on that” he nodded, stuffing it into his coat pocket. “What kind of theme are you looking for? Are you thinking fantasy-Halloween? Scary? Something else?”

Jack had lost track of the last time he’d left the store. The closer it got to Halloween the more he had to prepare for. Halloween was always the biggest holiday for decorating the store, and as he’d finished on getting the final touches up for the current month, a full on Jurassic Park experience, he’d been planning on this years Halloween. So, far he was working on a Beetlejuice theme, though he still wasn’t entirely sold that THIS was the way to go this coming season.

It was after hours and Jack was getting ready to order food when his internet went out. “Fuck” he muttered to himself, gathering his things and stepping out. He locked the door to the store, before heading out towards somewhere to eat, talking aloud to himself about the display ideas.

Who would say no to a drink

Well as James understood, Peter and Tina were attending a party which led to him having a night off. From what he had heard this new bar seemed promising, and it was enough for adults to mingle with one another. Well, James simply hoped he wouldn’t end up bored.

“I’d like something strong, please. And what can I get you, the drink is on me.”

There were talks of parties in the town tonight, which meant that most of the businesses shut down slightly early for the day. Jack had been among them, though much of his time after was still spent at the store. He’d been working on designs for the next month’s display. The current one had been fashioned after the summer camps of 1980s slasher films. After he’d finished up, Jack’s original plan had been to go home, but the call for a nice drink was stronger, and he soon found himself at the bar.

“Whatever’s on tap” he said, not really being much of a drinker of hard liquor, though he did enjoy a good beer.

Diana stood at the counter of her shop, a smile on her lips as a customer came up to the counter. Just as she was about to greet them and start checking them out, her phone started ringing. Normally she wouldn’t answer it, however it was her daughter. It was the 3rd time in the last 30 minutes, and she figured she might as well get it so they would leave her alone. “I’m so sorry, I’ll be with you in just a moment.” She said with a pleading smile, hoping that they wouldn’t mind too much or they themselves had kids and understood. “Hello?” She answered quickly and quietly as she walked away a little. “No, I told you yesterday that your brother was making dinner tonight… I don’t care if you don’t like it , Marie, you’re going to eat it.. Yes, I did pick it, so either you’re going to eat it or you’ll just have to find something else in the fridge that isn’t set up for another meal.. Okay, I have to get back to work, I love you.” She sighed softly as she closed the phone and turned back to the person waiting there. “I am so sorry about that. Let me give you a 10% discount for having to wait for me.”

Jack was still looking at some of the options in the bakery case when Diana had apologized and excused herself to take a call. Manners like these were ones Sally often had to remind him to work on at the store. “Kids?” he asked as she’d returned to the counter, unable to help but overhear some of the conversation. “I’m not even sure what I want” he admitted “I’m buying some for my employee. What would you suggest?”
