"developing country" is not a great term but if people insist on using it i demand we also use "undeveloping country." for example I'm from the u.s. and my country is currently in a state of undevelopment
There is a term for this politically! It's "backsliding"
i adore being confronted with the staggering breadth of what individual people can get obsessed with. there's nothing better than having That One Mutual with an advanced degree in ancient greek tragedy who writes minecraft youtube fanfiction to remind you that anyone can love anything

me every time i take a sip of my cappuccino: do they know it's called cappuccino because the color is similar to the sackcloth worn by capuchin friars (cappuccini). do they know capuchin friars got their name from the hood (cappuccio) they wear. do they know cappuccino is a double diminutive as it comes from capo ('robe') + uccio = cappuccio ('hood' but literally 'little robe') + ino = cappuccino ('tiny hood' but literally 'tiny little robe'). do they know

Study tips from a mid student;
This is geared towards research students mainly⦠but feel free to try out if u want regardless!
Make a gantt chart beginning of ur research semester. This is absolutely lifesaver⦠for sure there will be like a 1000 versions of ur thesis but having a rough timeline gives u the push and when u r down in the dumps u can actually visualise ur progress so far⦠which motivates me.
There will be like a lot of versions and corrections and drafts of everything u do. Starting with lit review . Iād highly suggest using one note and keeping track of every piece of article u r studying⦠u can arrange them according to themes when u r still looking for a topic⦠this way after 3 months of reading lit u wont feel like u r losing ur mind ⦠because on paper u have nothing to showā¦
On a similar note , Iād suggest use mendeley to organise papers. U can annotate them there and login from multiple places like lab computer or ur pc etc. this way u know which ones u have marked and read and where to find what.
Donāt use ai for lit review ⦠itās a massive waste of time and gets u confused. Instead just start reading and u will get there ⦠u donāt have to read every paper but skim through abstract and findings and u will know what to do next
Donāt delete any work ever⦠like from the first draft of ur lit review to the last draft of ur thesis ⦠keep them all neatly in a folder⦠make sure to copy it in multiple places so u wonāt lose it in case of emergency
Print out key papers u r using to build ur research around ⦠like maybe 10 or 15 of them ⦠this will give u a boost cuz for once u donāt have to sit in front of a screenā¦
Actually have a conversation with ur sv⦠talk to him like u r a newborn because we all r⦠in research world. Also make sure u communicate ur timeline with him very clearly⦠like when u want to complete what ⦠because they r busy people and u donāt want to be stuck and frustrated waiting for their feedback⦠so at least make some key milestones clear to him and keep it in written document so u can refer back if he forgets.
Now when it comes to ur actual research and experiment or simulation, always start early⦠these things take forever and u will eventually have unexpected problems⦠so always start early ⦠play around and see what happens ā¦
Have some hobbies outside of ur research⦠it gets more difficult as time goes on⦠but plz escape once in a while to refresh ur brain
Academia doesnāt pay nearly enough to survive but I donāt care if u have to ask for help never compromise on nutritionā¦
Iāve seen so many people living in lab and surviving on ramen ⦠ur body will eventually fail u⦠so donāt be frugal about nutrition⦠brain doesnāt work if itās not healthy⦠and empty stomach puts u in a funk
When the inevitable doom hits about where this is all going or if ur research is worth the time and effort ⦠talk to ur peers ⦠always or ur sv even⦠they r there on the same boat and they will helpā¦
Also donāt work 24/7 in ur lab⦠move around⦠itās a massive boost for motivationā¦
work at most 7 -8 hrs a day ⦠then take rest ⦠because after that I feel like I donāt function well and itās just dragging my brain ā¦
Treat urself after a milestone like publishing a paper or completing a chapter⦠u totally deserve it .. and it is positive reinforcement!
I wonāt pretend Iām a 4.0 gpa student cuz Iām not ⦠but these things I wish someone told me when I was starting grad school and I hope it can help u⦠so all the best š

quite foggy this morning but lots of squirrels out. I got myself a bagel, also I found this new pomodoro timer/focus website called "flocus". I mostly like it because they have a bunch of pretty backgrounds and you can customize the timer/break times

my trick for getting through grad school is learning to navigate the quadrants with all their nuances
do you have any advice for reading journal papers? sometimes the material is so dense I find them difficult to read!
some of these coincide with general study tips but here's a list from my experience:
Printing out papersāI tried using a computer and it just doesn't work for me
Reading in the order of abstractāintroductionāconclusionāresults/discussionāmethods. Reading the conclusion towards the beginning helps me connect things more easily
Having a "scrap" notebook to just jot down thoughtsāIt can be important stuff or just figuring out basic concepts or doodling. Allowing my brain to wander helps me process what I'm reading. Nothing needs to be neat or organized since I write up notes after anyways
Having a "scrap" notes doc for citations or links with brief descriptions of what it is. You can also use this to copy/paste important quotes and put a link/pg #. I get overwhelmed having too many tabs openāif you are not reading for a specific research project this is not usually necessary and can be too much if you are just starting to read journal papers
I recommend looking up things you are unsure of, even if they seem elementaryāhowever if it's taking too long, just put a question mark and come back to it... Its a process to know your limits
Having a pomodoro-like timerāmine is set to 32m, with 8-16m breaks. Reading continuously makes it harder (at least for me). Sometimes I'll put it down and restart the next day if it feels like a bunch of jumble
Changing environment, being in public study spaces (e.g. library) helps me focus and other people studying puts pressure on me to not constantly check my phone
Check if your school has a journal club in your subject area. It can seem like a lot at first but it exposes you to the language and eventually you'll be able to connect the dots. Also don't be afraid to ask questions, journal clubs are specifically made for discussion of papers!
You can also ask questions to professors in that field, whether in class or by email (although a lot of professors tend to not be great at answering emails)
Trying to do too many things at once will overwhelm me so its mostly me finding ways to organize my brain. It's going to be different for everyone but hopefully some of these helps!
My current reading is centered around the same topic so I started with an overview paper (like a "review" paper) then I started reading more specific papers. Reading about the same topic goes faster since you are familiar with the language / concepts.
I will say some physicist (or some STEM people) are not... the greatest writers so it does make it a little bit more difficult to read. It's okay if it takes you a few days to read a paper, as with most things you'll get better/faster with practice.
Day 8 of Romanticizing My Dissertation Writing Process
A weekend at home with the parents ā¦
Personal:
Brushed, showered, washed my hair, did my am and pm skincare
Supported a friendās bakery pop-up
Did my endless laundry
Professional:
Talked with a friend who finished their PhD last year about my timeline and she said she wrote her whole dissertation (once the data analysis was done) in 3 months, she said I had more than enough time and not to worry, and she gave me a bunch of actionable advice such as:
Email my writing updates to myself all the time so I donāt risk being one mistake or server crash from losing everything
Front load the review work with my committee by having a meeting with each member so they give me their feedback and advice before the defense
Sit down with my advisor and walk through all the data analysis so not only do I know itās write but he knows exactly what I did ahead of time and canāt give me major changes at the very end
reblog to give the person you reblogged this from a fucking break
writers, this is a sign for you to write more gay sex
