The best way to get good at sewing quickly is to do patterns way out of your skill range. I'm not talking about making your wedding dress the first time you see a machine, but taking on harder projects with the understanding they might not turn out well is like, how ya learn buds.

This is actually incredible advice for how to learn anything. Give yourself a goal way out of your league and just work on it till you get it. You may never reach the goal, and that is entirely alright, but even by trying to work it out you're expanding your skills!
