Dear Yates and Heyman, it would be cool if you guys read the books and not a summary of them, before giving opinions about ANY Harry Potter character.
Grindelwald was expelled from Durmstrang for being too evil. Let me say it again…Durmstrang, a school that is known for teaching dark magic, thought Grindelwald was too much to handle. Voldemort on the other hand was praised as the greatest wizard to ever come from Hogwarts, with everyone throwing him awards and contacts. Keep in mind Riddle opened the Chamber of Secrets and killed a student, but no one but Dumbeldore has an inkling it was him.
He also getting angry at his best friend’s brother and using the cruciatus curse on him, then getting into a three way duel that results in Ariana’s death and he lost Dumbledore’s support.
When interrogating Newt as Graves he questions him about working for Grindelwald’s cause and calls the Obscurus useless without the host which clues Newt in on who he really is.
And finally his actions in 1945 would eventually force Dumbledore to confront him which ended in him losing the Elder Wand and getting locked up in his own prison for the rest of his life.

Tom knew how to charm and manipulate everyone (except Dumbledore, because he saw his true nature). His charm of all the teachers, of the wizarding community, of Hepzibah Smith, was really well done. He managed to manipulate his followers since Hogwarts. They saw him as their leader and they admired him.
When discussing Voldemort with Harry he mentions that many of his Death Eaters claim that they are in his confidence, that they alone are close to him, even understand him but that they are deluded and that Harry’s privileged insight into Voldemort’s world is a gift any Death Eater would kill to posses.

Voldemort did not only use fear or force, he was able to gain the support of the Pure Bloods and Half Bloods who hated their Muggle heritage by promoting Pure Blood supremacy which they found to be very appealing, and was able to sway the Dementors, Giants and Werewolves who were outcasts of wizard society by offering them what they desired most. He could have amassed an army without power simply on manipulation alone. I don’t remember that he threatened them.
They were hard fanatics and they saw Voldemort as a God (like Bellatrix or Crouch). Many of them were scared of him? sure, because this was one of Voldemort’s goal. But no one would have never dared to betray him (except Snape and Regulus, but they didn’t care to die). Even if he wanted to be feared and he used fear as a weapon, he had to be a great manipulator and a great leader to have a similar army, and it was confirmed by both Dumbledore and Harry.
People need to accept that Grindelwald and Voldemort are two different characters with different stories, methods and goals. Both their followers believed in them for different reasons. But this does not mean that one is better than the other. Both of them, at the end, lost their war.
Just to clarify, i like BOTH Grindelwald and Voldemort. I’m just tired with people who say nonsense, including Yates and Heyman.
