Hey. So i'm writing this on mobile so sorry for the typos. I have been a follower for a while and you always seem so nice so you're the first person I thought I'd go to for advice. I also didn't want to do this off anon because i'm too nervous about attracting attention to my blog from what i'm about to say. Recently I've been getting super upset because of my twitter. I was posting about captain swan, minding my own business and just started getting like two or 3
other acnts telling me i was a horrible person and that my ship was disgusting. The worst part was that someone brought up that I wasn’t okay with SQ because I hated gay people like “Adam and Eddy.” I don’t know if I’m overreacting to the whole situation. I deleted my account but I still see a bunch of hate on my tumblr when I’m on mobile and it reminds me of what happened on twitter and instantly makes my stomach hurt and its ruining the experience for me. I recently came out to my dad and the rest of my family that im pansexual (mostly attracted to females) and they all took it very well but i when i brought this up to one of the blogs they told me that it wasn’t a real sexuality and that lots of CS people use their non heterosexuality as an excuse for being homophobic and dk something about being called homophobic made me feel like my sexuality isn’t legitimate and idk. am i overreacting. i just really don’t know what to do. i want to enjoy CS like everyone else but i dont know how to get the antis out of my head in order to do so.
I’m so sorry that not only your fandom experience, but more importantly your coming to terms with, accepting, and being proud of your sexuality, was so negatively affected by some of the hateful people of this fandom. I’m probably not the best blogger to give advice on this - i’m straight and haven’t been the subject of the kind of accusations you’ve been dealing with. But I do have a few things to say:
What fictional couple you ship doesn’t determine the legitimacy of your status as a LGBT person.
This is a terrible argument that sad and bitter people make to spread pain because they haven’t gotten their way regarding a fictional TV show. On Once Upon a Time Emma is canonically in love with Hook - that is fact. And some try to make the case that the ONLY reason for the story going this way is because the show creators are homophobic. They also try to argue that if you like this ship, rather than THEIR preferred ship, it must be because you too are homophobic.
It’s a ridiculous argument to make of course, and it’s all because they can’t accept that $Q was never the story the writers planned to tell, and that there are many reasons, that have nothing to do with sexuality, for the shows creators to not have written Regina as Emma’s happy ending.
The same goes for fans - they have many reasons for shipping Emma with Hook, and many for NOT shipping her with Regina.
Are there some homophobic CS shippers? Sure. Just as there are some terrible $Qers who feel that it’s ok to make accusations against fellow queer fans and invalidate their identity for the sake of “ship wars”. Luckily neither of those two unfortunate groups exist in large numbers in our fandom. Sadly they do have some of the loudest voices.
If you are pansexual you are pansexual. NOBODY else gets to tell you otherwise anon - especially not strangers on the internet that masquerade as SJWs who are simply seeking to silence your presence in the fandom.
People who try to argue that $Q is not canon because of homophobia are trying to claim that there aren’t any queer people who ship CS or don’t ship $Q - YOUR existence is proof that they are WRONG. Don’t let them drive you our of the fandom and DON’T let them tell you that you are heterosexual, or gross, because you don’t ship what they do.
Shipping a non canon f/f ship on a silly fairytale drama doesn’t give them authority to be gatekeepers to the queer community. Forget about those idiots. What they think of you, or say to you, means NOTHING. Focus on the fact that your family has been accepting of your coming out - that is WONDERFUL!!!!!
