Finally, SKE48’s Matsui Rena is going to graduate from being an idol soon.
As one of SKE48 founder member since 2008, she’s been in the front line, pushing the group along these 7 years.
Rena left a message in “Mae no Meri” single which is on sale right now and take the first step towards acting path.
Before her graduation, she agreed to have an interview with us AKB group news for the last time.
Of course, the other one is Matsui Jurina. This is really the last interview with both of them, including interview with each of them, there will be 6 parts. Please look forward to it.
- You two being on AKB group newspaper cover, this is actually the first time.
J: Same words at the same time!! *laugh*
- Since Rena-san will graduate soon, it wouldn’t be good if we don’t interview both of you. Also, there are many requests from fans that wanted us to do it.
J: Um! Because Wmatsui is best!

- When we look back to the time of first debut, you were just two kids. That made us feel sentimental.
J: We are still kids! Still young!
R: Geez…we are not kids anymore…

- Does this mean you ever had a fight?
J,R: It’s not quite a fight… *laugh in chorus*
R: Eh? We said the same words again.
R: In the past, Jurina can be angry over a little thing.
- Do you remember what’s it about?
R: I think it was “Banzai Venus”, maybe? We had to shoot a scene together. Jurina said “I will stand here only!” I was like “…Ha?” replied her like that. Then, Jurina said “I would look better if I’m standing on this side. So, I will stand here! Just let me!” said with harsh tone. Since she insisted to stand there, I said like “I can stand anywhere, I’m not choosy…” *laugh*
J: Because my hair parted that way so I think standing there would look better.
R: Then just when I thought it was only once, in other scenes, we always argued about standing position. Jurina said “I already told you, right?” and I couldn’t help thinking “No way, you want it to be like this all the time?”
J: I don’t remember that at all *laugh*
R: Though a long time has passed, she’s still like that.
- Rena-san didn’t fight back?
R: I only thought “Eh?” like that.
J: But for Rena-chan, if it’s something she likes, she would never back down.
J: You can call it crazy or something but at that time, I don’t understand a thing. When I ask her “what’s this? What’s that?” she would easily be annoyed. At the Kouhaku, there was a Disney character. I asked “is it a boy or a girl inside?” Rena-chan was angry and said “No way it can be a girl!!”
R: You couldn’t say like this. Micky is a boy! There’s no way a girl can be inside!
J: Then, I asked “What would Disneyland do now? There are two of them?” (two separate Micky(s)) Rena-chan was angry “two is not possible!!!” *laugh*
R: Because he’s the “only” one!!
“Pretending is not a good thing”
- Please describe your relationship.
J: Ummm…”Close friend” that has “friendship from the heart” is not bad.
- As for Rena-san who has only a few friends, do you resist?
R: It’s rather like a family member. People often told me “Jurina Is special one, right?” Of course, we have matched opinion, and went through times together. Just like a moment ago that we said the same words at the same time. *laugh* but for me, I feel like I have a sister. Basically, I feel the same with other members but if I say like this, Jurina might be very angry.
J: Yeah! Because for me, Rena-chan is special. But Rena-chan likes Churi, right?
R: Because Churi is my friend *laugh*
- The balance of you two is so incredible.
R: Although we don’t look at things with the same perspective and though the directions we head are different, but we both have participated in activities with the same thought of how we can achieve our ideal.
J: That’s right. At first, I never thought we would be called “JuriRena” or “WMatsui” for this long. But the ones who think that we are rivals are the fans.
J: We see each other a lot at work and people surrounding kept telling “you guys don’t get along well, do you?” That made me think “We really need to be rivals, right?”
R: Why so? *laugh* But our encounter like this is great. I really think like this from the bottom of my heart.
- As far as you can realize, how did it change compared to the beginning?
J: Our rivalry decreased as the time passed by, except at general election which made me recall the feelings from the beginning. So, as she didn’t nominate this year, I felt so lonely.
R: On the contrary, I think rather than our rivalry decreased, I would say just leave the election be. Nevertheless, SKE48 would never change. When I realized this point, I can tell “This is this and that is that”
- Team shuffle took effect enormously, right?
R: Yeah. When I was in Team S, I always feel the pressure spread out from Jurina. But when I moved to Team E, the feeling’s gone away.
R: In Team S, the photographers always wanted us pairing up. But when we got separated, all surroundings had changed. I became gentler. That’s what I had changed the most.
- At the election backstage, the picture of smiling Rena-san held crying Jurina-san closely got published on Nikkan Sports, too.
J: I didn’t know it got captured.
J: Masana, standing beside, also got cropped out. It looked so pathetic, Masana was sad *laugh*
R: At first, I never thought of being there. I would watch it at the hotel. I just told Jurina “Tomorrow, I will say ‘congrats!!’ to you. So, fighting”

J: I asked “Why are you here?”
R: I never thought Jurina would become like that. When I saw Jurina and Masana walking, I went to talk with them comfortably. Then, Jurina just “Uwaaaaa“ cried out. I never thought I would make her cry, what should I do? Something like that.
J: Rena-chan was like my mom. Because my rank dropped to fifth place, so I was not pleased. - But Rena-san was full with smile.
R: Since she met me, she just “Uwaaaaa” cried out like that. It was funny “she cried hard” *laugh* I think it was very cute. It was like “Prank success!!” But crying non-stop was troubling.
J: In the end, Sae-chan helped me. Also Churi, Kaotan and juniors came to comfort me “Jurina-san, it’s alright” while taking me to press conference.
“Hearing about graduation, it’s hard to breath”
- What do you think about Rena-san graduation announcement?
J: Rena-chan might not intend to tell anyone?
R: I intended to tell 1st gen. But seeing Jurina’s condition after the election, I thought “It’s not the time to tell this” When I was worried about it, Nikkan already got the news.
R: So, I think not telling them is not OK. After hearing the news, that night before it got published, I talked to Jurina on the phone.
J: It’s still OK that she told me before. If she didn’t, I might be very angry. So, I called her immediately
J: It’s like I was gonna out of breath.
R: More sentimental than me.
J: Even though I know she didn’t tell because she was worried about me, I could feel her kindness, but actually, I already have clues about this. Because I am always watching her so I know it from her actions and words. I talked to Masana “Isn’t it(graduation) coming close?” Masana replied “there’s nothing like that for now” *laugh*
R: Not long before then, Masana asked me “When will you graduate?” I felt that “so, they can feel it, huh?” Although the date was already set, but because “no one said OK” so I just answered her lightly.
J: Then, Masana came and talked to me happily “Rena said she will not graduate soon” but I felt “it might be soon…”
R: And Masana got angry “you lied to me, you are the worst!” *laugh*

- How do you want the last concert to be?
J: “Sekai ga naiteru nara” has never been performed live once. I want to perform this song. There’s also dialogue between me and Rena-chan. And also “1234 Yoroshiku”…
R: We already have performed this song.
R: This also got performed
J: It’s not like that! Just the two of us, we both have not performed together recently. If it’s not with Rena-chan, it’s not quite compatible with me. Because I don’t have to be worried about her (dancing)

- The concert at Toyota stadium will be held for 2 days, right?
J: That’s great! That’s great! We can do whatever we want. Wanna perform every song?
R: It would be OK to do whatever we want. For me to be able to sing “Kareha no Station” and graduation solo song is enough. Overall, just to be able to have fun with members and fans is enough.

J: …I would have graduated since the beginning.
R: Eh? Since the beginning?
- There will be no one to encourage you to fight, right?
J: I would want to be an ordinary girl. Most of members who are at my age chose to continue their education so they graduated.
R: I think without Jurina, there would be no one to encourage me to improve. But not as rivals because no matter what Jurina’s entity would never be shaken. So, I always think of how I can express myself to step forward.
- What about Rena-san, if there were no Jurina…
R: Being silent, please don’t be mistaken that I “have no idea at all” *laugh* But, I just don’t understand why people around me always look for “JuriRena” or “WMatsui” Maybe, because it’s easy to remember, it draws people’s attention…because everyone attaches to this point, I think “What should I do, being by myself?” because I always think Jurina is Jurina, me is me. It just that Jurina is always beside me…but now, attachment to this point is kinda fading away
“Please don’t call it the last”
- It’s an honor having you both interviewed for the last time.
J: Mou! Please don’t say the last! *sob*
J: Mou! It make me sad! This is too bad. Right now, if someone is being kind to me just a bit, I will love them.
- Rena-san is really wicked
R: Maa…but Jurina will still love me.
J: I feel that most of SKE48 songs mention about me and Rena-chan. Even though it’s a love song, but I feel “Isn’t it about me and Rena-chan?”
J: For a graduating member, this is the first time I feel like this.
J: And you said you will go for a meal privately together with me, right? I still believe that.
R: I will. Recently, I unexpectedly became able to eat with other people.
J: That’s great! Definitely have to go!! Even if Rena-chan graduated, “JuriRena” will live forever
R: But I may push you out a bit.

J: It was when we were waiting for Rena-chan and held a party. We prepared and decorated by ourselves. - What about memories with Rena-san in Okinawa?

- Memories with other members?
J: Because it was Okinawa, so everyone was like “the seaaaaa!!” Only me, secluded myself lonelily *laugh* Kept thinking “I want to meet Rena-chan” and decorated this and that. Yuasa-san came to me “let me do it, too” and helped. I couldn’t help crying and thought “This shot is really weird” *laugh*
- Having Yuasa-san back in SKE now might be destiny?
J: That’s right. Because we both know Rena-chan since the beginning. But while we were decorating quietly, a member suddenly held me from behind.
J: Nao-chan. She said “Jurina-san, it’s alright! Please don’t endure it alone” We both had been in AKB48 together. We also told each other “let’s try our best for SKE”
- Talking about this, on “Ongaku no Hi” in July, Furuhata-san was also substitute at the front (substitute for Rara) I was impressed.
J: Though we are at the same age but she is so mature. She understands everyone’s feeling. When I realized this, she was already by my side. She tries hard, really has SKE style.
- Juniors could gain this kind of awareness. They may bring the change to the group.
J: Everyone is worth the trust, Churi and Aya-chan,too. When I was upset because I got 5th place at the election, Aya-chan said to me “For SKE, Jurina-san is always number 1”
- With Rena-san’s graduation, it could be for Jurina-san to step forward.
J: Just being SKE is relieving. Whenever I come back, everyone will always be kind, no rivalry. The only senior is Sae-chan. When I was in AKB, I always “show them SKE strength!” demonstrate the power like that. Up till now, SKE never felt this crisis before. So, when Rena-chan’s not here anymore, it’d feel like another layer of skin got peeled off.
- How do you want Rena-san and SKE relationship happens to be?
J: I want her to look at us from audience perspective. Like someone who can understand the inside just by looking from the outside. I want her to be Theatre Manager *laugh* and come to see our live often.
- How about SKE48 from now on?
J: I think SKE now is strongest. I’m so optimistic. I can proudly say that. In the past, I got concurrency, so I couldn’t say it out loud. But now, I’m really confident. I want everyone to look at SKE and hope that you will come to Toyota Stadium.
