how i think byler endgame will play out

this is my theory of how byler is going to become canon in s5. I feel like I have a pretty solid idea of how everything is going to go down and I wanted to write it all out so that if I'm right I can look back on this and feel vindicated lmao.

so, as of right now we have three major elements that we know are going to play a hand in the culmination of their arc.

the painting (and "friends don't lie")

the letter

the painting

the painting is pretty obvious and we've already talked about it endlessly, so doesn't really need explanation. but after this leak came out... "friends don't lie" is coming back (which I predicted in my s5 bingo btw)!! and I'm thinking this time it's going to be directly related to the painting/will hiding his feelings for mike. I think it'll either be said by mike to will during their big confrontation or by el to will because she knows what's going on.

the letter

we also know that this letter that was leaked by the writers is something significant. as much as I love the "love, mike" theories, I can't help but get the sense it was written by will to give to mike along with the painting. the "sorry I couldn't get it done" sounds like he's apologizing for not finishing it sooner. I think he was planning to give it to him as a sort of indirect confession, maybe? but then at the airport when he thought things had changed between them he second guessed himself, and then when he did decide to eventually give mike the painting, it was under the pretence of being from el, so he forgot about the letter entirely.

I think this might be how mike discovers the painting lie, or at least part of it. maybe he comes across it accidentally when it falls out of will's backpack or something or he sees it lying around (which is a possibility if they're living together). it's also possible that will gives it to him directly, but I have a harder time believing he would do that. either way, reading the letter would make everything click into place--the fact that the painting was never from el, and everything will said to him in the van was coming from him, not el.

rain fight 2.0

lastly, we're getting another "angsty, emotional, tense" byler rain fight!! since we also know that the only episode shawn levy is directing is chapter 6: escape from camazotz (wow the implications), we can assume that it's happening in that episode, which is near the end of the season and when things are finally coming to a head. it's something big. this is when mike is going to confront will about the painting, the letter, and his feelings, and when everything is going to be let out in the open!

I'm assuming that by this time mike will have already been working out his own confused feelings for will, his sexuality, etc. and has just been holding it back, letting it build and build, and this is when it all kind of explodes into an outburst of emotion. since this is so close to the end of the season, it has me believing it could possibly also be the first kiss scene?? which would literally kill me. an arguing, frustrated confession of feelings on both sides that leads to a kiss in the rain??? plan my funeral

but yeah, that's how I think it's going to happen. i'm going to look back on this when the season's out and see how much I was right about 🤞
