UAF Campus - in front of Hardwood Hall
Off of Chena Hot Springs Rd., Alaksa
UAF Trail System:
Trails range from 0.5-10 miles
Main entrance at UAF ski hut on West Ridge of campus
Has a lot of signage
Trails loop back and connect
Some trails are groomed during winter
Close to the Large Animal Research Station and Georgeson Botanical Gardens
Smith Lake is located in the woods to the NW
For a short loop you can hike Karl Reishus Loop
Moose are common
Some of the trails here are Ester Dome Inner Loop, Skarland, Baseline Trail, Powerline Trail, Ballaine Lake Trail, etc.

Wickersham Dome Trail: Easy - Moderate
Trail is a 7 mile out and back trail
Location: Drive 28 mi. on Elliott Hwy. and look for signs, mile 27.7
Trailhead is the starting point for the Summit Trail and 5 mi. Ski Loop
Rocky terrain, steep sections, forest, wet during summer
Mostly groomed during winter
Offers bouldering at the top, berry picking, views of the White Mountains, and a lot of marmots near windshelter
Can continue on Summit Trail for camping
Can turn left at trail junction for shelter, Summit Trail shelter 8 mi. from starting point to W. Dome

Murphy Dome - Easy
11 mile trail
Location: Murphy Dome Rd, 20 miles outside of Fairbanks, AK
2930 ft. elevation
Consists of 3 trails
1 trail continues down to Chatanika River, 2nd trail you can drive to the summit
At the top there’s low vegetation making it a good place to view the Northern Lights
Also, good for berry picking, stargazing, watching sunsets, and ATV riding

Butte Creek Trail: Easy
11 mile trail
Elevation 2425 ft.
Runs from Susitna River to Snodgrass Lake
Trail has active mines and follows an old mining trail
Has lakes, streams, rivers, lakes, valleys, and Rusty Hill
A good spot to go fishing
Possible to spot moose, caribou, bears, fish, etc.

Castner Glacier Ice Caves: Easy to Difficult
Location: Mile 217.3 Richardson Hwy, Castner Creek - Delta Mountains of the Alaska Range - Begins at Castner Creek
Has ice caves at the toe
Trail route can be used to access many other trails including Silvertip
Many crevasses, it’s good to be knowledgeable in crevasses rescue
Possible risk of avalanches, rock fall, and glacier lakes filling the tunnels

Angel Rock Trail: Near Fairbanks, AK
3 mile loop hike
Marked trail, flat ground
Can get icy during winter
Best to hike trail May-September
Starts off steep for roughly 0.4 miles
Has open tundra sections that give view of Chena Hills
Has a spot to rock climb, river walk through boreal forest, and granite towers at the top of climb
Can overnight hike or go into springs
Popular on the weekends and in summer
Turn left at trail junction to turn back or can turn right to continue on

Savage River Day Hike: Moderate
2 mile loop hike
Located in Denali National Park, Alaska
Trail begins at Savage River parking lot
Flat elevated trail, steep with loose footing
Best hiking May-December
Can be icy on the East side of loop February-May
Possible to see dall sheep and caribou
At the end of the trail you can keep going for Mt. Margaret

Birch Hill White Bear: Moderate
Trail type: Loop
Trail is 6.1 miles long
Located in Fort Wainwright, AK
Has signs for cutoffs for those not wanting to finish the entire loop

Chena Dome Backpack Trail: Moderate - Central AK
29 miles long
Trail starts at mile 50.5 on Chena Hot Springs Road
Dome at 4,421 ft. elevation
The hikes high point is 10 mi from trailhead
Trail center at mile 17
Full trail usually take 2-4 days to complete
8.5 miles in has an old military aircraft wreckage from the 1850′s

Granite Tors Trail: Difficult
Trail begins at mile 39.5 Chena Hot Springs Road, Alaska
15 mile or 2 miles loop
2900 ft. elevation
Provides views or Granite Tors formed 70-90 million years ago
