people who use the queue function fill a necessary role in the tumblr ecosystem. they keep posts alive. if u miss a post bc ur entire mutualcule was reblogging it from each other in a 30min span and u were offline, the queue mutual provides u an opportunity to see that post again in 1-8 business days. they put posts in stasis in little cryogenic freezers for u to discover and enjoy later. everyone thank their queue mutuals right now

Hubble Reaches New Milestone in Mystery of Universe's Expansion Rate

Completing a nearly 30-year marathon, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has calibrated more than 40 "milepost markers" of space and time to help

The gist of it, for us non-physicists, is that the speed at which the universe is expanding does not make sense with our current understanding of physics. The physics as we grasp them say it should be going 67 units, and new measurements provided by the Hubble telescope show that it's going 10% faster than that, at 73 units.

This has physicists all hopped up because scientists love New Weird Mysteries. Apparently this is very cool, for reasons I cannot possibly hope to understand. Nevertheless, physicists are usually pretty good at, y'know, physics. So, unravelling the disconnect between our math and our new measurements stands to really improve our understanding of the universe!

I want a home mostly just to welcome people into it. There will be bowls of candy for guests, and the cookie jar is full. I’ll always say “I was just about to make a coffee/tea/cocoa, would you like one?” when somebody walks in. There’s lemonade and iced tea made fresh on hot days. Once it hits That Hour and they start saying they really should be going, I’ll remind them that the futon is always open, and I’m making cinnamon rolls tomorrow. There’s champagne and sparkling juice hidden on a high shelf just in case somebody announces their engagement or their pregnancy or their new job while they’re here. There is an extra chair in the living room, at the table, and on the deck, and it’s for you. I want to be able to say “if you’re ever in trouble, come to me.”
