A Dog Doesn't Know Better, 2025
Based off of something I was taught in catholic school growing up. Basically, to follow God you have to deny yourself earthly pleasures, etc. This can be hard and seem like your denying yourself things that make you happy or seem to not be that harmful. However, God knows better. We were taught to imagine ourselves like dogs. A dog might want to eat a chocolate bar but the owner will deny it. The dog doesn't understand why it can't have it and is sad but the owner knows that the dog would die if it ate it. We're dogs and God is the owner who knows better.
Idk i found it to be a strange analogy loll That we're dogs in comparison to God and if we don't understand why something is considered a sin it doesn't matter we just have to obey and trust that God knows better. I never really liked blind obedience. I questioned everything and needed solid answers so it never sat well with me.
So, in this piece an angel is denying a demon the holy blood of Christ that it desires. The demon is starved, malnourished, desperate for sustenance but it is denied. The food on the table is a dead dove on top of palm leaves and a plate of loaves and fish. A symbol of Christ’s sacrifice and a symbol of charity (which the angel is ironically refusing) respectively.
Wash Me in Your Blood, 2025
Suffering is often glorified within Catholicism as a means towards salvation, a theme encompassed in the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. The blood spilt by Christ is a symbol of His forgiveness and love for humanity. I was often taught to worship the blood spilt and to pray to be covered in the blood of Christ to be washed from sin. This emphasis on pain and sacrifice to receive love and forgiveness left me in a fearful mindset that I needed to constantly suffer to receive the love of a similarly suffering God. In this piece, I visualize the transition from a state of sin to a state of grace through suffering and the sacrificial blood of Christ. Two angels spear a demon who is willingly accepting this punishment and calling for the blood of a sacrificed lamb to cleanse him.
kind of inspired by medieval christian art, specifically Saint Michael Triumphs over the Devil by Bartolomé Bermejo.
My final body of work for my painting class :) I'm graduating now so this was my final project (I'm an art minor not a major!) I'm very happy with how my art has developed and the themes I've started to revolve my art around.
The first piece is "A Dog Doesn't Know Better," the second is "Wash Me in Your Blood," and the third and final is "The Road is Narrow."
I’m depicting my mindset while I was actively Catholic. I had really horrible mental health at the time going through a bit of breakdown. I turned back to my faith in desperation which ended up somewhat worsening my mental health in some ways and helping in others. The idea of incomprehensible divine beings was both comforting and terrifying. Growing up Catholic, I’ve always had a fear of hell. Through all Catholic teachings, there is a thread of suffering leading to salvation or penance. The blood of Christ to forgive our sins is a forefront of Catholic worship. This glorification of suffering left me with the ideology that I am completely unworthy of God’s love and in order to be in a state of grace or to be forgiven/loved I need to go through pain. The more suffering you experience the holier you are, the more likely you will receive peace and love in heaven in return for your pain on earth. It’s holy to live a life denying yourself earthly joys and desires. I was constantly in fear of hell and of the God that required punishment and pain for love and forgiveness.
A lot of these paintings are based around things I was taught growing up and what I absorbed mentally from the faith even if it wasn't explicitly said. They're also inspired by many different eras/styles of Christian art that I've learned about personally and through my timy studying art history. I'll go more into detail about each individual painting in later posts :) sorry for the yapping
