FLEMISH FOLKLORE: THE TALE OF THE MERMAID CASSANDRA

In a distant past, in Flanders, fishermen from Damme caught a mermaid named Cassandra in the Zwin. Instead of throwing her back into the sea, they took their "trophy" with them to Damme, where she was displayed in the market for money. The mermaid struggled, cried, and begged to be released. After 3 days of humiliation and dehydration, Cassandra was fed up with the behaviour of the people of Damme, and put a curse on the city and its inhabitants:

"Damme will perish, Bruges will exist!"

Cassandra had to pay cursing the town and was thrown into an oubliette in Oostkerke, where she died of grief. Cassandra's curse did come true despite her death, for the harbour of Damme silted up, whilst the one of Bruges prospered.
