michonne + happiness
He’s more colorful this way
just in case you were unaware true love wasn’t invented until november 18th 2012 when season 3 episode 6 of the walking dead aired and in the last few minutes of the episode rick grimes walks out from the prison his survivor group has been staying in holding his newborn baby who’s mother just violently died and across the prison yard through the chain link fence sees michonne standing there like an angel holding baby formula she’d rescued, brought to them from his friends who’d been kidnapped by the rival survivor group, surrounded by zombies who aren’t biting her and who in the opening of the next episode he has to rescue…btw
I'm new to the Walking Dead franchise and am sitting here balling my eyes out thinking about Michonne and Carl's beautiful relationship and i am so happy that Carl got to experience her love, care, and nurturing during his time- albeit short time, after the world fell (IMO, Carl wouldnt have lasted as long had Michonne not been a part of his life, actually ill stand on that and say Rick wouldnt have lasted long either without her). Many people werent able or willing to give as much to others as Michonne did, especially after losing so much. We see her demonstrate care throughout the series for many people, yet she never quite receives the same level of care in return (couldnt stand Andrea for this very reason). The way she loves selflessly and nurtures without any expectation of reciprocity makes me want to know more about her upbringing and what her parents instilled in her, if she had younger siblings she had to care for (she gives off older sister vibes), a close knit family, etc. She's an extraordinary example of the many facets of selfless love, very similar to Rick (so i was surprised to learn that some people felt they werent a good match, since they're pretty much the same person!). Do you have any headcanons or insight about her upbringing and early family life that may have contributed to how she demonstrates love? Thanks in advance!
I love the way you worded this.🥹 And I really agree! It makes me happy that you, too, were moved by the bond between Michonne and Carl. Their connection is one of the things that really endeared me to this show. And this is a great, thoughtful question about the way Michonne’s upbringing might’ve influenced how she loves. Being a big sister myself, I could totally see Michonne being one too. Especially because there’s often an expectation for the eldest daughter to be responsible and have their stuff together.
My instant thought is that Michonne came from a family with a lot of accomplished, well-rounded women who didn’t make themselves small. I could see it being that her mom was a powerhouse woman, and Michonne got to grow up seeing her father love and support her mom for all she is, rather than try to shrink her down. It would let her know you can be all of you and still find a love that encourages that, rather than minimizes or shrinks that. I feel like maybe she watched the selfless way her mom and dad supported each other and supported her, and that impacted the selfless way she loves others.
I also was thinking about it, and I could see Michonne maybe even having a little brother that was several years younger than her - like he was a tween while she was in college/young adult or something. Because right off the bat, she was so good with Carl, particularly navigating him at that tween age, and of course, being a mother to Andre contributed to that. But with Andre being a toddler and Michonne still knowing how to connect with Carl as an older kid, I could also see it being that she maybe had experience with a younger brother too, and remembers how he was when he was Carl’s age. I like to think Michonne came from a genuinely nurturing family that instilled values of loyalty, honest communication, and loving fiercely. And I completely agree that one of the many things Michonne and Rick have in common is being great examples of selfless love.

TOWL Episode 4 - What We
The full scene in its entirety so fiends like me can circle back and re-watch any and every time we want!❤️🔥
richonne friends…
imagine baby!michonne always checking the keychains in gas stations and gift shops to see if her name was on a keychain.
the disappointment of scrolling through the racks until she gets to "Michelle' and there's never a 'Michonne’ afterwards.
every single time.
in TOWL she walked past it without even trying to look because she spent her childhood always disappointed.
imagine how many years of childhood it took for her to give up and just stop looking for her name. instead buying herself an M necklace that she’s worn since the start of the turn.
she’s had this necklace since the beginning. she was wearing this when she met rick across the prison fence. rick’s seen this on her since their first meeting.
my baby even put rick's ring on that necklace so she can have a representation of herself and her man.
which i hate that the show-runners did his old wedding band but it's a rant for another day. also twd showrunners doing this is probably the reason she’s not wearing it in TOWL. why would she wear something that represents her husbands marital vows with his EX WIFE?
and that's why rick giving michonne the M necklace from the gift shop is so special. it's something he's seen her wear since the prison. hearing the disappointment in her voice when she said she's "never liked those" and she's never seen her name "not even once".
rick notices everything about michonne. he saw she wasn't wearing it during their reunion. he saw that flicker of adolescent sadness on her face remembering how she never was able to have one of those keychains because her name was never there.
rick working with what he’s got to make her happy shows what kind of husband he is. it’s always for her. he will always find a way to fix the hurt she’s gone through.

Thank you Danai for this gift, and for putting your heart, soul, and brilliant mind into this episode. I still remember exactly how it felt to hear this dialogue and watch this scene for the first time.
Thank God I’m a Richonner!

he's so
I still laugh thinking about Michonne throwing herself and Rick out of a moving helicopter in the middle of a storm because she needed to knock some sense into him💀 character of all time truly.
they're really going to villainise an innocent man. a man who was an icu nurse, who worked for the veterans, who wanted to defend an innocent woman. they threw alex pretti to the dirt, beat him, and then shot him multiple times defenceless on the cold ground.
there will be no accountability, they'll say he deserved it like renee good did. ICE executed a man and a woman in cold blood and they'll say its for 'the greater good'
