Frank Turner And The Sleeping Souls Bristol Colston Hall, Night 2: 22/11/15

Wessex Boy Frank Turner took over Bristol Colston Hall over the weekend of the 21st/22nd of November accompanied by the sleeping souls in support of his latest release “positive songs for negative people”. And boy, this man never fails to disappoint. From the very beginning you could tell that Frank had the audience in the palm of his hand, as he would lead everyone in sing-alongs, dances and even star jumps. The 28 song set included songs of 7 of his albums including “Try This At Home” and “Out Of Breath” as well as solo performances of “The Ballad Of Me And My Friends”, “the way I tend to be” and “worst things happen at sea”. You can see quite clearly how much doing this means to the often outspoken artist and how much he cares about the audience as he comes down offstage and throws himself into the front row as well as a very impressive crowd surf during “I Want To Dance”. During a week of tragedy in Paris where bands canceled their respective tours the confident artist confidently ensured that nothing was going to stop his shows and from doing his duty’s. Every time I go to see Frank Turner and the sleeping souls I am never disappointed the musicianship in each individual is clearly displayed as well as the chemistry on stage. There are no other words I can put together other than Frank Turner will deliver 10 times out of 10 you will walk away from his shows absolutely speechless and with a huge smile on your face.

Download Predictions: Part 2

So, there has been a lot of news regarding Download Festival this past week starting with the addition 6 bands! Quick thoughts then, Korn and Deftones are a very good additions and Megadeth ticks a box with me. Not as big on Disturbed but its an understandable selection to be honest. I don’t care that much for Motorhead and Nightwish so lets move on!  

 On top of that it was announced that there is going to be a Download Paris this year! And the line up so far is pretty similar to this years UK line up but with additions that include Biffy Clyro, Ghost, Gojira and Volbeat. So you would think that each band on the Paris line up is in with a strong shout for playing Download UK. There are 2 bands that stick out to me in particular. They go by the name of Trivium after this years “Silence in the snow” you know it makes sense! And also Anthrax stick out to me purely on the basis that they feel like “a festival band” so their addition would not surprise me. As far as adding bands to the bill I still stand by most of what I said in part 1 so go check that out if you have not already! But I would love Biffy Clyro to appear at this years download possibly as a 2nd stage headliner.

 Now I would like to go into stage splitters, where would I put each band on the bill. Now the ones already announced are no doubt bands that will play on either the main stage if not second and I don’t want to draw up a line up just yet but I would say that seeing Deftones be main support for Iron Maiden at Sonisphere in 2014 I would tip them to do the same for Black Sabbath at Download next year. I feel Korn could either headline the 2nd stage or support Rammstein I would tip them to play the main stage more though. It would surprise me if Nightwish didn’t support iron maiden and I believe Disturbed will headline the 2nd stage and as for Megadeth and Motorhead I see them on the main stage playing in the late afternoon slots.

 That’s al I have to say right now, not a terrible line up so far but I can see why people have their frustrations. You cant help but feel as if this is a line up made of bands on this metaphorical carousel of bands who play either Download or Sonisphere every few years, I’m just hoping the next announcement will give us a better idea of who is going where in terms of stage splits!  But I still hold my predictions from the first part! Now we wait again for the next announcement got a feeling these names will be fairly renown but it will be the ones that follow that should include all our favorite gems.

Evil Scarecrow, Southampton Firehouse: 7/11/15

With their “Blue Peter” approach to the metal genre Evil Scarecrow rocked up to the 75 capacity bar to play their first ever sold out show.

 With support from “Decapod” who played a more melodic metal style stretching to hard rock warmed the crowed up nicely followed by “Saqqara” A thrash band played songs packed full of riffs similar to the like of Metallica and Machine Head. I felt they got the job done and had everybody warmed up for the night’s headliner.

 This being the 3rd time I have seen this band it seems as though this band is rolling along at their own consistent pace. Unfortunately to me it feels as if this band falls victim to circumstance far to often this time being down a guitar player and keyboard player due to personnel reasons. However that it doesn’t hide the fact that I can’t take this band seriously as much as I appreciate the humor in their music.

 Crabs and Robots, that is cool with me but when I am forced to watch to people eating cake on stage and am watching a conga line is just something that I wouldn’t want to see at a rock concert. And there is only so long you can stand there and listen to someone talk in between songs before the buzz dies and I begin to get board. Granted reasons behind this were down to technical issues including sample pads and guitar wireless kits cutting out as well.  

 All in all I found this show enjoyable with heavy tunes like “Rise”, “Space Dementia” and “Dance Of the Cyclops”. And of course your not going to miss out on there popular tracks in “Robototron” and “Crabulon”.

 But this band sometimes takes it to a level where I struggle to take them seriously at all that said there is appeal and entertainment value if your into that sort of thing.

Preliminary Download Predictions!

So I guess it is that time again where we can all get ourselves exited for undoubtedly England’s most popular metal and rock festival download! A little under 2 weeks ago we learned that Rammstein Will be gracing Donington main stage on Friday, Black Sabbath on the Saturday and Iron Maiden on Sunday! Now before I continue I would just like to point out that I had my money on Rammstein back in August! They are a band I love so cant wait to see them. Black Sabbath will go see purely because they are calling it a day… again. And Iron Maiden Absolutely no complaints seen them before and will happily see them again!

 Now with the Headliners only being announced this week prediction are still fairly minimal but when I look at particular bands and the year they have had These are bands I wouldn’t mind sticking money on making an appearance over the course of the festival. Firstly ill get my bias predictions out of the way. Its another German band in ‘We Butter The Bread With Butter” The band has yet to make it back to the UK since late 2013 and have been touring the rest of Europe in support of their latest album “Wider Geil” I think that they would be a great addition to one of the tents. The next band I would like to see is another German band in Caliban who last made a download appearance in 2005. Its been over a year since their last visit to the UK and with a new album set to drop some time in 2016 I cant think of a convenient time for the these guys to come and play download again and do full blow UK tour!

 Now, predictions that may make a little more sense. First one a marmite band in Asking Alexandria. With the album of re recorded songs coming soon I can see them playing the 2nd stage over the course of the weekend. Sticking with 2nd stage predictions to bands I would tip to headline the 2nd stage would be Papa Roach and Bullet for My Valentine. Papa Roach are not set to return to the UK until November with Five Finger Death punch and are not penciled in for any tour dates from now until then.  On more bands that I can see playing is Coheed And Cambria after their newest release was really well received.

 That’s as far as I dare run my mouth right now but with another announcement coming very soon we can start to make a little more sense of Download 2016 and see if we can add more bands to the line up and more importantly see if I am right!

Getting Started (Finally)

So I have had this set up for a while, I had made a couple weak efforts to get something posted but I was finding topics to write about and with Uni on the horizon people are like “You need to set up a Tumblr man!” So with that said this also sort of comes from the whole “starting Uni” topic. On the Facebook pages i see a lot of people asking what bands people are into etc. So i thought that would be a great starting point for me to tell you a little bit about what I'm into when it comes to music. So here we go!

Just for future reference, though on paper I do see this page being purely based on discussing music. However me being really opinionated and have other interests else where it would not surprise me if I did write about other topics especially if it encourages me to use this thing! 

First of all ill tell you were I started. I’ve never made any bones about the fact that my favorite band is and always will be Green Day (if you must know my favorite record is nimrod!). That was the “scene” I grew into Blink 182, Sum 41, Yellowcard you name them! Obviously with most of the songs exiting and relatively easy to play for a few years i was the front man of my own pop punk band. I started to learn my craft as a musician by writing my own material as well as covering songs by the likes of operation ivy, The Ramones and The Misfits The first shows I went to when i was younger were mainly pop punk and rock bands concerts which i still love if the band is of my liking! It is because of this that i have grown into a huge All Time Low fan and other pop punk bands of today Red City Radio, Gnarwolves etc. I guess you can say my only regret is not being old enough to go to the Pop Disaster Tour back in 2002 (although to be fair that is still a year or so before i properly started listening to music and taking it all in.)

Now considering i play in a metal band it would make complete sense to you and would come with no surprise that i spend quite a lot of time listening to a lot of Metalcore bands (No Way!) My favorite band from said genre would be British band The Defiled. I am a big fan when any band incorporates synths and electronics into their music. Other bands that a like quite a bit that do this include German band “We Butter The Bread With Butter” and Motionless In White. But yeah you can name a long list of modern day Metal acts and the chances are that i listen to them or have at least checked them out! I may post about individual bands in the future! 

But with me I do find bands that follow themes quite easy to like and enjoy as I feel I can use that to improve my stage presence and character whilst on stage playing. Not necessarily to the extent of Rammstein Or Evil Scarecrow, even Motionless In White, which i have already touched on.  But I like to use “Ice Nine Kills” as an example a band who tends to follow a dark theme both in their music and in their general representation. As the Cliché saying goes “Sometimes simple is better” and it prevents any chances of it going “Over the top”

That’s all I really have to say I know I haven't covered everything but that should give you a rough idea! Music is a key tool in my life, which helps me get through life, through bad patches as well as the little things like it has to many others as well!
