magic
my professor stopped mid-lecture to appreciate my “Expecto Patronum” pullover. i think i’ve just earned myself a chance at an A
reboot
my commutes have been ridiculously long due to traffic, and i wanted to be able to maximize my...well really i’m not sure what. i just felt like a zombie every morning and commutes gave me an excuse to feel sorry for myself and i was like
pause.
because the realization came that i was becoming a machine, and if there is one thing i NEVER wanted for my life, it was living on schedule. so the best thing happened yesterday when the car almost broke down and my mum and i had to drive it without applying brakes down the highway to the car shop at the edge of our seats fearing that it might quit on us at any moment. we watched a Korean soap while we waited, shopped at the local H mart, grabbed some bubble tea to-go, and got Chinese take-out. so when we finally got home 4 hours post-original ETA, i felt alive again.
and then i founds some podcasts to listen to every AM. but more on that soon. sometimes though, u just need a reboot and i’m learning that comes from the unexpected.
Today.
detox
i’ve decided [as i have many times in the past already] that i am in need of a social media detox. really, i currently don’t have enough hours to spare in the day and i don’t want my precious time spent clicking through others’ pastimes. or dealing with the comparisons, self-pity, and FOMO that inevitably results. additionally, i’ve realized that social media sucks my creativity and i feel like the energy i put into scrolling excessively can result in something fantastic if i invest it elsewhere. i will, however, still be writing and posting here. but for now, i’m checking out elsewhere. i’ll be back when i have something to show for my radical decision.
in the morning
i’ve been trying this new thing where i smile up at the ceiling. before i reach for the snooze button, before i check my phone, before i attempt to tell time based on the daylight seeping through my window blinds. i just smile stupidly at the ceiling and stretch against my pillows. in that moment, my mind is blissfully empty and my heart feels ridiculously full. i feel as though i could fly in the wind and conquer the world day after tomorrow. and somehow that moment is why i now willingly escape my dreams.
sunday.
i’m here early on a Sunday morning bc i woke up with the severe need to find a pencil pouch that is functional but not ridiculously priced
i’ve already sifted through hundreds of online shopping pages
i really have no idea what the hell is wrong with me
soulmates
is there really such a thing as soulmates? or are some loves just so eternal that they traverse through lifetimes, waiting to be rekindled? @woolgatherandmull
timeline: exhausted
for a while now, i’ve had the privilege of time on my side. apart from work and managing financial independence as best i can, it has been therapeutic to have novel ideas + the time to execute them. three days of school and i already feel as though there’s barely time to breathe...let alone live. times like these, i wonder: what am i working towards? where am i headed, and is it worth it to give up muddled years of stress and anxiety for a future that will always be foggy?
because here is the harsh truth: nothing is safe or predictable, no matter how hard you work or how far you plan. there is no one path to being and well and settled because attaining that state is a journey of the mind, not an actual destination. if you can be conscious and healthy today, and the same tomorrow, you are capable of satisfaction and fulfillment double over because you’ve wasted no time feeling good in between. if you stress today about working out a happy tomorrow, you will never be free...no matter how far you go.
and so i wonder, have i escaped the cycle yet? or am i still a pawn to my own exhaustive plans for a tomorrow that may never come.
Where are my friends, when I need them?
Considering everything that has been happening in the political sphere these last two weeks, I am seeking permission right now to take up space and write about how it feels to be on the receiving end of condemning or exclusionary rhetoric. Is this okay?
Do you know what it feels like to be considered a stranger in your own country as a child? First days of school were always the worst growing up. New teachers would take one look at my culturally ambiguous name combination on the roster and would look at my hair, my eyes, my skin...anything that would give them a clue on where I was “really from.” It may be a social tendency, but it was still quite an unsettling experience for a child. “I’m sorry, how do you say your name?” they’d ask, just to be sure. Sometimes, substitutes especially, would follow it up with the expected sickeningly syrupy voice: “where is your family from?” or my personal favorite, “when did you move to this country”? All eyes would be on me as I sank lower into my seat, willing the world to open up and swallow me whole.
Although the attention used to make me feel really embarrassed, I had amazing classmates who always came to my rescue. I grew up in the same school district from second grade to graduation, so these guys knew me and knew I didn’t deserve such scrutiny. They’d pronounce my name for me if I didn’t want to repeat myself, as though it was obvious so as to make whoever posed the question squirm and move on. They had my back because I was their pal and they never doubted I was one of them. I had the power to define my identity and introduce myself however I wished and my peers accepted it without question. It was compassion and trust that made it so easy. They took me as I am and I returned the favor because it meant that we could all feel loved and happy in the classroom or on the playground. We are diverse country, unless we’re of Native descent, somewhere someone in our family had to have been an immigrant for us to be here. We have unique narratives and backgrounds, that’s how it works, duh. If only the adults of our society could be as open-minded and understanding as children.
Nowadays I hear a certain nominee for President say horrible things about different aspects of my identity. I feel disrespected today even when it is not directly about me because I know that it could most definitely be about my gender, my ethnicity, my race, my sexuality, my parents, and my children tomorrow. When he is not condemning me, he is excluding me from his policies and his vision for a “greater” America. Despite my citizenship, I’m not a “real” American in his eyes and so I’m not a priority. His followers now feel authorized to openly unsettle people like me on the street, remind us that we don’t belong here. It’s not about being “politically correct”, it is about the respect I deserve as a fellow citizen. Respect and courtesy that I shouldn’t have to demand, but should be inherent in humanity.
And I’ve never longed so much for my childhood peers, so they could help me make him squirm and go away. Maybe it was easier when we were kids because we were better at sympathizing with someone else’s tears; we knew that if someone gets hurt, we stick up for them and make them feel better. We call out the bully and make him pay for the audacity to question an innocent citizen simply because of his/her unique narrative. Instead, this man is convincing people that I am to be feared and alienated. And I wonder if they ever played with someone like me at recess as children, because then perhaps they’d know me well enough to know I am none of his lies.
The only reason you would 1) choose to vote for this man or 2) could choose to refrain from voting is precisely because you are currently not being bullied and/or have the privilege of being a silent bystander. And you are not using your voice and power to help me. Because if you look away, it will likely not impact you or your loved ones directly. You are safe from being targeted...no matter how it goes down in November.
And I might give up anything for just a taste of that privilege, even for just a few hours so I can get a good night’s sleep. But that luxury never has, and never will be afforded to me. The difference is, I used to have people who looked like him back me up. People who used their privilege to fight alongside me. Where are they now, when I need them most?
P.S. I am American, but just a brown one. Because apparently that matters.
Take A Seat
i only have a few words
for those who claim All Lives Matter
you would have been right
had we lived in an another world
a righteous world
just and fair…not in color
but in principle
that fantasy does not exist
not currently, not yet
if All Lives Matter then
help us fight
for those who’ve died
if you could care less
because the dead don’t look
quite like you
then please
don’t speak
don’t take up space
just sit down.

Itching to Pen
At times I have this incessant need to write and it is the weirdest sensation, mostly because it has not always been instinctive for me to sit down and pen words. I don’t deny that I am a writer at heart, but I have never had a defined outlet before. Journaling wasn’t encouraged throughout my childhood because my grandmother was afraid the habit would result in a sanctuary for secrets. I suppose my family hoped that closing any channel for introspection would result in a better opportunity for them to know everything about me.
But I wasn’t wired for that sort of creative manipulation: their plan backfired.
A void began to form deep within me, a space into which my deepest thoughts and desires were swept away when I could share them with no one relevant…including myself. For the longest time, I thought I was someone I was not…I realized my heart never ached for the ambitions and aspirations I had set for myself. And I became this place from where there was no return address: I could not write to myself, I could not write for myself, I refused to listen to the voices of the various versions of me screaming to be let out of the confines of my mind, my heart, my soul.
Sometimes, I am still there…to a point where I am hoarse from not being heard. But I am learning to recognize the signs for help. I know now that when I am looking out but don’t see the world around me, it is because I am lost elsewhere. And the disorientation has a side-effect: the sensation of a phantom limb beckoning for use. I have learned to recognize it only because the veins in my forearm begin to tingle, a sensation that lasts for days if I attempt to ignore it. As though I have magic coursing through my veins. And when I can finally put it off no longer and am forced to give in, I never know what to expect. I swear to you, I can never predict what’s coming.
All I know is that words tumble on to paper and rearrange into a coherent language that both enlivens and unnerves me. I walk away immediately, baffled, only to return a few days later to relive the words of someone with whom I haven’t been fully acquainted. So I wonder what would happen when we finally meet, when I come to terms with this experience…
I suppose this is a superpower, one I am just now discovering. Will I ever harness the power, will I hone my abilities, and if so…where will we go together?
Humanity
It has been an especially horrid week for mankind and quite honestly, I’m having trouble breathing. Hundreds of innocent people dying in a slew of attacks across the world. Orlando, Dhaka, Paris, Istanbul, Yemen, Jordan, Lebanon…some receiving more media attention than others but all equally brutal and with utter disregard for human life. And I have thought and thought about this endlessly, about the motives, the aggressors, the intentions, and the message being conveyed.
At first, it only felt senseless and everything worth considering seemed hopeless. There is nothing that the victims had in common…apart from having their last taste be that of malice, inhumanity, and brutality. And for a world plagued by xenophobia and the inability to accept difference in narratives, it seems bleak to know that the attackers have achieved such broad diversity among those they’ve massacred. Anyone anywhere could be next, no matter their age, gender, race, class, ethnicity, or faith (a fact that we always fail to accept, no matter how many continue to get hurt). I stumbled upon the irony that, more than Mother Nature or Fate or God, humans had more to fear from each other. The pregnant Italian eating at a foreign cafe, the travelers in Turkey waiting for a connecting flight, the young hyphenated American catching up with college friends abroad, the Muslim family out shopping to prep for Eid…they were scattered across the face of the Earth on their last day. Their shared quality was their humanity. They were alike in that they were innocent. They suffered only because they all had a right to live out many more years than were afforded to them.
And for this reason, I feel bitter, hopeless, and dejected. But it occurred to me…and this may be far-fetched and simply my unrelenting need to cope with all that is going on. But I realized that all of this is going on simply because human life is precious. That when someone wants to showcase their power and brutality, they do so by threatening what we treasure the most. And the human ability to breathe, love, flourish, and prosper is so very precious. We are attacked not because we are of a certain nationality, faith, or culture…but simply because we fear the possibility that life can be taken away so carelessly by armed strangers. But with fear, we tend to know more harm than good…accusing other innocent members of our global community for the monstrosities and sins committed by a few extremists. So now, we have a choice. To fear each new day and person we meet…or to love and live freely and boldly to the end of our days. To combat being made a pawn in others’ mal-intentions, we must revel in the very humanity and compassion that comes naturally to us. This is how I’ve decided to live…how about you?

What Mr. Williams had was a platform, and damn did he use it. He walked on to that stage and made the conscious decision to not speak about himself, focusing instead to shed light on the very real consequences of oppressive institutions that remain “invisible” in mainstream conversations. So many people of color are invited on to stage nowadays, which is brilliant considering the so few opportunities afforded to them. But they spend most of the time thanking the Association, the director, the crew….spend so much time being grateful for just being invited, for being in the room.
And every time, I’m pulling out my hair screaming WHY. Why should it be a privilege to be in the same room in the first place!? LET’S TALK ABOUT THE AGENTS WHO MAKE THE DECISIONS ON WHO GETS TO WALK IN THE ROOM, WHO GETS RECOGNIZED.
There are patterns here, patterns that are invisible to those who are favored by them and obvious to those who are impacted. And Jesse Williams walked on to that stage and shone a focus light on members of society who are ignored, near voiceless, under-recognized, and trampled by the workings of our democracy time and time again. Thank you for owning that stage and laying the foundation for so many more who will walk it after you and continue to make waves. Godspeed, good sir.
hullo again
it has been a while…and i realize i say this more to myself than anyone else. originally, i started this page to share some thoughts that were presumably “too serious and controversial” for conversations over tea. why…i have no idea. but then again, when you are still trying to adjust to post-college life i suppose you tend to forget that not everyone chooses to recognize the oppressive institutions which plague and direct the daily happenings of most life on Earth. or some are truly unaware. both the conscious choice to disregard and blissful ignorance can simply be explained by one word: privilege. a word that cannot be afforded to me in many scenarios of life. *sips tea*
but i digress.
point is, i’m back. and i realize that i’ve missed this, i need the outlet, i want the chance to hurl my words on to a page and not have to apologize. for i have nothing to apologize for, though i end up doing so in more conversations than i can count because fragility is a guilt-tripping, unapologetic bastard.
again i digress.
so i have thoughts, and some will be explosive though most will be mellow, but all will be passionate. that is a promise.
in conclusion, hullo. let’s jam.
