There’s a lot to say about NATLA but I just want to comment on the genocide scene since I haven’t seen anyone else say this:

The point of making it a sweeping battle where Air Nomads and Fire Nation were more closely matched was a shame, and made it feel more like established war than blatant genocide. It is obviously still genocide if a whole group of people defend themselves and die trying, but it felt like the director wanted to make it epic, grand, and powerful. Very Star Wars.

It’s much more heartwrenching to simply observe the aftermath. In the cartoon, Aang returns to the air temple after 100 years and says here’s where I ate, here’s where we played… here is our architecture, this is where animals and friends of mine made their home. We understand through Aang’s stories that these were not warring people. Some nomads could probably do a bit of combat, but that was not their way of life. It wasn’t a battle at all for Fire to erase this entire culture.

The original story is quick and impactful: two qualities the remake sorely lacks. All I saw in NATLA’s genocide scene was wasted time and a blatant lack of understanding for Air culture. I think the writers wanted the nomads to be able to hold their own against a threat, but it’s just not the reality. They were true pacifists and the Fire Nation’s genocide of them perfectly illustrates the extent of Sozin’s cruelty without the need for boring exposition or lengthy fights.

writing conclusions in papers is like the stupidest thing ever though like what’s the point of dedicating an entire paragraph to “so yeah i know you just read my paper but this is a summarization of what you read in case you need to be reminded about what you just read” like why can’t the paper just end

so many good points on this post and I so desperately want to add that if you do find yourself summarizing at the end of your paper, that’s okay, you can still use that conclusion - as your NEW INTRO

I sometimes found that I didn’t actually know exactly what I was trying to say until I got to the end of my paper. So then when I finished the paper and summarized the whole thing up after writing it, I found that my conclusion made for a much better intro than the original intro I wrote

So I’d take my conclusion, make it my intro paragraph, reread the whole thing, and then write a new conclusion with new information (new information you’ll probably have come to at that point, because you just reread your own essay and thought about everything you said from a clearer point of view)

it makes you feel smart and cool when you do this, guaranteed
