*The above pictures were taken in January/ February, but nothing has changed except my hair is maybe 3 inches longer.
I’ve gotten quite a few questions about my hair, especially with me being a black woman with kinky curls who spends most of my time around society’s elite. So, here’s to answer some of your questions:
1. I wear my hair straight 70 percent of the time. Not because I believe in society’s notion that my curls aren’t beautiful or “properly groomed”, but because straight hair is easier for me to maintain. And I love seeing length. My hair is usually styled as pictured above.
2. I feel beautiful with straight or curly hair, however, each gives me a different type of look, energy/ vibe, and boost of confidence. So, different settings and types of first impressions I plan to make do result in how I’ll wear my hair. I do tend to wear my hair more curly when vacationing or casual because I prefer it to be over the top and big like Diana Ross. And I haven’t learned how to tame the frizz when styling it that way.
3. If a guy or older gentleman tells me he doesn’t like me to wear my hair curly, F.U.C.K. him. Hasn’t happened yet, but I’m sure the time will come, and I’d gladly tell him everything I dislike about him.
4. Don’t be ashamed of your hair. And you don’t have to flatiron to make others feel comfortable. I will happily curse the fuck out of anyone who has anything rude to say about my curls. I flatiron often because I enjoy straight hair and how I look with it, not to conform to others’ likings.
5. My hair is dyed like 3 different colors, lol. I prefer my whole head to be light/ golden brown with blonde highlights, but won’t do it because of risk with breakage and damage. So just the top portion is that color. The bottom was dyed a soft dark brown so all the colors flowed together nicely, but I’m letting that grow out. My hair is long enough now where you can’t exactly see the natural dark color of my bottom half because the hop half comes down to a good length.
6. People ALWAYS stare at my hair when it’s curly (especially recently while in Vegas). It use to bother me and make me feel unattractive because we are taught at an early age to be ashamed of our kinks. Plus, I never know why people are staring. Now, I embrace the attention. I feel like a nubian intimidating goddess who stands out from the crowd, lol. And curly hair captured the attention of a lot of patrons one night at a Ritz Carlton.
Hope that answered all your questions. For my brown girls, I would love to discuss almost anything from products, techniques, how to stretch the hair and have less shrinkage, different styles (buns, twist outs, braids outs, curling wand, flexi rods, wash & gos, flat twists, curl formers, ect. ), hair care, ect. I LOVE talking about our hair. I’m type 4, btw and don’t have “mixed girl” hair.
